Door Speaker Question

I have a couple questions. First would be: I have an 86 Ford Crown Vic that i just installed some 5 1/4 coaxials in the front kick panels, and i was wondering if i added a baffle or some type of backstop if it would increase the volume a little bit. I dare not list the speakers in question because of the shittyness. They are just mounted in the factory location under the door panel cover. Second question would be if i ran 2 sets of four ohm speakers to my two channel amp what ohm load would the amplifier see. Amp is a RF punch 450.2 powering 2 sets of coaxials. I ran the left channels both positives to the amps positive speaker output and the same with the negative. If this needs clarifying then please let me know. Thank you very much.

Edit: Wrong forum sorry. Mods if you will please move to speakers/subwoofers.

need help with deccision

I need to find the right amplifier for the job and there are a few selections I'm not familiar with. I am planning on useing 2 Diamond audio D1 10' 200rms in a sealed downfiring box to go under the seat of an '02 GMC Sierra extended cab. My choices so far are

RE XT 800.2----not to familiar with these amps

Diamond Audio D400.1----these either, but I have heard them on the same set up in the same truck sounded great,(also most expensive of the amps)

Hifonics BXi1201----had this one before, it was awesome, but it was for SPL, I want to lean a little more towards, SQ this time.

Any other suggestions would be helpful, I am trying to stay around $300, and I need at least 400 watts at 2 ohms. I'm am also trying to stay away from mainstream brands but am finding it difficult to judge these non-CEA2006 rated amps.

Thank you

Dcon review

Posted up on DIYma:

After a few weeks, there's not much I can say other than this is the best sub I've ever owned. It's simply amazingly accurate. It's perfect for the setup I had envisioned for my car: single amp driving passives up front and sub with the rear channel. Small sub box, moderate power requirements. I bought the single 4-ohm version, which gets fed a healthy 400 watts from my Exile amp. Low-pass is around 90Hz, higher than I want, but my Alpine mids are the limiting factor right now.

These days I mostly listen to electronica, but I've had the Focal CD's downloaded for some time now. I finally got them burned to CD, and thought what the hell, it's been a while since I've listened to music recorded with real instruments.

This is almost as much a review of the Focal CD's as it is the DCON. Both are nothing shy of amazing. I'm on Disc 5 now, I believe, and I have run the gamut from shit-eating grin to laughing hysterically at how good it all sounds.

I can't pick any one song, or even a few... so many songs on that compilation are just incredible to listen to. Such wonderful recording quality, and some crazily good bass notes. I keep telling myself, "THIS is why I spend the money!!!"

But the bass... damn that is some sweet bass. I haven't owned very many subs, and up until I bought a pair of JL 10W6v2's I hadn't really ever owned what I'd consider a "quality" sub. But after having heard some good ones, I do understand the difference now. Hearing the accurate separation of tones in the bass frequencies is something that will never, ever get old for me. I literally cannot stop smiling sometimes.

Right now it's just a bit localized because of the high crossover point, but it's livable. I just can't get over how great it sounds.

The DCON is an unbelievable value, and I couldn't recommend it more, for a budget system that still demands quality sound. The only thing I need to do is move it to face rearward, but I need to get a wedge or something to put under the box since it doesn't have an angled back.

My final verdict: I need to grow an extra hand to give it three thumbs up!

Upgrade to Mach 5 IXL-10's. Some questions

Hey guys, pretty new to this forum. I currently run a boston acoustic G512-44 off of a rockford p1000-1bd amp. It is in a sealed box and sound really good. I gets pretty loud, ok for my ears anyways, 120-130. But anyways, I was thinking about getting two Mach 5 IXL-10 BR woofers. My goal of this upgrade is to have the same great sound just add a little more oomph once in a while. I do not usually crank it all the time, but when I'm in the mood, I would like a more output.

I listen to Rock/Rap almost all of the time, with some classic rock and R&B sometimes. Not sure whether I would go ported or sealed. (ported with the BR series of course) Has anyone used the IXL-10's here? or have any input?

Thanks

Note: I am about to do big 3 upgrade. Budget would be around price of two IXL's. And right now they are on sale $109 apiece.

New front stage

I am looking into replacing my front stage right now and was wanting some advise on which way to go. My budget is $500 for just the speakers in a 2-way setup. I drive a 4 door 99 Grand Am and have no speakers in the rear. My current front stage consists of the Focal 165KF running passive. The Focals sound good in the higher ranges but lacks greatly in the lower ranges. I am not looking at getting louder just more low end and detailed. I cross my sub around the 50-60hz range and would like to bring my front stage close to that range also. I am looking to better the staging in my car. Currently I have these in the kicks with the speakers aimed inbetween the two front seats at the height of the headrests and the tweets aimed towards each other and slightly upwards. Now I have been thinking about putting the new speakers in door pods and putting the tweets in the A pillars. I am going to be running the new setup active off the SAX 100.4. I was wondering what speakers to go with and if the placement sounds good or if I should look into placing them in a different location. Any and all advise is welcome as I do not know a lot about front stage. I have been able to tell that it is the most important part of my setup since my sub is on only sometimes and when it is on, it is turned down all the way on my HU. If any other information is needed please let me know.

Line Driver???

I hate to bring up a topic that I know has been discussed before, but I have some details about my particular scenario that may help you all help me on deciding what to do.

The equipment I have that is in question is as follows:

-Kenwood DNX-5120 Nav Unit
-Sundown 50.4
-Image Dynamics CTX65CS Components (4 ohm)
-Mach 5 MLI 6.5" (4 ohm)

First off, I have a handheld oscilloscope which I have used to set my gains using a 1kHz 0dB test tone as follows:

-EQ flattened and loudness off on head unit
-Kenwood DNX-5120 volume can be set to 35/35 without any noticeable clipping, however I set my listening limit to 34/35; at this volume roughly 2.3 VAC is coming from the RCA's, however moving the volume down a tick or two and it quickly dives below 2 VAC
-With volume set to 34/35 and 1kHz 0dB test tone playing I adjust the gains on the amp until I see clipping then back it off a little; ended up being around 18 VAC for each of the four channels

Now my problem is with my gains set as they should be with NO clipping according to my oscilloscope I am getting some engine whine through my speakers. And as I have experienced in the past, the quickest way to get rid of this whine is to turn down the gain until it is no longer audible. However, you loose volume output.

Also, I know that Nav units do NOT have the best sound quality or EQ features due to a lot of their power being used to provide numerous other features, such as navigation. With all of this being said do you think my setup is a candidate for a line driver installation?

And for those of you wondering what handheld oscilloscope I have, it is a TPI ScopePlus 440 TPI 440 1Mhz. Handheld Oscilloscope True RMS DMM,tpi440,tpi-440,tpi 440

Thanks!!!!

Fi Q12, bandpass box, question about output

ok, well i had planned tp put a Fi BTL in my Fiero, but the only practical way to put a nice large sub in a Fiero is to either use the front storage or the trunk, using a bandpass box and porting to the cab. i had an email conversation with Scott about a bandpass box for the BTL, and he said it wouldnt work too well for a daily driver situation. so i described my situation to him and he suggested the Q or the BL. I told him id be plenty happy with the Q. he gave me specs for a nice bandpass box for the Q, and said it would have a nice flat response for frequencies between 20 and 80 hertz. this is a quote from the email, "It will take some work to get things to fit correctly, but if you had .8 cuft sealed on the rear and .5 cuft up front (all dimensions are after port or driver displacement) with a single 4" aeroport that is 23" long. This will give you a nice flat response from the low 20s in car to above 80 Hz." now here are my questions...

Will i need to add midbass speakers/woofers for 80-150hz (or whatever lol) or will the Q produce them alright in this setup?

Does anybody know what kind of output i could expect in terms of dB? I would hope to be able to out-boom my buddy's CVRs lol, especially since i kept saying how insanely loud my Fiero will be when i get the BTL (which im not getting anymore obviously lol). Im not asking which is better or anything like that, im just curious as to what dBs i can expect to make, and if it will be louder than two 12 inch CVRs getting 400ish watts a piece. ill be feeding the Q 1000 watts, or more if you think it will be able to handle it on a daily basis?

ok so last night and all day today everythings been great. setup has been beatin pretty good. ok so i went to my ol' lady's house today and had no problems what so ever on the way. my car set for 4-5 hours. i go to leave and my car wouldnt start. thought it might be a loose batt terminal checked that didnt work. my voltage meter said 12.8 turn the key and it would go to 0.0 then to 9.0 and back to 12.8. ended up using a jump box to get it started and voltage went right up to like 15.3 with the headlights on. if i turned my volume up over 1/4 up the stereo would shut off ,lights would dim ,and voltage would drop to like 9.0 ...hit the highway and i could turn it bout 1/2 way up before it did that again........
so what do ya'll think? battery or alt?

in about 2 weeks im gettin a new big batt up front and either a h/o alt or a 100amp alt from a suburban and a 2nd batt in the rear.....
I only want ONE battery for the trunk, and right now im torn between the Kinetik HC2400 and the XS Power D3100 (which im kinda leaning towards). Which of these batteries do you guys think I should run on this setup? Also, Im looking at the XS Power VCM. Will this electrical setup be sufficient? I want to be able to run this amp full tilt daily with little to no voltage drop. Thanx.

I am also lost on the port area if I make one 18 Cuft box for all 4.
Really appreciate your suggestions here.
Thanks,

SQ/SPL

I don't want to upset anyone by saying I'm looking for an SQ setup if I'm actually looking for SPL, so I'm hoping someone can steer me in the right direction. I don't like mainstream rap music, and I don't ever plan on getting my setup metered or compete, so big dB numbers arent a concern. I listen to mostly underground hip hop and a little bit of rock, like 80s metallica/slayer, so hardly any of the songs I listen to dip into the really low frequency range. I'm running 2 audiobahns in a sealed box at about 2.7cf, and because of their design, they are incredibly cramped in my enclosure (go into WinISD and look up the Audiobahn AW1251 and let it select the optimum sealed box, and you'll see what I mean). The only time my bass doesnt sound boomy or muddy is if I actually play Young Jeezy or something that only has real low notes. So basically all of the music I want to listen to sounds like shit, and everything I don't want to listen to sounds decent. So what should I be looking to build? Should I even be looking at getting a custom ported box built? And if so, should I just be looking to tune it higher? From what I've read on here people that tune their stuff low just listen to jeezy and three 6 mafia, and when people tune higher they are looking to hit big spl numbers so I think thats where I'm confused. Can someone shed some light?

Edit: Not really sure how to sum it up, but I am NOT looking for real loud deep bass at low frequencies, I am looking for good sounding bass up to about 80hz and I do not have an amp for my door/deck speakers. I dont know if that is considered an SQ setup or not, cause of the term being so subjective, but I don't see any point to me building a box/sub setup that only sounds good on music that I don't listen to. Most of my music doesn't get too low to able able to take advantage of a low tuned ported box.

Cool all is right with the world... btw he has the big 3, double 1/0 and an extra batt.
My other customer has a '94 Buick Park Ave with a 2610D from Hifonics. ALso with extra batt, big three, and 1/0 power and ground front to back. Box is 4cubes tuned to 32hz facing drivers side with the back seat cushion removed.
I was wondering if I switched to a sealed box around 13.6 cu. would be more appropriate for these woofers. I havent heard what a Q sounds like sealed before so I was just some opinions on what you guys think. The box would also have bracing inside, so after displacement it would be around 13 cu. Let me know thanks ps..... the woofers would be facing towards the back

Port Area

Alright, so im working on a design for a new box for my NS 18. i am running a saz1500d on stock alternator and soon to be (hopefully) a new xs power battery(probably d5100) im gonna do it right at 5 cubes tuned to 35hz, so it will still be good for daily, and get me a little more spl for when i compete. so since i plan on competing as much as possible i was wondering how much port area to have. ik everybody says 12-16 but i was wondering if i should go more or less or just stick within that range. ik there are some people on here that are really smart when it comes to this subject so thanx in advance. also, is 35hz a good tuning for daily and a little bit of competing or should i go higher, i dont listen to much that peaks really low normally in the 35-40hz range.

FrostedFlakeJake's Build Log

So after ordering parts and doing some small work here and there since August 09, i finally decided to start this build log. It's my first real build. Everything else prefab boxes and no electrical upgrades needed. (two set-ups off of a Crunch p1100.2. my favorite set-up was 2 12" mtx tr55 in mtx ported box). So this current build is a big, giant step for me. All the equipment is in my signature. It's my first box build and i went off of some dimensions that i received here on the forum. Should be around 32 hz (home depot doesn't do exact cuts!!). I wasn't entirely sure what to do for bracing... If i'm not pleased with the sound of this box, i'm more than open to making another one. Just wanted to try it first on my own. Right now i'm being held up by, of all things, ring terminals. I posted a thread listing the horrors that has been this project. Here's the link if anyone is interested Is This Normal? - SSA Car Audio Forum

I have all the products i need, i'm just waiting to install. Box is carpeted so i have to get new pics of that. Installing the components is the next hurdle for me, another first for me.

So on to pics!! Tried to capture everything.

2 18 BTL's??

Alright, while i sit here waiting for my order to arrive for (1) 18" BTL D2, i decide to browse craigslist.. I run into another 18" BTL D2 which looks to be in good condition.. $380.. now im really confused. lol. I haven't had the box built maybe i should just go with 2 instead of 1? The current amp i have is a sundown saz1500 .. which would be fine with 1 btl but i dont think its gonna cut it with 2 of them.. so my options IF i decide to buy this sub... buy another saz1500 and run them separately @ 1 ohm each... Strap the 2 1500's together and run them @ 2 ohms together.... I would love to sell my 1500 and buy a saz3500 but that's out of the budget right now. Doing this will put my build off at least a month as im gathering all the needed equipment, i will have to get more wire, another battery (OR 2).. what do you guys think? Keep in mind i have never heard a BTL in my life yet.. There really is no point to this thread except to read what you guys have to say to help me decide what i want to do. I have no goal except to be very very loud, no competitions or anything.. have a friend with 3 15" audiobahns which you could say i want to be louder than lol (he has a stock alt and 1 battery with a 4000watt amp LMAO).. just post whatever you guys think, vehicle is a 97 Tahoe, sure i could fit 2 18's back there.

Guys, what do you thing about Pandas ?

I have a friend in America that keeps saying Fiat Panda gets very loud and I should buy one for my project.
It has something to do with the vehicle's acoustics and the shape of the car... like Honda CRX's.
Sean and Jacob are at SBN right now, and Sean said there is a Panda ... Something like 158db - 2 x 15's

In Bulgaria I can find some Pandas for cheap... the cheapest one is 350$ ! And some better ones for about 500-700$.
What do you guys heard about Pandas? Is it true about them and SPL?
I am thinking about two Nightshades 18's or 15's if there is not enough space. Wall or no wall? If I go with a wall does the vehicle really matter that much? With a box somewhere in behind the shape of the car takes place, but with a wall everything is almost the same- wall, seats, windshield.
And the car is not the best looking one nor with a powerful engine like others... only 60hp, just does not feel right for a daily car.
My goal is daily loud vehicle for my addiction for the Lows, mainly demos(hair tricks and ppl bailing out ) and some competitions.
I don't know... just researching. Any thoughts ?

Hey guys
Sorry if this topic is in the wrong section. I just have a quick question. I am ordering a fully loaded BTL 1 Ohm for daily use with some SPL shows. I was thinking of running this bad boy off a HiFonics BXi 2610 Class D mono Block. It says it runs 1 ohm: 2600 watts x 1 chan. I have a HiFonics amp right now and I like it.....but I think its overrated as far as its RMS is, so my question is will this amp in question be OK for the BTL is it too much power for it even if it a little less than 2600 RMS? Should I consider a totally different amp? Thanks a lot guys

Subwoofer problems

My friend has a 12" Phoenix Gold Tantrum-X subwoofer. It is discontinued. he bought it from some one for $40 in a sealed box with an 800w Boss Audio amplifier. I believe the subwoofer has a problem because we hooked it up to 2 different amplifiers and it did the same thing. (The amps were properly hooked up and set correctly.)

THE PROBLEM: When you start a song the subwoofer will work like normal, but when the bass in the song becomes quiet and there's just lyrics and music the subwoofer will stop working all together. But if you tap on the cone once then the subwoofer will start working like normal again. but once the bass becomes minimal then the subwoofer will stop working, then the process repeats itself.

any help/feed-back would be greatly appreciated

Big 3 aquired, still having lights dim

ok so i done some trouble shooting to figure out why im still getting voltage drops, light dimming, and why my subs turn off when i play heavy bass songs, and this is what i came across

so today i measured for bad grounds, first i measured the battery with the car off, 12.6volts.

secound i measured from the neg side of batt to chassis ground, got 0.01 as a reading on the DMM, so that means mininum resistance which is good right?

i turned my car on, turned on the wiper blades front and rear, turned high beams and headlights on, and put my heater on MAX

i put my HU to about 26/35 and measured the battery and it never went less than 13volts

so with everything still on, i measured the power cable and ground cable AT THE AMP, same reading 13-14 volts

this is the part where im confused, so with all that being done, my lights still dim, and when the heavy bass drops when im driving and listening to music, my amp seems like it cut offs, but the green light always stays on, so really its just my subs that cut off for like 1-3 seconds

so is it a bad ground at the amp? i have 17 feet of power cable and im running 1200 watts, do i need to upgrade my power wire to 2 gauge? Should i be worried that this will ruin my amp?

heres a little background info

-1995 ford explorer
-130-140 amp alternator
-BIG 3, 4 gauge everywhere
-4 gauge amp kit from ebay
-Hifonics BXI1210D 1200 watts at 1 ohm
-2 12" pioneer subs
-kenwood mpc 205 HU, 2 volt pre-outs

thanks guys for all feed back

Two-way active front stage

Hopefully this time I can make a decision. I have a 2004 Tahoe, listen to mostly rock, rap, and blues, and want to have a two-way active front stage (finally decided to stay clear from the 3 way active front!). I want to mount in some kick panels, both the mid and the tweeter, which I will either buy from Q-logic or just attempt my own (which is what I am leaning towards). My budget for drivers is up to $500, although I don't think I will need that much. I guess they will be pretty much on-axis and for this project I am considering going more of the SPL route, beyond reference levels, with low distortion which I guess is now referred to as "SQL" (even if it doesn't make sense ). I am really after some authoritative midbass, I just don't feel the kick drums like I would like to experience them. At the same time, I am hoping to keep the tweeters a little softer, mine are quite harsh right now.

Any input would be great, just really looking for a specific set up. I haven't experimented with a lot of the DIY drivers, and really don't have a lot of cash to throw around trying all of them. So if anyone has similar tastes and loves their set up, recommendations like that would be much appreciated. Oh, and my sig shows the processing I have although the sub stage will change soon, probably tune the box a little lower and different amp. Lemme know if I forgot anything!!! Thanks

Bed box for 2 BTL 12

Hello all,

First post here, so be kind to an old-schooler...
Looking to do a bed box in my Chev 1500 step side. Max dimensions I've got are:
Width = 48
Height = 18
Depth = variable
I'd like to go with 2 BTL 12's, dual 1ohm.
Both subs will be powered by a RF T2500.

Wondering if one of you fine gentleman would point me in the right direction with:
Net Vb for common chamber enclosure... 2.65 cu.ft. per sub?
Optimum vent dimensions based on a 16.5" vent height?

Hopefully I provided enough info...
I certainly don't expect a full design, maybe just some guidance.

Thanks guys,

Fi Q (Size?) vs Type R for = output

I understand it's not exactly a fair question, but I'm just trying to gain some incite. I previously owned a 12" Type R, ran 500 rms to it in a custom made sealed box of optimum size. (got stolen)
Which setup do you guys think would put out the same amount of spl as it at 500 rms; A 12" Fi Q sealed, 12" Fi Q ported, or a 15" Fi Q sealed? I'm looking for sq so that isn't the question. The Type R was perfect for output, but quality was lacking.

SSD or Q 10's

Need some help,
I have an 09 Silverado ext cab truck, and currently I have 2 type r 10's and a PA BAMF 2000/1 amp, the box is tiny, fits under the back seat and down fires (sealed .6cuft each sub) . My buddy with the exact same truck, just put in the same box with JL 10w3's and a JL Slash 500/1 amp. His system KILLS mine!! My type r's sound terrible. I thought it was the small box but a local shop told me it was most likely the crappy amp that I have.

So, I have decided to throw my current set up in the trash and do it right this time. My question, should I go with the SSD 10's or wait for the new Q's? The amp I will use to power them will be a Sundown SAE-1200D (unless you suggest something similar in the same price range.) My price range for the subs is $500 for both, max.

Looks like the new Q's will fit my tiny box specs of .6 cuft, but looks like the SSD's barely make it as well.
I'm not looking for the best quality sound sub, but I want it to pound the $hit out of the JL 10w3's while still sounding decent.
I listen to everything but mainly hip-hop, rap, ect just for the bass.

Here is a similar box just in case you wanna give it a look, http://www.subthump.com/images/silverado/2007/cxb07-a.jpg

Q and SSD questions, for mustang

Hi all, I had a few questions while waiting on the updates in the line. I currently have an audioque 1200d for power and plan on running one sub in the trunk of my 2010 mustang. I'm having the box custom built rear firing. I listen to all music.

What would the output and sound differences be between one 10 in 1.25 ft^3 @ 32 hz and one 12 in 1.25 sealed, either ssd or q?

I was wondering if the SSD with BP option would handle 1200 watts, or would it be safer to stick with a Q?

Basically, I can go biggest on the box for ported around 2 cubic feet at 32 hz for one 12, and any size smaller. One 10 ported, or one 12 sealed, Q or SSD? For my application what do you think would work best? Price isn't too much of a concern.

Thanks and sorry for the jumble of info, hopefully you get what iIm saying.

Good 15 inch subs for sealed

Hello.

I really have a thing for sealed subwoofer setups, mainly for how well it produces all the details of drums. I understand how going sealed sacrifices output, so I was considering dual 15s sealed in the trunk of my Saturn, so as to attempt to have extra output with sealed SQ.

I have around 5 cubes space available, and a Rockford p1000-1bd (I want to run it at 2 ohms @ 500 RMS).

Any suggestions for a good pair of 15s of this criteria?

Peace.

new truck box design

I will be soon upgrading my current sub and box setup in my F250. I am limited on space and think I can go 1.5cu without much issue or maybe even up to 2.cu if I add an extension piece.
My goal here louder deeper harder hitting setup.
Here is a pic of the space I can work with and my current box.
1 10in Fosgate p2 in .53 sealed.

I can easily double the size of the current box or I can make almost like a L shaped box to utilize the lower section behind the pass side.
Without using the the lower pass side I think I could do one that is (17in H.. 33in W.... 5in D1.....8in D2) this would be outside diameter and I will be using 3/4 MDF.
This should be about perfect for one 12in Icon sealed correct?
Or should I use that other side aswell and do two 10in Icons with no separator between in roughly 2.cu sealed (total) or just do two sealed Icon 10's in .70 each side.
Does anyone see anything I dont? the back seats do not slide forward, just recline.
Looking for all around good sound and something that will hit hard and low.

Thanks
