Rl-p 15" mini review

Recommended Posts

I'm writing this mini review to try and convince anyone who who might have the same reservations that i did, not to worry. I'm not real technical so this wont be very technical either.

I was concerned about the output from a single 15". I mostly go for SQ, but on the rare occasion i put in a rap cd, i want that chit to get loud..while maintaining SQ. Ive also never owned a vented box, only sealed. So buying something based only on what people say on the net made me a little nervous.

I decided to go for it and try a d4 15" in 3.5cf net @ 28hz in my gangster ass escort hatchback

I am powering it with a PG xenon x200.4. Bridged down to 2 channels each VC gets a little over 450w.

I played with settings a little but most of my listening was done with EQ set on defeat, i used time alignment on a 8454, and xover'ed @ 63hz.

The sq on the thing is amazing. It isn't overbearing, its just clean and accurate. The sub just does what its supposed to do. I listened to everything: punk rock, bluegrass, jazz, country, electronica, and reggae and didn't feel like i needed to adjust the sub out at all. The rl-p just did what it should have and blended. It had the right amount of presence for all th music i tossed at it. Snappy response and a rich good sound. I dont think i sacrificed any SQ going vented but i guess i haven't heard the driver sealed so i cant really say for sure.

Then i decided to try out some rap to see what the output was like. Put in Mike Jones and was friggen stunned. The same sub was now flexing my windows! Long sustained low notes ftw. More than i was expecting from a single 15. This is where the driver overpowered the mids. And chit i run two sets of PG ti elites powered by another 200.4.

It maintained its SQ at all output levels. I picked up young jeezy for the drive home and was further amazed with the output this thing has. It has enough output to keep me happy and any more would just hurt.

GOOD JOB MIKE!

I ask because I have messed with a few, but have always been curious to have one for a while and see how well it works

Well those are the pro's and cons according to me. Barring another failure, i will stick with them. If another fails..ill talk some chit and find something new ;) The one that failed was from the first flood of unauthed on ebay.

Thats a pretty good review. It sounds like most of the others that I've read though. They all have good thing's to say about the RL-p's

That really makes me anxious to get mine. Just imagine how 4 of them will sound in a 10 cu box with about 5000 watts rms!

Nice review and my feelings pretty much on my Rlp. BTW, I am running mine with a PG zx475ti at 250w per coil and my mids with a PG M44. I would be running my tweets with an M50 but it went south and is too old for PG to fix it :(

I am happy with the old skool PG's and am also sentimental since I bought them new! They seem pretty durable and sound great too.

Enjoy the 15!

ATM pics are good to, just repost the better ones later. We all like to see ghetto installs, especially when they get righted later.

4 of them might damage your internal organs, and will ruin your hearing..im so jealous ;)

I got about half of my install permanently done yesterday, but didn't get the rlp hooked back up. So I'm bassless until the weekend when i can finish it up. I had to hook up a set of comps because i couldn't drive 130 miles round trip to school today in silence. I do not have a camera except on my phone and for some reason it stopped letting me send pics. I know that makes a hoser with no pics..and i will get some even if i have to use a disposable cam! Just give me a little time ;)

M5, i too love the old PG, but except for the ms1000, and 2250 they just dont put out enough power for me anymore. I wish i could afford a ms1000ta for a couple of rlp 15's but i just dont have the funds or the space for a set up like that. I also doubt my 200 amp alt could support a ms1000 and another amp for mids. I did see a m25 and m44 in mint condition at the audio store near here about a week or so ago. $199 & $289 respectively, high but i think they would drop the price some. PM me if you want the contact info for the store.
