  1. Nice job! Which network are you trying to use to get online? Wired (NIC), or WiFi?
  2. when you get it can you let us know how the iPod control goes? I used a friends JVC Arsenal (KD-ADV49 precursor maybe?). It was in Japan on a visit and i definitely didn't like the touch controls. Hopefully the new version is better, but it was tough to control and not accidentally fwd or rvrs tracks instead of turn up/down volume. iPod was only controlled via HU and SLOW... This may have been a setting on the HU that wouldn't let me DJ via the iPod directly. Ended up disconnecting the ipod to change albums, then reconnected. This was in japan, so could've been an early release of the older version. I thought it was the 33 or 44? Now they have the 49, so hopefully a lot of those issues will be resolved. I was thinking of getting that HU before using it. I definitely want fast/easy iPod control at the HU while still able to control what's playing from the iPod (passenger control). Would be nice to have it for backup cam... but warry of the touch face interface. Looked cool - actually really nice looking, but tough for me to control in a car going down the road and i wasn't even driving. GL!
  3. PC Daughter - There are a lot of ways to resolve this issue. First of all you will need an internet connection. As you are online posting in the forum - you already have that! Go to HP's site - click the support&drivers tab at the top. That *should* get you here: http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html if you type in "ze4900" - or whatever the exact model of your LT is it will bring up a list of about 40+ different variants of that laptop. Pick the one that is correct (ze4900, vs ze4910, or ze4901, or 4901ea, etc...) IF it really is just the plain 'ol 4900 - and XP not Win2k: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=500513〈=en Now - on the PC w/ internet connectivity (the one you are using now reading this) - click each of the drivers you need to download. Save them and put them on a CD or USB drive. then pop that into the laptop and execute each to install the drivers. Inside device manager (right click my computer icon, select manage, then Device Manager towards the bottom under "system tools". each device that isn't recognized/doesn't have driver will show up with a yellow ! Triangle. right click each and say install driver to manually force them to refresh. then you can point them to the folder you installed into, or have them try a automatic scan to find the driver. The hardest part is knowing which of the several drivers to use. (intel pro, vs. broadcom, vs. etc...) NIC is the internal wired connection, WIreless is typically Intel or broadcom on yours. If it has the "centrino" sticker on the palmrest try the intel pro one first. Can be a PITA - but just takes some patience. Download them all if you need to, and then go through them one at a time. Also - naming the d/l file to "Broadcom_WiFi1_sp29362.exe" instead of just d/l as sp29362.exe will help you figure out what's for what and go from ...WiFi1... to WiFi2 as you try to find the correct one. HTH and GL!

    Which shallow subs to get?

thanks guys! I talked with Nick at SI for about 30 min the other day during lunch. Super cool guy and helped me a lot to understand all sorts of stuff. I was really impressed by how he was able to break it down w/o getting too technical. He also helped me understand a lot more of the tech specs. I think that with service like that, and if the SI BM's sound like they should, it's a great company to support! I had an order that was languishing in the "not yet shipped". Canceled it and am in line for a BM or two when they come out. Gives me time to get other stuff done anyway. I'm not the fastest, but we'll get there eventually... I will definitely let you guys know what i get and hopefully get pics when it's installed. It will be a while though since it's still getting ready to paint etc.
  5. One thing that has worked for many people is take the hard drive out, seal it in a zip lock bag, and shove that sucker in the freezer for a few hours (it seems the longer you keep it in there the more time it buys you), take it out, shove it back in and see if it works. If that works than quickly get all your data off of that drive, because it's not a permanent fix and could possible fail in seconds or minutes. Agreed. Also leaving it in the ziplock w/ a bag of peas on each side can help extend it a bit further. As long as your drive isn't "clacking" where the head is slapping repeatedly, this sometimes will help you get the data off before it dies completely. Geeksquad couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag. Save your $ and post up for help on your local CL. You can get a real IT guy for less typically (especially nowadays), and actually fix the issue... I see you already got the Inspiron 530. One thing to look at is the Vostro line of desktopss and laptops - you can usually get it with Ubuntu and save a bit of $ by not buying hte OS. THen resinstall w/ your old COA key and disk. Not *technically* legal, but not pirated! You likely will have to call in during activation, but no biggie. 5 min over phone. (though if you time it right the consumer prices can be better even WITH the OS). Anyway - get a USB hard drive adapter and hook up your old drive (FYI @ 7yrs old likely IDE not SATA). You may be able to get the data off it. GL!
  6. A bit late to the game so not sure how much help this is. Most *current* software won't be able to utilize the additional cores of your 16 core dream machine. ECC vs Non-ECC - Non-ECC will *always* be faster since it does not have the additional latency (clock for clock) of error checking. Also ECC is typically horrible at OC'ing (usually no heatsink, not designed to run hot, not high end OC'able RAM chips). It still would be a cool system! I do a fair amt of video as well. Intel typically beats the pants off AMD specifically when it comes to video encoding. Look at any head to head comparison and look at the benchmarks for video. I've run both, am not a fanboy of either. Whichever CPU is the best bang for the $ is what I build around at that point in time. Same for video cards (though also sometimes depending on chipset of mobo determining what i want to run for both). My system is getting a bit long in the tooth, but will be doing a Win 7 refresh to speed it back up. For anyone who feels their system is slowing down a lot of the time just re-install windows will perk it back up. Especially if you overbuilt it to begin with. I just won Win 7 x64 Ultimate at a pre-release party on Fri. So need to backup data, wipe, and install Win 7. Maybe next week if i can get the time. My current system. It was more impressive new... Now about 2 years old (with a few more current updates (CPU, HDD, and GPU)). Intel Q9550 (Quad 2.83 w/ 12M cache). Easily running @ 3.6 w/o pushing things. Coolit Systems Boreas cooler (slightly custom) Cooling NB and CPU only (@ 15-20C at load) (worth the effort - replace the stock pump they suck) 8GB DDR2 @ 1066 (nothing special - Corsair XMS2, not really pushing these) 4GB RAM Drive for my swap (OLD from a previous RAM Drive only XP install) 4GB speedboost using USB header on mobo. (haven't seen much of an improvement, but had it kicking around) 300GB Velociraptor 10k HDD for OS (these rock!). May eventually get a second and stripe them. HD4890 Vid (may pair up in the future w/ 2nd in crossfire) Couple WD 750's for storage. Lightscribe DVD Burner and USB Slim Blu-Ray Burner external (great little drive - even works on my netbook) ASUS Rampage Formula Limited (has NB cooler vs std) - older gen 1 x48 chipset for DDR2 and 775 socket. Great Mobo - been a workhorse. and Dual 24 Viewsonics. LOVE my monitors... So - for anyone looking to increase the speed of their current system. You can of course buy new, but look at upgrading your RAM first, do a fresh backup and re-install (from scratch!) the OS. If you have Vista - try Win 7 (runs faster w/ less CPU and RAM requirements). Also don't turn your nose up at a Mac. I love my macbook pro, and little mini dell 9 w/ OSX. Macs are spendy to start, but IMHO worth a bit of a premium. though not as fun as building your own... Not to say i'd turndown a mac pro DT. Car audio noob, but don't get me talking computers...

    Which shallow subs to get?

Yeah i'm really interested in the SI BM's. That's my issue as well. I have room and *could* drop a 2cft^3 box in the back - BUT that really kills available space. I want room for the dog on trips, camping equipment, runs to home depot etc. Having it(them?) tucked into my quarters will leave me space to do that and hopefully still give me some really good bass. What are you looking at yourself? Waiting for the SI BM's? Any idea on real world ETA? thx!!

    Which shallow subs to get?

I think i'm just digging myself deeper... I've found the Critical Mass LS122 http://www.criticalmassaudio.com/subwoofers/LS122.html Also found the Re Audio LS12 http://www.mobilesoundworks.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=sl12-d4 AND the Memphis SC12 http://www.memphiscaraudio.com/products/subwoofers/sclass-subwoofers/ Feedback on these anyone? wow - so many more options than i thought... Thx!!

    Which shallow subs to get?

Thanks BigC! I love my 60(s), but one will be going bye bye soon. I've got an 84 and 87. The 84 is the one i'm building up. Has a 5sp and 33's now, trying to see if i can squeeze 35's. Regear in the near future... 33's or even 35's - Definitely not like your Bias Boggers- yikes those bad boys are LOUD going down the hwy!!! But great offroad. This is more for a DD/wknd toy not wknd toy only. Getting paint now, wrapping up damplifier pro install (slowly) etc. When it's done the 87 will go on local CL and bye bye. Don't need two unfortunately. Then maybe diesel conversion in a yr or two... It's good to dream! I checked out the E8's - not sure those would handle the 600WRMS i have available to push them. Alpine PDX1.600.

    Looking for subs for truck

I just asked for recommendations on a "good" shallow sub the other day. I got some good feedback you may find helpful. Not exactly the same goal, but there aren't many options out there. GL!
  11. i *think* pics were supposed to be there. May help.

    Which shallow subs to get?

thanks guys! I'm hoping to find some of the BM's to listen to. I don't neeed BOOM, but do occasionally like it. I'd like SQ, but honestly in this truck it's gotta be loud enough to hear over the tires on the freeway. I'm hoping the Dampener will help with that. I appreciate everyone's input. If i can find a 12" with good SQ, but able to push a bit of SPL I will be happy. No competitions and no real showing off - just to listen to on the way to work or on road trips someplace fun. Ultimately you guys have really helped me figure out what i want. I need to listen to a couple different setups, but getting close now. thank you!

    Which shallow subs to get?

Look into the soundstream stealth 13 shallow sub. i'm a soundstream dealer and it has a really good bass response being ONLY 2" DEEP Thanks for the rec. I looked at the stealth 13 - but it's a 13.5" sub like the JL - which just won't fit in the height i have available in those quarters. 12 is as big as i can go... i've got 5.5" depth to work with, not counting what is used by the box. Thx! Yes, but the cutout is that of a 12 in sub. its like 11.375" I saw that. unfortunately the space i have really is tight on a 12. I really doubt it would fit. I'll take some more measurements and check though. A lot will depend on the enclosure i have built, so trying to be a bit conservative.

    Which shallow subs to get?

Great! thanks for your feedback on those! I wonder if the pioneers are better now? the 1201's are the latest generation of them. What didn't you like? Just the install or also the sound? I'll definitely check out the Kickers!
