  3. A dmm screen often won't be able to react fast enough during musical peaks to tell you what the voltage is at that time. But some DMMs have a maximum setting, where it records the maximum voltage that went through the device (even if it wasn't displayed) and you can retrieve it later. That could be helpful. Otherwise, check for air leaks in the box. Even small pinholes can cause a rattle sound through the sub.

    Stock Market

I sold three of my long positions yesterday to book profits. Sold TEL, SYNT, and TX. It's hard to tell if the runup the last month was in part due to anticipation of good earnings results or not. Sometimes you get these runups into earnings season, and then people sell once earnings actually come out. I'm waiting for another good entry point like you, slim. Alcoa reported earnings a couple days ago and did better than expected (although their estimates had been revised downward in August, so they were just beating lower expectations). CSX railroad, Intel, and JP Morgan reported in the last 24 hours and all did better than expected also. These companies are often used as bellweathers for the rest of the earnings season because they are large companies in several different industries that report early in the time period. But if you ask me, other bellweathers reported a couple weeks ago, those being Carnival Cruise Lines and Priceline.com. Both of them also blew away estimates, which means people must be travelling more.

Got roped into giving interviews at work today. It was kinda fun, but asking the same questions 7 times got old. And felt bad for the nice girl at the end who had no experience with geoprobing, drill rigs, or most of the contaminants we ask them about. I felt like we were absolutely crushing her spirit. Then we had the dudes who seemed way overqualified and talked forever. We were lucky we had a cancellation because one guy talked nearly all the way through the next appointment's allotted time as well. I wasn't leading the interview, but I kinda hoped the lady leading it would cut him off a bit. But it was her first interviews.

    Sealed box frequency response

No. Ported just has too big of an advantage in the 30-50 hz range (if its tuned in the low 30s like most are for musical listening). A larger sealed box will have better lows than a smaller sealed box, however. Ported is white, large sealed is pink, small sealed is yellow. You can see that the larger sealed enclosure has a bit of an advantage than the small, but the ported completely trumps both until you get below 20 hz. Below 20 hz is the area where people say a sealed box can play lower. Unfortunately, 98% of music does not go that low, so it's useless in a real application.

    Welcome to the IHoP

The gf and I were headed to my grandparents' farm this weekend to help with corn harvest and so I could show her the way of farm life (she's from just outside of D.C.). We had just turned off I-70 and onto a two-lane highway when some DICKHEAD threw a bottle out of his truck window right as we were going by each other and it smashed into my gf's windshield and completely broke it. It skidded up the hood about a foot before hitting the windshield. With two things going 65 mph at each other, it doesn't take much mass to cause damage. I wasn't looking at the time, I was looking down at my phone when I heard a loud thud. I thought she hit a bird or something, then I look up and there's a 12" diameter circular break in the windshield with 40 cracks going out every direction from it all the way to the edges. I'm like WTF just happened. She was so freaked out I'm surprised she was able to keep the car on the road and come to a stop. Luckily it didn't break through the windshield, as its trajectory had it lining up nearly with my neck. But some glass pieces did fall inside onto the dash and you could move the windshield about a centimeter pushing on the circular break before I stopped testing it for fear of actually shattering it. We were able to limp it the next hour back to my hometown, as we were out in the middle of nowhere with only towns of 20-200 people anywhere close. It was definitely not legal to drive, but we didn't want to tow that far. So now she has up to a $500 repair bill for a new windshield and maybe new hood paint if it doesn't just buff out, since that's her deductable. The dude kept driving as if nothing happened so we have no idea who it was. Of course when we told my family members about it, most of them said they would have turned around and chased the guy to at least get his license tag number. But she was freaking out so I was trying to calm her down and find out what even happened since I didn't see any of it. And if he's a redneck on a rampage like that, who knows how many guns he has in the truck and what lengths he'd go to anyways. Just really, really sucks that there's assholes like that in this world. Her car has to stay 3 hours away at my mom's house because nobody had a windshield for it in stock and they couldnt' get one till Tuesday. Luckily my stepmom loaned us her car for a couple days so that we could get back here and do our work or school. So huge inconvenience having to drive back there to get it, on top of the money. Just stupid.

    Fi q 12in ported or 15in sealed

Before I even got done reading the original post I was going to suggest this. A 12" ported will be louder than 15" sealed, also.

Do not buy a house with someone whom you are not legaly married to. No matter what. In no way does it make sense unless you can afford to loose everything you put into it. As for a down payment, If you are not married there will be an issue with the down payment. Whom ever is the first name on the house would need to have the whole down payment from their earnings or else they will have to pay taxes on the money from the other person. This may work better if you're both equal holders in the house and have the EXACT same down payment though. Seriously, unless you're married or they are your parents, don't buy a house with someone. Oh, yeah, forgot to put that in. I'd definitely either buy it myself or we'd be married. Going to live together in a rental next year at least, if not two years.

  16. Here's something you need to wrap your head around- an amplifier can put out its full power even with the gain all the way down. Gain position by itself has absolutely nothing to do with power output. You can't arbitrarily say 1/2 or 3/4 isn't high enough, when in fact, if the input signal voltage from the head unit is high enough, 1/4 gain might be enough to send the amp into clilpping. You answered your own question about everyone's gain location. It's different for everyone. So any answers they give are not relevant to your situation at all.

If my gf decides to go ahead with getting a PhD here, she wants to buy a house. But I only have about 10% of a down payment saved for what I'd want, and I will NOT go into a house buying without at least 20%. I just can't wait until we move in together next year (if all goes well). When I lived with a roommate two years ago, I was able to save ~40% of my net income every month. Now that I live alone, that number is chopped down to maybe 10%. I should be able to get back to at least 25% next year. Although if all this baby-making going on around me is as contagious as everybody says, I may not be able to save anything.

    SPL vs SQ

Oh, because of the tighter gap? I see what you're saying. Wouldn't it still be technically feasible, though, if you kept the woofer within linear limits with lower power so that the coil wouldn't rock and rub?

    SPL vs SQ

thank you thats what i wanted to know. He was being sarcastic. Anything can play normal music. You don't have to have only one or the other. There is very much a range from 0-100 in the SPL-SQ ratio. You can definitely have a 50/50 mix IMO. For instance, my ported box tuned to 30 hz is about 50/50. It has a bit of a bloated 30-40 hz response, but definitely plays more frequencies better than a box tuned to 50 hz for an SPL competition would. e wasn't being sarcastic at all. Specifically designed SPL subs will not fare well with music and will destroy themselves. An SPL install should have an SPL driver, that is of course if you actually want to win which would mean indeed a true SPL install would destroy the sub if it were playing music. Not at all. Daily is another horribly inconsistent and never used appropriately term just like SQ and SPL. 99.999% of people that use the term daily are really referring to an SPL oriented sub that isn't so SPL oriented that it can actually play music. I just don't think a sub would destroy itself. If your box is tuned to 50 hz for a true SPL install you could still just raise your subsonic filter to 48 hz or so, and with a steep enough slope it should be fine. It will sound like poop because its usable frequency range will be so small, yes, but I don't see how having extra spiders, motor force, etc. would destroy a sub on music.
  23. If they are coming loose it would seem that your sub box is vibrating a lot. Brace the inside of your box.
