    Outfitting a Dorm Room

Ha I thought that too, but honestly, the OP said for mostly dubstep, I think its hard to make dub sound decent under any circumstance... Anyway, more serious matters, my fear with the home audio stuff would be breaking it. Some jackass always grabs the volume knob and cranks it up as his drunk ears cant tell its already clipping like mad. Ive seen several receivers melt or just die at parties like this before. Plus, most have so little power, and home speakers are less efficient than PA speakers, so people run them clipped all the time. Sounds like hell and is still quieter than the cheap pro auido stuff... At least you can get a stupid loud volume without clipping... Rock something like these. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cerwin-Vega-V-15B-Used-3-Way-200W-PA-Speaker-System-Pair-/321038019345?pt=US_Pro_Audio_Speakers_Monitors&hash=item4abf5b6b11 When in a band in high school we ran an crappy old set of Yamaha 15'' two ways like this and WOW could they get stupid loud for only 150 watts each or something. They did outdoor gigs just fine but we eventually started borrowing a friends powered subs.

The two PA systems you've listed will work perfectly. No need to worry about processing/crossovers or anything. Get a system with two 15'' tops like that and an PA head/mixer and you will make most girls want to leave your party from the volume. In a small room, that stuff will be pretty outragous. Don't be afraid to go look for used PA gear like that too. Local bands and shitty DJs are always running out of money. Plus, with the PA amp and mixer all in one, it super easy to hook up and Ipod or mixer from a DJ in less than 15 seconds. Set a little EQ and gain and blast away. When you're ready, pick up a pair of 18''s and 2 500 watt plate amps from parts express and build yourselve some custom subs. Everyone will hate you in no time!

Can you elaborate on the baffle they used?

    So many components... Help please?

Thats what I'm starting to think. I'm starting to throw some ideas around in my head now. Probably keep things simple with a 4in round port. Do you think I could get away with ~30hz and 0.6ft^3 ? Im a little afraid that tuning low might leave a hole in the ~100hz range with only those little SPS 6.5''s up front... We are not looking for mirror ratteling lows here. Just a little fill on the low end...

Do you already have the Polk? There are a few choices I would probably go with over that driver in a comparable price range. Sadly, yes. Since this is kind of a "joint gift" to my sister my from my Dad and I, he'd was all hell bent on more name brand stuff; and I don't really blame him. My first thought was that one of those sundown E8s would be a nice fit on 300rms, but the Polk was on sale on Crutchfield. Rubber surround, DVC, and a cool "db" logo its gotta be sweet! Anyway, now I've got to decide on an enclosure...

    So many components... Help please?

Thanks for all the replies guys! I pretty much just decided to cheap out and go with some SPS due to the lack of external crossover, and figured I'd stick to the big name brand stuff. Techinally, my Dad is still the rightful owner fo the Jeep so I'm going to try to keep things a "least invasive" as possible. Should be a pretty relaxed little setup but I'll take my time with the install and I'm sure my sis will be more than happy. Itll end up with SPS 6.5'' comps powered off a RF P300-2. Lots of sound deadening for the doors. A little baby polk db840 that will get fed by a P300-1. Got a sweet little Alpine HU for her too! Should be a pretty fun install! Anyone had any experience with those little 8'' Polks? I was thinking of running it in a little larger then suggested sealed unless someone has another idea?

Heeeeeeeeyyy... if you don't mind me asking, where are you located? I'm a Michigan Tech student. Well I just so happen to be a Huskie as well... This is strange.

Well piss. Any suggestions for my general goal? If my sister doesn't like it then I'll have to deal with her... and thats not desireable... Yep. I suggest you go listen to some. There will be no uniform suggestion. Obviously Quentin and I don't feel the same so that ought to tell you something right there. Ha listening? I live in the U.P of Michigan. We are still trying to understand the fundamental difference between a harpsicord and a piano, much less find some place or someone with electronic audio equipment in their motorized people mover... Im just trying to narrow my options down a bit. I'd bet that we would nearly all agree that a pair of AKG K702 phones sounds better than some wizzbang skullcandy headphones. With SO MANY components sets in my price range, I have limited prior knowledge and very limited resources to listen/talk with others. Hell, my nearest Best Buy is about 2 hours away. I can tell you I don't much care for my Polk db651 coaxals in an S10, no color, and the "from the factory OEM woofers," paired with some random silk tweeters from parts express, in my '88 325ix, on 75watts, leave MUCH to be desired as well... Thanks for the input so far guys! Mike B.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't realize I could get those Focals that cheap... I might look into those a bit more. I have a tendency to like things low, and I've ended up with a lack of midbass in the past Anyone had experiance with the Access searies crossed at like 70hz? These paired with a E8v3 sealed might be pretty musical I'm hoping?
  12. So, my sister wants a audio make-over for her '05 Liberty as the stock system doesn't work well with her iPhone and speakers are pretty shot. She listens to a lot of music and A LOT of differnt types of music. Id like to hook her up with a really well rounded system that I can setup and forget it. I have a RF P300-2 Id like to use to power a nice set of comps up front and we'll probably end up going with a run of the mill Alpine HU. Its pretty hard to search for feeling on components on here becuase I feel like everyone either wants some that is just loud, or some that is way outta price range for her needs. We'd like to keep it under $200 for a set of 6.5'' comps that will be happy and dynamic on about 75watts. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Mbquart? DD? Alpine SPS? I'll probably end up giving her my RF P400-1 to pair with a sealed 8'' or similar. Generally looking for a balanced daily system that will play all types of music well. With no way to listen to any of the numerous component sets out there, I figure someone will have an opinion. Thanks in advance, Mike B.

    Tuned too low or...?

Ohhh I was kinda thinking it would be more like the effect of things getting louder when you roll the windows down but that makes sense too. So pretty much, I could try to shorten the port a bit, but mostly I'll just have to deal with it?

    Tuned too low or...?

Hi all, I just recently switched my Q10 from being sealed in an ext. cab S10 to .9cuft port enclosure in an '88 BMW 325ix. I took a ton of time designing the box for the bimmer because I was looking for more output down low so I shot for 27hz using 4in PVC. I got it all built up and installed and I'm slightly disappointed with it so far. Things just don't seem loud enough. I figured going ported AND in a larger cab compared to the S10 I would get more output but I'm getting significantly less. I must add, the enclosure is sealed up to the rear firewall firing into the cabin of the car through the ski pass hole so I have zero trunk rattle. I don't know how this would affect things too much tho. Also, the Q is being powered by a SAE-1000D at 2ohms, so getting ~600rms. It sounds hella good and smooth (except for a little peak at around 40hz) but it's just kinda lame, and i even get halfway decent response from kick drums. I just dont have the volume I'm looking for. I don't know if it has to do with too low of tuning, a shitty box build, cabin gain of the car, or what. Just looking for ideas of where to start trouble shooting. Any ideas where to start? Again specs are: 1988 BMW 325ix Standard D1 Q10, powered by Sundown sae-1000d 0.9cuft enclosure @27hz using 4in pvc box is sealed against rear firewall firing into cab. Thanks, Mike B.

    Port diamerter questions

Spent a few hours drawing some stuff up in NX5 (this is what happens when you go to an engineering school) I plan on sealing it up to the rear firewall firing into the cabin of my E30. I figured that I can get roughly 27.5hz using 4in PVC. Just a few fitment issues to work out but this is the general idea. Tell me what you think.
