SPL15 - Inverted not as loud

I did do some more testing. I inverted sub again and left the phase setting on the HU to normal. I switched the polarity by switching the + and minus at the amp. No change in sound either way. I did the same test with my Fi BL and it did the same thing. When I put either sub non inverted and reversed the polarity it sounded similar as to how it sounds inverted. When I wired normally, both subs sounded much better. Just to clarify, I'm only running 1 sub at a time. I'm not mixing 2 different kinds. One thing I did notice today is I can actually make the SPL15 bottom out when mounted normal. This only happened at near max non distorted volume (48/60 on my HU). It doesn't bottom out when mounted inverted. I'm guessing this is happening because of the higher tuning due to driver displacement.

SPL15 - Inverted not as loud

Yes. It didn't make a difference either way. I never did try reversing the polarity using the speaker wires themselves. Maybe the control on the HU doesn't work as it should.

SPL15 - Inverted not as loud

For the longest time I ran my SPL15 inverted due to my box being just under 4 cubic feet net. I also made sure to reverse the polarity on my pioneer HU when I ran inverted . A few days ago I got bored and decided to mount the sub in the "normal" non-inverted fashion. HU sub polarity setting was set back to normal rather than reversed. The sub sounds much louder now and low end reproduction is much more powerful. I thought by putting the motor in the box would decrease net volume therefore raising the tuning a bit. Doing so seems to have had the opposite effect. Box is tuned to 37ish with sub mounted inverted. Can anybody explain why this happened?

Dust cap coming off of SPL15

I have noticed over the past few days my SPL15 was starting to rattle. I just pulled it out today and noticed the dust cap is coming loose on one side. Do I need to use any sort of special glue to fix? I was thinking of using some superglue. I also was considering epoxy but it dries too slow. Thanks

    Box for SPL 15

Thanks. I think I managed to figured it out. I cut the hole 14 1/8" and it fit perfect. I saw that the SPL 12 required a 11 1/8" hole and the IXL 12 required a 11". The IXL 15 requires a 14" hole so I took at wild guess and used 14 1/8" for the SPL 15. I'm using 57.75 square inches of port area. According to my calculations that is equal to 2.04 6 inch round ports. That should be plenty of port area for a 15" sub with 17mm excursion. At least I hope my logic is right. I really don't want to have to rebuild this box.

    Box for SPL 15

Ok I'll put it on the top of the box. That'll give me the opportunity to mount the sub inverted. One last question before I cut the hole. What is the cut out diameter for the SPL 15? Would 14" be big enough because thats the max my circle jig goes to? Thanks a lot!

    Box for SPL 15

Thanks for all the input. I almost got all of the box together. I haven't cut the hole for the driver yet. I'm not too sure where to put it. Originally I had planned to have the sub on the top firing to the roof and the port on drivers side firing to rear. Looking at different SUV installs there are lots of sub and port firing to the back. I'm not sure which to go with.

    Box for SPL 15

Thanks for the input. I plan on sticking with 4.2 cubic feet and tuning to around 35hz. I'm hoping this gives me a decent sound. I have no idea on the acoustical response in a jeep liberty.

    Box for SPL 15

I need to build a new box for my SPL 15 due to getting a new vehicle (2005 Jeep Liberty). I'm thinking of going 3 cubic feet NET tuned to 38hz or so with 58 square inches of port area. Will this work out ok or do I need more air space? This will be a daily set up and likely won't be used to compete so I want something that is loud and decent sounding. Power wise I will be using a RF T30001bd @ 4ohm. I was previously using a 4.2 cubic foot box tuned to 32hz and it was quite good sounding but lacking in volume. I figured this time I would tune higher and try a smaller box to save some space.

    SPL-15

I ordered a spl-15 to replace my Fi BL 15. The box is a simple slot ported design. 4.3 cubic feet tuned to ~32hz. Amp is a RF t30001bd.
