    Q 12" pics & enclosure build

I've been using an extension called "Disconnect", and I just figured out that when it's disabled, all the pics show up. . . for some reason. Problem solved.

    Q 12" pics & enclosure build

Q 12" next an Alpine Type-E 12" HA I'm 21, never done much wood/mdf work, and this is the first time I've ever attempted building an enclosure. Fortunately, it's going in that narrow little trunk hole in the rear of my 4th gen Camaro, so the shape of the enclosure is pretty simple. (Also, only pic of my girlfriend who was there helping the whole 3 days for this project. If you can't tell, I'm a terrible person.) ↓ All done with a jigsaw. The planning/drawing out and cutting of the pieces took the best part of two days. Liquid nails and countersunk screws Flaring the pvc on a bowl in some boiling water. . . we didn't have much to work with. Believe it or not, this actually worked pretty well. 8 gauge to the threaded rods May as well have a look at the car it's going in. It's pretty COOL. Spray paint, t-nuts, carpet and done Alpine Xpower on the mids, Hifonics Brutus on the sub, and an Eclipse 30 band eq 2.5 cf net (after sub and port displacement) tuned to 30 hz. When those 30 hz frequencies hit, my car can barely hold up. I've already had to run a screw through the rear view mirrow & super glue it to hold it in place. And the glass over the rear hatch (which is EXTREMELY heavy) has some ridiculous flex going on). I'll try to get a video up soon. The sound quality is amazing. I'm particularly surprised by how good the system sounds with metal music. Even the fastest double bass sounds fantastic. Bands like Whitechapel sound so much better in this enclosure than when I had this same sub in 1.1 cubes sealed. I've never heard this kind of reproduction from anything ported. I don't understand why this setup sounds as punchy as it does. Is it due to the aeroports' relatively lower port area? The low tuning? Or is the Q just that fantastic of a sub? Either way, I must have done something right. . . I'm really happy with the way it all turned out. Thanks for looking.

    Q 12" pics & enclosure build

Hmm. . . this is weird. I've been using Chrome, and only 4 of the pics are showing. But I just viewed it in Firefox and they're all there. This doesn't make any sense, I guess it's just a problem with my pc then.

Really? I'm only seeing 4. There should be 9 or 10.

Thanks It would be better if the majority of the pictures were still here.

    Q 12" pics & enclosure build

I just came back here for the first time in a couple months, and like half the pictures are gone. Anyone have any idea why?

Most Lamb of God albums are too, particularly Ashes of the Wake and Wrath imo.

I haven't had the time yet, but I'll definitely check it out.

I'm not really into electronic type stuff, but I'll give it a chance in the car. Anyone into metal & subs should definitely check out Whitechapel: There are hits at 0:02 and 0:32 (and others) in this song that hit as hard as any rap song I've heard in my setup. & they have these pretty often on their newer albums.

    Fi Q issue

I copied & pasted exactly what Nick said, but I'm not going to pretend to understand it. ha But for the record, I haven't had a problem with it since I got it back.

    Fi Q issue

I just installed my new Fi Q12 today, and it sounds fantastic for the most part. But there are a few frequencies that are causing a loud rattling/popping noise. It's in a sealed box, I'm 100% certain I'm not clipping it, or overpowering it. Lower frequencies don't cause the noise, just higher ones around 100 hz I'd guess. The noise only happens at mid to high volume. It sounds like the noise is coming from directly behind the dustcap. Is the problem a loose dustcap? Any input is appreciated.

    Fi Q issue

Considering the recone, the man-hours involved in figuring out the problem, and shipping back to me, I'd be amazed if Fi hasn't ended up in the red for this transaction. So everyone at Fi Car Audio & on this forum, thanks for the help! Fi definitely has a return customer in me.

    Fi Q issue

I can't really give a decent review yet. I'm still experimenting with the amp settings, and as you could tell from the pics, I'm in desperate need for a new box. 5/8" mdf and a port covered up by a 2x4 and wood glue just isn't good enough for a $400 sub, ha. One thing I will say is, it's LOUD. I'm going to build a new box soon, and I'm taking my car to a shop to get my 30 band eq tuned with an RTA meter in a couple weeks. I'm pretty excited to hear that once it's all put together.

    Fi Q issue

I've had the sub back for a couple days now. I don't really understand what the problem was, so I'll leave it in Nick's words: We finally figured out that one spot on the surround delaminated one of the layers which caused the coil to rock sideways in the gap. I've never had this problem before which is why it took is a while to figure out what was going on so we could note it for future reference. We've reconed the sub and it's waiting on the shipping dock to be picked up this evening.

    Fi Q issue

No worries, it seems people everywhere have been sick a lot lately. And with SEMA last week and it being close to the holidays, I get that you guys really have your work cut out for you. I don't doubt that you guys have my back. I just thought I'd post an update, since the last time I posted here about a month ago, I ended with "I'll let you guys know what happens".

    Fi Q issue

It wasn't the box, the sub was still making the noise in free air. & I know it isn't an amp setting or anything because I have an Alpine Type-E in now, and it isn't doing it. Still no news yet

    Shipping back to Fi

There is a problem with my Q 12, and I need to send it back to Fi to work on it. I got an email from Nick that says: "The only thing I can think that may have happened is the coating that is on the top side of the cone body has delaminated. One out of every 1500 cones or so will run into this issue. Print this email off, place it in the box and send it in to us. When we get it back in I'll check it out or another tech will check it out and see what's going on." So do I not need a return authorization number? I just send the box with the email in it and that's it? Also, does it matter how I ship it? Is USPS fine?

No, I guess I'll go ahead and do that.

    Fi Q issue

After seeing the video, Nick's initial diagnosis is a loose dustcap.

    Fi Q issue

I've emailed sales with a link to the video, and a brief explanation. Nick will probably get back to me about it in the morning. I'll let you guys know what happens.

    Fi Q issue

Yeah, I've already been emailing sales about it. I really wish there were something I could do about it to avoid paying $50 to ship it back to them, but I also don't want to mess with it for fear of voiding the warranty. What could possibly be under the dust cap?
  23. TJ Fields

    Fi Q issue

I'm going to go ahead and get a return authorization number and send it back, unless anyone has another suggestion first. If not, thanks for the help everyone.

Like what? & what should I do about it?

    Fi Q issue

By the way, if you're looking at the pic of the inside of the box and wondering, this was a ported box. I just took a 2x4, cut it up, and used wood glue to cover both ends of the port. Then I just caulked around the edges. It's a really good seal. But none of that really matters, since it was making the same noise in free air.
