  1. My last question is about the HDC4's motors.

I noticed the motor weight of the hdc418 is 71 pounds and the hdc415 and hdc412 motor weight is 65 and 64 pounds

is the motor on the hdc418 a larger diffrent motor than you get with the other two sizes?

  2. Way back when I first started Audioque, we have been in business over 11 years, I sold Shizzon a HDC3 and two AQ2200D amps. At that time we built the subs in house and machined our own motors. We QCed every sub and amp before shipping but as luck would have it Shizzon's sub had a dead coil when it arrived at Sizzon's. I had him send the sub back to us and we found that a lead wire had come in contact with the basket and shorted out. We were using "direct connect" leads and the clearance between the lead wire and basket spider landing was very tight and we found the lead wire on that  sub could come into contact with the basket if the sub was subject to being handled rough or bounced around in shipping. We corrected the problem on the production line by encasing the lead wire with insulation in the area of the spider landing and sent Sizzon a new sub under our warranty.. We received no more complaints from Sizzon regarding the sub. That was the one and only sub to have that problem.

In addition I wanted to know what allowed this defect to happen to begin with. I found that the basket we were using was difficult to work with in the production process regarding the placement of the  "direct connect" lead wires. The best fix was to change to a new basket design which took care of the problem. The HDC3 series sub has proven itself to be a very reliable and durable sub over the past 11 years and has set many records in competition. We continue to upgrade the sub with the latest improvements as they become available. We use the best parts and production methods money can buy. We service what we sell and offer drop in recones for all of our subs at very reasonable prices.

We also sold Sizzon two of our AQ2200D amps from the very first production run. When I decided to get in the amp business I relied on what I had learned from the Digital Designs side of our business. I went to what I thought was the best  Korean amp manufacture available. I wanted to begin with two class D mono amps. One in the 1200 watt range and one in the 2000-2500 watt range. I gave them an open check book. I insisted on the very best of parts, heavy heatsink tooled to our design, and for each amp to have a factory "burn in". It's expensive to have amps made like this but we were "factory direct" sales only and had no "middle men" to pay so manufacturing price was not a problem. We could pay for the best and still sell at very affordable prices.

We offered the AQ2200D at a very good price and the first run of 200 AQ2200D's sold like hot cakes. Out of this first run of 200 amps we had only two amps come back and as luck would have it they both were Sizzon's. That was a long time ago and to be honest I don't remember all the details but I do remember the amps went back and forth a couple of times with Sizzon claiming the amps were defective and our repair person claiming it was enduser problem. We repaired the amps and or replaced them.

Long story short Sizzon was not happy. I did the best I could to make him happy, told him the short in the sub was our fault and replaced or fixed the amps. He has bad mouthed us on many occasions and the story gets better each time I read it. Truth is we sold him a sub that was defective, we replaced it. We sold him two amps which when we got them back from him were toast. We replaced them. I will assume they were defective when he got them.

Our family has been building subs both as an OEM builder for others or building our own products for over 25 years; we are not new kids on the block. We try our best to make the customer happy but every now and then it's impossible. If we make a mistake all we can do is admit it and try to make it right. We do our best to make sure it doesn't happen again.

    Dj, your the man.

  3. Hey everyone, this thread is me clearing up a few questions I have about HDC3's and HDC4's.

These are the two subs in question. (so it's easy to reference )

    HDC3:

    HDC4:

We are talking about 18" only

Whats the story behind the high Fs of the HDC'4?

Was this a non broken in woofer or something? The suspension is that stiff?   (equivalent HDC3 is 9hrz lower IIRC)

Between the HDC3's copper coil & the HDC4's aluminum coil

    1. Can I daily an HDC4 on music?

    2. Is there a large efficiency difference?

3.Why is the 4's coil an aluminum winding? Just weight savings and thermal dissipation?  is it worth worrying over?

Required cubic feet and port area?

Do they want the same?  &  What do they want?

    Everyone loves pics..

    First the HDC3:

    Then, the HDC4

    Lets see what everyone thinks.

    p.s. Happy birthday M5

  4. What? Thank you so so much for what you have just done.

huge money in your future. AQ/soundqubed has a following too!   like me

    Also,

Will SSA be adding a Soundqubed section in the forum. in the supported brands section?

  5. Whats the box size for sealed and ported? just for bass in the car cant beat the price. Anything happens to then no big disappointment

Soundqubed is vague but in a car these like 3-3.5 cubes tuned from 30-40hrz. sealed your looking at 2-3 cubes.

Each driver gets 7.5 cubes a piece for a total box volume of 15 cubic feet per enclosure in my set up though, so ... experimenting.

  6. Huge sealed box required and I wouldn't spend the money on the wood to house those things. If you have to use them as it has already been said do it IB. Wasting money on the drivers is bad, but even worse to waste it on the enclosure too as nothing worth a shit for Home Audio will work in the same box.

    ^^^comment is one big bummer.

It's probably worth saying that this is not a home theater setup. It's not a surround system. Is it a very directional, dedicated music system.

While I am aware that these drivers are not ideal, saying that they are a waste of money is a stretch.

M5, I'm not an SQ guy. let me put it this way..I'm the guy you probably hate who is trying to throw 700 square inches of cone area at smallish room in my house in a huge slot ported box. I want to work with you, but you cant do that to me man.

  7.

Honestly? I would try IB first... Do you have a basement below the listening room?

IB and an EQ and hope you don't run out of power or excursion too quickly. Those subs are not going to be ported friendly for the type of ported enclosure a house requires. And with their high Q and high Fs they need a large sealed enclosure to not raise the Q too high but are also going to roll off pretty early no matter what you do. To be honest your best bet is to sell them and buy something that actually fits your needs.

BTW you need to delete that picture of the dual 18 XXX's. It makes me drool all over my keyboard every time I have to scroll past it.

Could you give me an example of how my poor driver choice will manifest itself?

    (rolling off)

and also what do you mean when you say they are not going to be port friendly?
