    Fi Q 12 question

In "tuning" do you mean adjusting the qts for a sealed enclosure? I would do a ported enclosure and tune low, but I'm trying to conserve my cargo area. plus the port length may get a bit long. I haven't checked, and i guess i've never really thought about it, but in a sealed enclosure, was happens below fs?

    Sub Choice?

I've been set on trying to get a AE AV-12x, but they are so far behind that, I don't think I'll be able to get one anytime soon. Does anyone have any suggestions for a sub that works best in a small, sealed enclosure. i don't have an amp yet, so power isn't of concern, and I'm looking for something with great SQ, but I do like to crank it up once in a while. thanks for any input.

    Sub Choice?

So, if you had adjusted the low pass to say 80 hz, it probably wouldn't have made much of a difference? Just curious as a lot of the long xmax drivers seem to have a sharp roll-off after 60hz, and with my current setup, I need to have the low pass around 70hz.

    Sub Choice?

How is the midbass output on the xcon? Do you think a larger enclosure would have boosted the low end of the xcon, to make it more noticeable? I'm trying to find something soon. It seems every time i find something I want, it is no longer available or the price skyrockets. i.e., MASS 2012, RE XXX, SI Mag, and now AE AV's

    Sub Choice?

I currently have the DLS up6i's, SA SAX-125.2, and a Kenwood DDX-912. Even googling that Kenwood I come up with nothing... Even a simple 10" sealed will blend fine. No need to go overboard on the "SQ" driver. In fact, if you do, you'll probably end up harming it by turning it up too much. oops. It's a Kenwood DDX-712.

    Sub Choice?

ha ha ha guys! Old username. I use to do spl comps so, not that, that means anything I guess. Good way to make myself sound like a noob though, anyways... Like I said, power isn't of concern. Sealed enclosure preferred due to space for kids stuff. If a can get away with a small ported enclosure I'd do it, but they tend not to be too small. I do have have an 06 Trailblazer, and would like the box to not be larger than 2cubes net. I listen to a lot of rock, but i still have that part of me from the old days, so I like to crank up the bass once in a while, (bass mekanic, bass 305, some rap/hip-hop). Looking for a sub that has great transient response, something that will easily play to 80hz. I've tried a few subs that people called SQ subs, such as the RE XXX 05 series, ED AV2 (I know you guys don't like ED, and now I know why), I did have a DD 9512c that I did like a while back, but they are just too expensive for me now. But, most, especially the ED didn't play above 63hz. Tried various things so I know it wasn't cancellation. But... I want something that will blend well with my fronts, so a sub that is transparent is my main concern. i know most of this will also depend on the enclosure, install, blah, blah,... I just don't have as much experience with the SQ line of subs, i'm sure there will be some learning curve. I'm getting to the point where I'd rather have a clean sounding system than the bang the car next to me. I'm also on somewhat of a budget, so preferably a sub that is no more than 400, but ideally around 250. I've been eyeing up the SSA Xcon's, but I seem to find the reviews that state even a JL w6 is better as far as SQ is concerned. I'm planning on getting a different front amp, but probably keeping my fronts, which are the DLS up6i's. I'm not competing so I don't need to go crazy modifying, even though I'd like too. Just want something clean, smooth, and something that will reproduce every note as close to the way it is supposed to be, with the budget I have. I've also just found some fronts that do seem interesting from Audible Physics, so maybe in the future I'll sell my DLS's. A post for a later time. Hopefully I covered everything this time. I know all this is subjective, but ideas are always welcome. Thanks!

    shallow mount sub?

Ok, I think I changed my mind a bit, and plan on using an 8" down-firing, as I only have an 8 inch depth to work with. What 8's would you guys recommend? I would like the price to be kept under 150. Music type is kind of bass heavy, such as dubstep. Also, no amp yet, until the subs are decided on. Thanks for all your help!

    shallow mount sub?

I've was looking at the SI BM to use in a behind the seat install, but they don't seem like they will be ready in time to order. I don't have much experience with shallow mount subs. Just looking for some other options for brands. I want something that will work best in a ported enclosure. Don't have an amp picked out yet, so power will be determined after sub is picked. This is for my GF's younger brother, so it doesn't have to high end. I'll be building the box to fit behind the seats of a pickup. So, not much room. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!!!

    shallow mount sub?

Including driver, pole clearance, mdf/box, and excursion clearance? If so, good luck. Well, if I can find a driver similar to the SI, it should work. The SI has a mounting depth of 3.4", then allow an inch for the pole, 1" for clearance, and then 3/4" enclosure puts me at 6.9" It will be close, but would work.

    shallow mount sub?

I'll be able to post exact measurements this weekend, but I'm guessing I have about 7" of depth to work with. Width is as much as i need in a standard cab, and height will be as much as needed.

    W7 vs XCON

Just looking for an opinion here. I have not used either, but I have a rep that is trying to sell me a W7 for 400 and I've been looking at the XCON, but of course the rep is saying that the W7 is by far better than the XCON. He's stated that he has been a JL rep for the last 7 years and he has yet to hear a sub sound as clean and heart pounding as the W7. With no preference towards spl or sq, what do you guys think the better buy would be, or just give me something for arguments sake. He says that the W7 is a better built product and the research invested into the W7 makes it the better choice. I know some of what he says is true, and I'm getting dealer cost here for the W7, If I wasn't my guess would be the XCON would be the better buy. Maybe some examples of why either would be a better choice for SQ or SPL. I know everyone has their preference, and its all in the install, etc... Does anyone have any experience with both? Maybe I just like finding ways to get reps to shut up. I think either way I will get the XCON, because I don't like buying mainstream stuff. So, this is just really more for arguments sake, and something I can feed back to the rep. Maybe give him something to think about.

    W7 vs XCON

Wow! I really appreciate the comments and opinions. Sounds like either way I would go, would be a good choice. Anyone do a driver swap? The recommended enclosures are really close to eachother.

    AA Carbon's

I just recently found out about these and I currently have DLS UP6i's in my 06 trailblazer. Would there be any advantage getting the AA Carbon's over the UP's? I would like a mid that does play better in the 50hz range. It might be just me or even the install, but I find the UP's to be a bit muddy when played loud. Would it be OK, to just swap the DLS's with the Carbon's? I have the doors deadened fairly well also Overall, my main goal is to have the mid dig a little deeper, and be a little cleaner when the volume is turned up. Thanks for any suggestions.

    AA Carbon's

Agreed. Setting my amp gains to most output before audible clipping for dubstep and rap, then playing metallica I have to bump up the bass level on my deck from 0 to 2 or 3 Awesome! I do like the punch in the chest I plan on running the XCON sealed though, so maybe that will help. I really appreciate the help on here. I'm looking at getting this going after the holidays, so I'll post back when I get it all done. Thanks again.

I was mentioning 50hz, because that is what some people have been telling me I guess. I'm realistically looking at having the sub crossed at 70 (XCON 12). I like a little more impact from the sub. Problem is, I don't know if the XCON is capable of running up to 70 hz. I had an ED 13AV2 and was told it would exceed 70, but based on an RTA, 63 is where it rolled off fast. I really want a system that is going to give me some hard hitting kick drums, even the tighter metal kicks. Also, here is the site for my mids http://www.dls.se/en...?produkt=en_581 Was the RTA in your vehicle? Reason I ask is that you might have a vehicle-induced roll off around 63hz that is independent of the driver. You would have to RTA it both in and out of the vehicle to determine what affects your vehicle is contributing to the sound. Yes, the RTA was in the vehicle and we tried the sub in my buddies Escalade and same outcome. We didn't test it outside, but we assumed it would show the same result. We had a DD 9512 to test in my vehicle and it did really well, but needed some eq'n in the low end. Hitting a wall like that means one of two things. An electrical filter or a mechanical filter. Sure you didn't have a LP on? If not, there was some hell of a mechanical one. Did you try multiple enclosures? There is a way around it... I surely wouldn't use the AA's with the crossovers you have, but if you were to swap out those mids and run active fine. At that point though I'd change the tweeters as well. yep, tried different enclosures too. I did talk to someone at Elemental and they said the sub wasn't designed to go much higher than that. The inductance was fairly high. He didn't have an exact number, but he was assuming it was higher than 5mh. If I did get the AA's, I'd probably run them between 60 and 70, depending on how the XCON is going to perform.

Would you happen to know the xmax of the AA's? i believe the UP's I have are 5mm.

So if I cross the sub at 50, what am I suppose to cross the mid at? I suppose I could do a shallower slope on the mids. Also, has anyone listened to the UP's and the Carbon's? I would like something slightly better, without breaking the bank.

    12" XCON Le

I'm really curious to see what the Le of an 12" XCON is. My heart has been set on an AE AV-X driver for the longest time, but i keep coming back to SSA and ponder if I should just get the XCON. I don't have an amp yet, it all depends on what driver I decide on getting. My hesitation comes from getting a high xmax driver. Every one I have purchased has such a high Le that they typically never exceed 63hz. yes, I know I could beef up my front stage, but it would require a lot of modification to either fit a larger driver, or another driver. i have an 06 Trailblazer so I have the space, but I would like to keep it as a sealed enclosure. I'm not to concerned with the spl, as I already know the XCON will be a bit louder, but at the same time, I do like to crank it up. Anyways, I'm looking for some opinions on the kick drum output from the XCON's. I listen to everything, from pop, rap, metal, techno, to even classical. I find that sometimes the kick drums sounded good with the other high xmax drivers, and some didn't. I know it was the frequency, probably something around 70-80, so obviously they didn't play, or did but was such low output. I tried the crossover, phase, box placement, ect.. but nothing improved it, other than losing some low end output. Do you think the XCON will display a similar kick drum response as the AE AV-X? Thanks for any of your opinions.
