    Hunting for tweeters

I think we may be thinking of two different Seas tweeters. The one I mentioned was a large format. Not sure if that makes much difference though. The $200 is more along the lines for something that happens to be the ideal driver(pipe dream, I know). I never even considered used, though that is a cheap way to start.

I have been finding some Morel tweeters with excellent off axis response. Never really considered Morel before, any reason not to?

After reading this again, I remember you mentioning using the 25NFA(fabric dome). Is that what you are referencing here? Or have you used the 26NA(metal dome) as well?

Horns are a little iffy right now, though I could sell some stuff that's collecting dust to fund them. I don't have the processing power for them at the moment either. I would love to run some though.

What didn't you like about the H1396? I like a smooth, natural sound from my tweeters with a little bit of sparkle. I want cymbals to sound like cymbals, not frying bacon. No snakelike sibilance.

I am currently torn on the Seas 27TFFNC/G, Vifa XT19, and LPG 26NA in that order. I am still hesitant on the LPG due to the metal dome. My cousin had a Diamond Audio setup with metal tweeters and at times it was very harsh, eek! Maybe just that install/tune? The downside on the XT19 is the limited mounting options. All FR looks acceptable to me and price is fairly close(not really a factor at this price point). Any other input on these three choices at this point is appreciated.

I feel like an idiot. I just realized one plot was 0, 30, and 60 degrees while the other is 0, 15, and 30 degrees. Where is that facepalm emoticon when you need it? I can't seem to find much of any info on LPG, other than people seem to like them. I have noticed that the "Seas neos" seem to get a lot of praise as well. I'm guessing they are talking about either the 27TFFNC/G or 27TAFNC/G. Being that the mids will be way off axis as well, I am feeling like risking a little bit in the 15khz-20khz isn't as bad as risking the 3khz-5khz range. Being a 2-way plus sub setup looking for higher output, there are bound to be compromises.

I was actually seriously considering glassing the a-pillar, next to the sail and not inboard by the windshield. That driver side tweet is right in the face though. As far as the SB acoustics stuff, it just so happened that both tweeters I mentioned were that particular brand. I wasn't seeking them out for any specific reason. This is just getting silly. I am finding conflicting info on what I would normally consider decent places to find info. For example, Zaph audio is showing a FR plot for a tweeter, same tweeter on parts express has a plot that looks quite different. What gives?

I figured as much. When I was playing with tones in the Tahoe on the XS28s it seemed to roll off hard after about 12khz. Not sure if that was my ears or the tweeters. Not sure how I missed this earlier when surfing madisound, SB Acoustics SB26STCN-C000-4 looks promising. Anyone have any experience with this one? The only LPG tweet I could find available anywhere was the 26NA. Not sure how it compares to the 25NFA, but I'm unsure if I would like a metal dome tweeter. When looking for tweeters I am looking at the response curve up to about 10khz-12khz and the off axis response. I am finding some in the -5 to -7db range(60* off axis at 10khz). As secondary I am looking at FS(1500hz or lower), approximate power handling(75W+), and sensitivity to some extent. I am ok with a large format tweeter as there is plenty of space in my mounting location, unless it's like 3" deep. I hope I am targeting the right info for my goals?

In my search for tweeters. I am coming up with one question. How important is 15khz+ with regard to on/off axis response? I have found a few tweets that seem pretty good about the 10khz range, but nearing 20khz is a whole different story for off axis response. I found this: https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/soft-dome-tweeters-sb-acoustics/sb-acoustics-sb19st-c000-4-3/4-dome-tweeter-4-ohms/ Pretty dang good for off axis if you ask me, my only concern about this on is the 30 watt rated power handling and the output levels I am trying to achieve. For the price, it might just be worth a try.
  11. If 24" high is good, then the 3.46 cube internal volume before displacements is a good starting point. A ported 12" or sealed 15" should be pretty doable.
  12. Preamp voltage isn't quite as important as you seem to believe, especially boosting it up to 8v. Your install output will be limited by the size of your box more than anything else for your situation. Please follow M5 recommendations and see how big you can truly make your box. Help us to help you. Don't bother looking at subs right now when you don't know how big you can make the box. I think I now understand what you meant about the shape of the box and clearing the shifter. If I am reading this right, that will give you 2.86 cu. ft. internal air space. It would be a box 34"L x 20"H x 10"W but with an angle cut out of the top front(toward front of the cab) to clear the shifter. If you are able to go up to the 24" height you also mentioned, it would bring airspace up to 3.46 cu. ft. Unfortunately seeing something in your head and actually experiencing it can be very different. 24" high might make it totally awkward to shift, so could 20" hence why a mock up box would be very helpful.
  13. For the power and space you have, trying to find some magic wazoo sub to blow your doors off is probably going to leave you disappointed. I have had multiple sealed setups that "carried down the road" if that is what your goal is. I knew a guy with a regular cab ranger. He had a single Alpine type-e 10" sealed on about 500-600 watts behind his seat. It wasn't shaking the doors, but it sounded super clean and could be heard for a couple hundred yards. You have enough room in the center console for a sealed 12" maybe even a 15" that is ok with smaller boxes.

I think something got lost in translation. The original plan was to remove the single far right rear seat and put it there. The rear bench is a 60/40 split in these trucks. When I mentioned the center console, I meant placing my amps in the front center console like I did in the tahoe.

How is this for a teaser? I finally found a second xcon with a vented pole yesterday. I had to have it, my first xcon was getting lonely.

My normal commute ranges from around reference level and sometimes higher. Probably not the best thing in the world for my ears, but I like to feel my music and I'm not just talking about sub-bass.

I suppose it could be a mounting issue, considering it was my first "real" install. I thought everything was pretty solid though. I might add that it didn't happen until I was really pushing them, I just probably found their breaking point. I ran across your build log over on fullsizechevy the other day but unfortunately the pics are gone. Will probably have to run that over another time or two. My usual HPF was 80hz w/18db slope for my high listening levels. I could run 63hz w/12db slope at moderate volume levels and it sounded pretty darn good. I think if I could get the frequency response curve with the moderate level settings but at higher listening levels, then I would be truly happy with my setup. Anytime I had someone in my tahoe that wasn't into audio, they always said something about how clear/clean it sounded. Then I'd really turn it up and they just started giggling from the 18 in the back. Ported or IB?

Thanks. How are the ER18 on the bottom end? I really liked the CAs in my tahoe, but on occasion the lower end (approx. 80-150hz) got a little too warm sounding. Wondering if I was getting some cone edge resonations.

Off axis response seems equally terrible on most I can find. The Tymphany/Vifa NE19vts seems to have caught my eye. I am also playing with the idea of angle mounting the tweeter behind the factory grill to get them more on axis and cutting out the center of the grill and using acoustically transparent grill cloth to cover them. I'm not sure how much the factory grill affects audio though, maybe it's a waste of time.

Thanks, I think it's going to be a slow one this time around. Probably just above the mid in the door, behind the factory grill. Just forward of the manual door lock would be nice, but as much as I don't want to have the factory grill between the tweeter and my ear, I don't want to cut holes in my door panel even more. Something about resale and holes in the door. I don't even have any tweeters at the moment, so I'll need to figure that out as well.
  21. How much of a difference is there between the current xcon and the original with the boob dust cap? I know the newest ones have no more pole vent, but that's about all I know besides the aesthetic of the cone/dust cap. Could they be used in the same box?

18" DSS Trident D2 for sale

    Price drop. $500 shipped conus.
  23. I am selling this for the simple fact that I am downsizing my vehicle (yes the tahoe is for sale). and will not have room for an 18" sub. It is in excellent condition and looks just like new. It performs better than new as it is just starting to loosen up and move some air. ~2800 watts rms. Dual 2 ohm coils. It was/is run on a BC3500 at 1 ohm with plenty of electrical backbone(see my build log if you don't believe me). $550 shipped conus, local sale is welcome as well.

    2001 Tahoe daily driver

Looks like end of the line for this build. I am planning to down size vehicles so the tahoe is up for sale. I am sure I will continue my audio adventure with whatever I get next.

    2001 Tahoe daily driver

I figured I might as well start a build log on this one as it will be my first build that has some effort put into it and not just slapping things together to get something that sounds like music. This is my daily driver and will probably be ever-changing. For now, I am trying to keep it simple and as close to factory as I reasonably can. 22" VCT Scarface plastidipped and wrapped in 305/45 rubber. 2" drop in the rear with Bilsteins all around. Majority of the chrome has been plastidipped, only the grill strip remains. Front door windows tinted to match factory privacy glass. I'll have to get some better photos when the wind and dust dies down and I get some time to wash it up. Audio details to follow in the next few days.
