RL-i8's

Recommended Posts

Ok, well my boy is wanting two 8's. I directed him to the RL-i8's. I need some input from people who are running them already.

Some form of a review in a ported box would be great. Maybe a comparison to other subs.

Please let me know. Thanks

Well that suxs. I don't want to have him buy 2 and be dissapointed. He was thinking of getting 2 JLw7's and I told him not to waste his money. Hoping these will be similar enough for him. And save him some money.

Don't know why he wants the 8's. He is getting a darn expedition

he will not be disappointed, with a truck that size I would run an RL-p 15 or a pair of 12's

i've ran i tin a lil bitty sealed box, and it's by far the best 8 i've ever owned...cv vega and rf hx2 being the other two...period.

great sq and gets loud, even in the lil bitty box (.17ft^3 sealed) i'd imagine it will really come alive in ported...

with an expedition, i'd recommend at least 6...lol

but for real, why not get a pair of rl-p 12's or 15's?

I would venture to say that in a decent size ported with about 1k watts to mess with, a pair should get nasty for their size

That's my plan. Going to design a ported 1ft^3 tuned around 33-37hz for him. And they will be given a modest 1000 watts of power. Granted the enclosure might not require them to have that amount, So gains will be properly adjusted.

That would be awesome If I could give them a listen first. If he has them in his car that would be great. Maybe he could give my XXX a listen if he has yet to hear one :)

I think I read on here he was out of town in the bay area. Still no response to my email. So I'll be waiting patiently for a reply.

that MBQuart 1k amp that ryan snagged would be sweet for the RL-is

Hey trigger! I think that setup sounds like the ticket. Pretty sure I got back to your email earlier this afternoon.. if not, just send me a virtual kick in the ass and I'll get right on it :lol2:

Don't let your friend spend so much money on the w7's.. they're just ridiculously overpriced for what you get -- good subs no doubt, but damn the price! ;)

Alternately, if your friend craves a lot of output, you really should work him over for a larger driver (10's or even the premium 12's), as they will certainly offer more output and still allow you to use relatively small enclosures. But if space is his pet peeve, by all means the 8's will be nice :)

Indeed, I do run two RL-i8's in my car with roughly 300 watts a piece. Unfortunately, I'm up in the Los Angeles area and nine out of ten times when I'm down in San Diego, I don't have my little MR2 with me since I have to haul around so many speakers! ... we could hook one up free-air at TC, but that won't be very exciting (aside for the porn). In the rare event that I have a lot of extra time down there, I may be able to drop one in an enclosure - but it probably wouldn't be tailored specifically for the RL-i8, rather some leftover box they have in their demo room

At any rate, hit me back if you have any other questions. B)

Hey Mike, any pix of your install?

Yeah no doubt. Hell a Mr 2 with dual 8's must be sumfin because those damn things are smaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllll. I likey though.....I just saw one a couple of months ago that looked sweet (the last model not the most recent style) and it sounded like the Cosworth on "Getaway in Stolkholm 2". Hell we were in medium traffic and that thing was like wwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa pssssssssseww wwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa psssssssewwwww WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa as it took off (I was rushing to catch up and get a better look so I guess he thought I was ricer boy who wanted to race)

mike which model RF amp is that? p3001? or p6001?

RF Punch 6002 feeding each driver roughly 350 watts a piece (figured from the included amplifier spec sheet). I had used my Earthquake PHD3 (3000 watts) for a while, but it was quite simply ridiculous overkill so I decided to throw in the more practical RF amp I had layin' around that I picked up cheap a few months ago.

Honestly though, while my system suits my purposes just fine, I really should put some more work into it seeing as I run a subwoofer company :P The drivers are enclosed behind either seat, with roughly 0.5 cu ft airspace.. though I'm sure there are some leaks as I'm relying on the body of the vehicle for some of the walls.. so I suppose you could consider it a quasi-infinite baffle rig. Not bad by any means, but it could be better.

Since it's more than I need, I haven't been too worried about it - but seeing as I'm sure others who listen to it would love to witness the full capacity of the system so to speak.. I'll probably be modifying the enclosures to be ported, and may even put back the PHD3 just for kicks as a demo rig.

Mike you should have Kent or me build you a new box, and we can put TeamSSAudio on it :fing34:

- I know off topic, but how do you like the RF? power? sound? etc....

if I had plans for a SS or TL I would try to start building soon for a RL-i 8, but that would push back my LMT plans

Thanks for the response Mike. I also received your email. I will let you know what he decides. He is ready to purchase them (cash in anxious hand). So I will let you know what he decides.

I think I've talked him in to buying a total of 4 and throwing them behind the 3rd row seat in the Expo he is picking up this weekend. Of course he is not a big bass head and space was a, lets call it peeve of his

So he might try out the 2 and if he wants a bit more buy the others.

So again thanks for the reply and I shall let you know his decision.

Adam
