Fi Q arrived - First time experience

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

First, I need to give a special thanks to Nick @ Fi for helping me choose my first Fi Audio Subwoofer (Q12) and making the experience one of a kind. Now on to the sub...WOW, if this thing sounds half as good as it looks I am so in for a treat. I am so impressed with the build quality and down right size of this thing. I have always used Digital Designs for subs, but with my S2000 I needed something that would work in virtually NO space so I began surfing forum after forum for an answer. Needless to say, Nick was able to fit me into a perfect sub to match my build limitations. I am currently located in LA and we are obviously missing out on the Fi experience! I have attached a few pics of my build and will post more as I progress.

Pics coming soon....issues uploading images

Congrats on your purchase! Funny timing, I just received my FI x12 sub today as well. Hope they work out for both of us!

I must say its funny timing too I just got started building a box for my friends RSX, which will house the Q12 we just ordered (Matt Morgan, Albany area NY, Dual 2/Cooling option/Red dustcap). The box is big, like 2.8 cubic tuned to 29Hz with a 15"x4" slot port... gonna build a rounded fiberglass baffle, all smoke-grey colored with a fire red port color to match the dustcap... I am excited for the build, hopefully Nick can get me that woofer a little earlier than expected as the box should be built by the end of Feb. (jk Nick, take all the time you need just happy to support the Fi cause)

But are you going sealed with the high Qts option? If so I want some feedback, I have yet to try that alignment with the Q but I have a friend who loved my Q15 response ported but has a F150 with no room at all, like 1.1 cubes total. I told him the freq response would be way different (obviously to ya'll but he's not so sharp on the subject), but I want to find him a decent alternative. I could stretch 2 cubic out of it with a weird box shape, but I still want some feedback.

Maybe Nick can tell me; hows a Q10 or 12 with high Qts in a tiny tiny sealed box?

Well...I am hoping to have everything hooked up in about two weeks. Currently waiting on my Kinetik and working on my amp rack. I am very anxious to hear the Q in a small sealed box. I went with high QTS and ring options. Box is 1 cube before displacement. Will post pics as soon as someone explains how or suggests best way to host and attach as a link...help?

Tiny sealed boxes will always be anemic on the bottom end..

There isn't a magical woofer that simply excels in no volume.

The Q is still magic to me

Finished the build for my NY buddy, drove it up there a wee bit before he got the woofer so we gotta wait for loaded pictures, but heres so far:

What we're shooting for:

Now this is at 1 a.m. before I was supposed to drive it up to him at 7 a.m. so I had to call it

I was planning a red stripe across the middle of the box, but ran out of time. Luckily my boy Matt is also a car audio guy so I just dropped him a little mmore carpet to finish the job. I offered to do it for free if he got the Q so he cant really complain about having to put a little effort in :)

Nice snug fit in the trunk of his RSX (which he is painting candy apple red in the near future hence the box), I was a little worried he wouldnt measure it carefully enough but he gave me real accurate dimensions to work with. Nevertheless he was more than happy, threw the JBL logo in to rep his amps as a surprise, he was stoked. Almost couldnt finish it as the paint was NOT DRYING! got a few propane heaters going and a hair dryer or two, but even dried up the paint pooled into the 45 in the port:

Got a Q10 being ordered by another buddy, gonna do a real small SQ style setup in a Jeep, that project should be started next month probably.

That's another excited Fi customer; his Q12 arrives sometime around the 8th... he called up his entire city to come hear my N215

Well guys...after emailing back and forth a few time with Scott, I decided to scrap the first box that I purchased because it ended up only being .75 cubic ft before displacment. Box builder suggested adding a bag of polyfill and Scott said it would work but I just couldnt see choking the life out of a beautiful Q12. After a few phone calls, a friend of 10 years who runs a local car audio shop fiberglassed a mold of my lower trunk compartment. We were able to squeeze 1.5 cubic feet sealed :woot: Much better! Everything is hooked up and all I can say is that this Q12 could possibly be the smoothest most musical SQ monster I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. Much props to Nick and Scott for the first class level of customer service I recieved.

PS...can someone help with details on uploading pics??? Only option I have is to link an image via URL.

right click on the picture you want to use, copy image location, then just add it between [ img ] and [ /img ] like this... [ img ] your photos image location here [ /img ] without the spaces in the img brackets. If you catch my drift

Gonzales, eh?

We should meet up, I've never actually known anyone locally that has used a Q for its intended purposes. Most of the ones I've heard were spl setups.

And I think I know where you get your DD from ;)

If you know where I used to get my DD's from, then you must know a certain friend of mine that has moved back to the islands of Hawaii. I still have a bit of work left on the car (tons of Dynamat needed!), but we can definitely hook up soon. Just let me know.

Testing pic upload. Geez...you would think that this would be a no-brainer for someone who works in IT! :puzzled:

Nah, seems about right, at least for the guys who work for our company's IT department. LOL

In all seriousness though, glad to hear there's yet another Q lover. They truly are some of the most fantastic sounding subs.

Figured I would add a few picks of the system so far. Enclosure and amp rack will be finished with carbon fiber soon.
