wow i havent heard that in forever...

But yes, 2 is the answer.

Apparently, the other TI calculator wasn't given proper instructions in it's firmware to know basic rules.

Sad though.. that one is newer :(

I'm going with 288 :eek5wavey:

It can be either or since multiplication and division are in the same rank. The Multiplication/Division and Addition/Subtraction are interchangeable based on which order they appear in the equation.

so

48/2(9+3)

48/2(12)

24(12)

288.

I vote 288! 9+3 = 12.....48/12 = 24 therefore 12x24=288!

2. multiplication comes before division.

Multiplication and Division are the same step. They should be done in order of left to right after the parenthesis so the correct answer is 288.

I'm surprised the ti-85 said it was 2...

But it's definitely 288. Not only is what i stated correct, but Mathematica, Matlab, and Java all agree with me as well. (just tested)

The answer is 2. I just tried it two different ways on pen and paper.

This is algebra (which I got a 92 average in last year). It's just basic P.E.M.D.A.S.

Yea you have to distribute the 2 to the 9 and 3 then divide 48 by 24 and that makes 2 the answer

It's your basic order of operations...The stuff you learned in Pre-Algebra.

What this is here is a poorly written equation.

48÷2(9+3) =288

48/(2(9+3)) = 2

I'm Thinking 288, Eggyhustle and Frostedflakejake are right that Multiplication/division are interchangeable, so then priority goes left to right. 48/2*12=288.

you are wrong because Parenthesis comes before all that...

Seriously like Duran and kirill said..

We should be lucky that these equations are not used in car audio, lol.

It's plain bad notation.

Correct, so you would add the 9+3 first, but the 2 isn't in the parenthesis, so then it reads 48/2*12=288

NO... u are doing it WRONG...

Parenthesis inside AND anything strictly attached to it is done FIRST.

9+3 = 12

2(12) (This STILL needs to be simplified before solving...

So = 24..

Now we have 48 / 24 = 2

Not according to the guy with a doctorate from MIT in theoretical math and another from GT in Electrical Engineering.... but ok

Where did you learn this?

How about we write it like this

48 ÷ 2 x (9+3)

48÷2 x 12

Multiplication and division are on the same level, therefore you work left to right, you don't do one before the other randomly because you feel like it.

What this is here is a poorly written equation.

48/2(9+3) =288

48/(2(9+3)) = 2

maybe i am looking at this wrong

The answer is 2.

The order of operations is: Parenthesis > Exponents > Multiplication = Division > Addition = Subtraction. IN THAT ORDER.

The equation is: 48/2(9+3)

[Per the order of operations, solve everything in parentheses]

So: 48/2(12)

[Now solve multiplication]

So: 48/24

[Now divide]

2

The 2 next to the (9+3) means you multiply it to the parenthesis. It doesn't mean that it is given a higher power.
