I was told by the guys at fi that for music the n2 would be better

you said spl...

for music your gonna need more than 5.5 (for an 18) generally speaking. go with some 12" n2's or two 12" xcons if you want it to sound decent

If I had $900 I'd get an SMD 18".

Yes, and they can be had for less than that I believe.

And they are designed to be used in small ported boxes.

But, those things love some power.

I'd go with 2 12" Xcon's, or BL's, or either a 18" SMD. But honestly, 2 12s seems more practical to me.

Well meade himself said the 18" SMD will work at its potential in 5.5 cubes. The recc. Volume is 4-7 cubes

yes but then theres also sub and port displacement, and those smd's are going to take up alot of space inside that enclosure. 2 12" zcons would be so amazing, or even 2 15" nightshades, i heard the NS works good in smaller enclosures

5.5 net is 5.5 net; vent displacement does not come into play

Exactly. That is what I have after everything is taken into account.

i'd still do the 2 twelves. youll be happier i think. be able to handle more power in the long run (subs depending, but all things being equal) youll have CLOSE to the same amount of cone area either way.

its all in what your looking for though. if you wanna do an 18, by all means do that. but if your asking for opinions, thats mine. 2x12
