To each their own. If the PlayStation didn't play games it would be taken as the best multimedia device on the market that involves an all in one solution.

The fact it plays games makes people think of it as less of a machine. It really is the best and a used PS3 is cheep.

xbox one has that pass thru thing. you can "snap" a tv channel while you game.  never tried it myself as i dont have cable. 

 

i think the ps3 when it came out was one of the cheapest bluray players at the time.

Hell you can find a PS3 on CL for 100 bucks. Game stop certified is like 150. Well worth the money, and a great lens on it (in case your disk is scratched). Well worth the cash.
