nadcicle's 97 Suburban rebuild

Recommended Posts

Well the time has come for me to go ahead and show some progress with the truck. This thing has been through hell and back with me from repairing the lower intake manifold to having its fair share of abuse from low tuning.

The first setup consisted of 3 18's on 2 AQ 2200's strapped with a single XS D3100 in the back for support. Let's just say this didn't work and had me reconing the subs.

Best recorded score of the 3 18's before blowing them.

Sadly, I bought an alternator that was actually sitting in the backseat at the time I was giving a demo and blew the subs. Unfortunate for me, it was a fuckin Tenney that didn't work! It looked nice and legit though...

After learning my lesson I had a holdover system that consisted of 4 12" Planet audio BB2 series on my strapped AQ2200's once again. This setup actually gave me my best score to date with a 52 at the headrest which I didn't take seriously since it was a burp box and never recorded it. Also, I never did manage to make a show before reconing my 18's and getting a 4th one as seen below.

Well, This enclosure was originally intended for only 3 of the 18's since its net was only around 17 so it was time to build yet another enclosure. Yah, so adding the 4th sub actually dropped the frequency response and the score as well.

I never got a good picture, but after displacement and everything I calculated right at 21 cubes here for the new enclosure. This was built to be super flat and boy did it play pretty much anything and sound awesome doing it.

So that leaves me where I am today. I will go ahead and let the cat out of the bag and show my plans. I'm sure to forget something here, but here we go. Everybody likes pictures so I will let those do the talking.

Mechman Elite Was told the peak number was actually 386 in their record book. I felt it might have been a fib:

sweet subs !!! smile.png

 why that amp ?

Was previously explained that it managed more power than a Crescendo 5500 and also reflected the same gain on a meter. Only for those 2 reasons did I choose this amp as their isn't another amp for the price/power ratio that would meet/exceed it other than a brazilian. By all means if you can get be a couple ns1's for the same price I paid for these then hook me up. I am not devoted to any brand at the moment unless their performance holds true.

Are the subs 15" ethos?

Yes they are. I downgraded cone area and went up in power.

Little update. BTW, if anyone could please merge my two identical build logs i'd appreciate it. I dunno what happened cause I only submitted it once so idk.

Anyways, I hate you guys that make this look easy cause rings are a bitch.

Got me one of these here rabbits cause I wanna make it look all purdy like.

The largest one is mighty close!

IMG_20140602_1840191_zpse5910708.jpg

So, good fit IMO. Now I'm thinking of either just slapping another ring under for extra support or somehow gettin all fancy and putting one on time and rounding it over. I think the second option won't be beneficial as much cause it'd be covered anyways with resin and all. Opinions are welcome.

That's it for today. I managed to get 14 rings cut out and still 2 short. I did manage to get all 8 rabbeted at least though. I am tired of breathing mdf dust for the day.

So I went to grab my sander to do some light sanding and the damn twist lock removal for the dust capture is broken. Gonna have to send it in for repair. In the mean time sanding by hand sucks. I'll get back on this soon.

They will be installed Saturday I'm pretty sure of it. As far as playing that's a different story cause the crimper comes friday and I'm not sure how long I can work before I die of heat exhaustion.

I dread rings more than cutting for my enclosures. The reason why is because it's actually more overall cutting and I despise mdf dust. It gets on EVERYTHING and I hate it. However, it is the cheap solution for rings and is the easiest to make curves and weird shapes out of. It also doesn't split when making precision cuts. The biggest disadvantage of mdf is swelling and flexibility IMO.

Well, I had to choose between mids/highs and finishing substage and I preferred to try and keep it at the substage for now with plans to continue with mids/highs when I get back from slam.

Proper mounting hardware 3/4" and 1"

He just got done crimpin a guys dick after the guy came up short on drug money.

Quite possibly the smartest $50 on install equipment i've bought next to a pair of wire cutters. Makes crimping ends so much better than hammering lugs on.

Lol, yah. If it weren't for him I would of had a catastrophic failure from one of the major components. Luckily he seen it early and I was able to remedy it. At this point I'd rather not say what it was out of respect to the maker. I'll leave it up to the close-minded to assume its my horrible CT-Sounds amps for now.

Box is curing. Batts are in. Wires are ran. I will mount the subs tomorrow and redo the amp rack to something a bit more intuative that'd make it easier to get to both amps.

Over look on my part bring stingy with the glue. Spent all day today addressing the situation. If any of the other spider packs delaminate let me know and I'll send out recones.
