    I'm considering a switch.....

I have decided......No change! Only thing different is going to be my box. I am going with 11.6ft^3 (after displacement) all single chamber with (5) 4"round X 11" long ports. It's slightly on the small side for 4 15's, but...I will obtain my goals with it.

Ok....I guess you're right. So that means I need to design a bigger box to go ported with the 4 Q15's....I have a basic idea, but I don't think it will fit, so back to the drawing board. Also, the person I have building the box wants to use 1" mdf instead of 3/4" so that affects me specs too......man, I remember when I thought 1 12" sub was loud.....what's happened to me? lol Question about cancellation..... I have 2 subs firing back and 2 subs firing up. Thats the only way I can fit that many in the magnum. For the ones firing up, what is the minimum distance that should be between the face of the subs and the ceiling? I dont want cancellation or to restrict the air from the back.

    Picture of my Q's

LoL, I can't fix the sub. Three screws broke off in the wood, so I had to shift it around a little to get the sub to hold. Once I get teh ported box done. The subs will be sitting pretty again.

    Got Metered in the Magnum

So.....I just installed the 4 Q15's in a sealed enclosure (8.6ft^3 after displacement) running on a IA 40.1. The car is a '07 Dodge Magnum, a 140amp Alt, and a 2nd NSB90 Battery. The meter was an AC, but it was recently calibrated and actually metering about 3 db lower then the other one I was previously metered on...(not that that reallly means anything) anyways, I hit 163.5db outlaw and 162.1db legal. I am competing tomorrow on another AC, and I'll let you know how I score there.

Box size vs # of subs

Ok, so I'm kinda of right then....I can put all four in a 9-10cube box single chamber and port it and I should be fine.

Box size vs # of subs

My first sealed box for my 2 Q15's was 4.4ft^3. It sounded perfect. Now I have 4 Q15's sealed in 8.6ft^3 (after displacement). It is a little less then half the doulbed volume of the dual sub box. I assumed that my roll off would be nearly identical to my first box, or my tuning would be slightly higher, but it is actually opposite. It peaks at 35hz +/- but rolls off quickly above 40hz, as if the box is too big. Could it be possibe that the specs need to be adjusted do to box size or the amount of subs used? Maybe because it is all a single chamber? Because if this, I am considering doing a box that is about 10ft^3 with 4-5 4" round ports tuned to 34hz. That would technicaly give each sub 2.5ft^3. I am attempting to gain a few more db's without going to an all out SPL setup with SQ subs and without having to put a permenant wall, which I would need to do if I went to 12ft^3 like the actual specs require. What do you guys think?

16" or 17" I think. That will keep it lower then the back seat too. You can't really see thru the tint anyways. I'll measure tomorrow for you.

    Got Metered in the Magnum

OK, I don't know how accurate the meter was lastnight. Today, I hit 156.1 legal and 158.0 outlaw. But all of the cross bracing on my roof is broken, so now the roof flexes like crazy. I did get some video. If I can figure out how to convert it, I'll get it posted for you.

    Got Metered in the Magnum

Yes, I know I would score lower on a TL. That is why I specified that I was using an AC mic. With my previous setups, I usually hit ~5db lower on the TL. I have no reason to make anything up. That's what I am hitting. The box is 39"W x 19.5"H x 25"D sealed. With 2x4 braces. Go ahead and build it yourself... I'll try to get a shot of the meter reading when I compete later today. It's on a different mic, but still an AC. I'll get you pics from the show too.

    Got Metered in the Magnum

I've heard, but never have had a car this loud before, and there are only 3 cars that I know of that have broken 160 in Miami, so that's pretty cool. Other then that, I only hear loud cars at Daytona for SBN. Funny thing is that I am almost afraid to turn it up. I still need to tweak it too. The amp has gone into protect mode a few time while I was messing with the gain with the volume up, but I know the basic area where the cutoff point is. We are taking a DMM to it to get it tuned. Oh yeah, both those scores were @ 37hz!!!!

    Over powering subs? (Q Series)

I am selling my MD2, and I have a 40.1 sitting there for when my 2 other Q15's arrive and get installed. My questin is... If I am careful with the gains, is it ok to run only 2 Q15's on a 40.1(rated @ 3600w rms @ 1ohm)? Or should I just wait until I get the 4 pack installed?
  17. BryanTheCEO

    "Q" , SQ loud ??

Yeah, the Q is a great choice. They wang hell-a-loud in a sealed enclosure too.

    Over powering subs? (Q Series)

While I was playing with the gain a little bit, I could smell what I assume was the subs, so I turned it back down and it seems to play fine still. If I smelled the coil burning or what ever would burn on a sub (this was an electrical burning smell) Is it too late for the sub and it will continue to get worse, or will they be fine at the proper settings?

    Over powering subs? (Q Series)

WOW! I would say that adding the additional power of the 40.1 from the MD2, made at least a 1-2 db increase in my output. Now I REALLY can't wait until Wednesday when I can finish teh 4 pack!!!!!

Thanks for the responses. I have been doing this long enough, that I should know, but I tend to 2nd guess sometimes.

    4 Q's or 2 BTL's

This is somewhat of an extension of my other thread.... I decided to sell my Q15's to buy a pair of BTL's, but that would required alot more upgrades to my system (batts, alts, and bears oh my) This morning, while I was sippin on my coffee, I was thinking that I could ADD 2 more Q15's and an amp running around 4k-5k watts and keep it sealed. Yes, it would still put more stress on my electrical system, but I am more equiped to handle that ATM. I have dual batts and a 140 amp alt and lots and lots of 0awg. I also like the sound of the Q's sealed. They are so damn authoritive down low in a sealed sealed application. All my high scores are in the 35-38hz range, which I love. The Q's ported hit 151.7 on the AC @ 37hz, but the pair sealed, already hits 150ish on the AC, so if I more then doulble the power and double up on the cone area, what do you guys think? Money wise, I would need to spend around $3k to run the BTL's the way I want to and only around $2k, not even that much, to run the Q's. I'm not tryin to be cheap, but I got a kid to feeds and purses to buy for the wifey..=) 4 Q's or 2 BTL's? Bryan

    4 Q's or 2 BTL's

I think I am picking up a IA 40.1 and running it at .5ohms. I do not listen to the subs at high volume for more then a few minutes at a time, so I will not be beating on the excessively. I think these will make a nice combo.

    QUICK QUESTION

YOu are having the same brain fart that I am. Except I choosing between 2 15" BTL's or 4 15"Q's.....The Q's won though Out of your 2 choices, I would go with the 2 BTL's and put more then 2k to each if possible.
  24. BryanTheCEO

    4 Q's or 2 BTL's

I'm not sure now. I need either 4k rms @ 2 or .5 ohms...any suggestions? They are getting 2.1 cubes each, 8.4 total after displacement. It is exactly double what I had the pair in when they were sealed.

    4 Q's or 2 BTL's

Yeah, I think I'm going with the Q's....Time to place my order! One question though.... What are my wiring options with 4 dual 1ohm subs? .5 or 2, right?
