  1. I've never seen a port like that. Strange. How does it sound? Are you happy with it?

That box sounded like shit, it was full of holes, had a harsh kinda buzzing sound to the upper bass fq (above 50hz), the lower fq were fine. It took me most of a tube of silicone just to try and plug most of them and I had piles of sawdust under the box (looked like little ant hills) from it blowing out of the holes. But I took it back and made him build me a new one, this one is a little shorter with less airspace but the same width and port size, so its tuned lower. He took his time and built it airtight, with the exact same port design and it made a whole world of differance. Now it sounds amazing, I even started listening to more rock and country to hear how great it reproduces the natural bass notes and the fast cascades and kickdrums and stuff like that as opposed to the synthisized bass of rap(not that there's a problem there either, I just enjoy hearing it).

So it doesn't seem to affect the sound in a negative way (I've never heard another DCON) and I am very happy with it, my friends are pretty impressed too.

  2. Vortec 5.7 best most reliable engine ever made, in my opinion.

The Vortec 5700 L31 is a V8 truck engine. Displacement is 5.7 L. It is the last production Generation I small-block from Chevrolet. The cylinder heads feature combustion chambers very similar to those of the LT1 V8, but without the reverse-flow cooling. As such, the L31 head is compatible with all older small-blocks, and is a very popular upgrade. It offers the performance of more expensive heads, at a much lower cost. It does, however, require a specific intake manifold (a Vortec head has four bolts attaching the intake manifold as opposed to the traditional six bolts per head). The L31 was replaced by the 5.3 L 5300 LM7. The 2002 model year was the final year for the L31 5.7 L small block V-8 whose origins date back to 1955. The Vortec 5700 produces 255 horsepower (190 kW) and 330 ft·lbf (450 N·m) of torque. It is currently being produced as a crate engine for marine applications and automotive hobbyists as the "ramjet 350" with minor modifications.

    L31 applications:

    1996-2003 Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana full-size vans

    1996-1999 Chevrolet/GMC C/K full-size trucks

    1996-1999 Chevrolet Suburban/GMC Suburban full-size long-wheelbase SUVs

    1996-1999 Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon (and 2000 Tahoe Limited) full-size short-wheelbase SUVs

    1999-2000 Cadillac Escalade

  3. Hopefully we didn't scare him away. Of those choices id go with the typer. But for the money id look at db-r.com. they do amp refurb work and have a few decent amps there for sale. They are refurbed, but he kn ows what he's doing and there is a year warranty. They have a sax100.2 for 160 that'll push 400 real watts to 4 ohms. They also show a saz1000 for 260 that'll do 600/1000 to a 4/2 ohm load. Pair either with one of of the sa-12 s and you would have a good sub/amp combo for 350 or 450. You'd just need to build a box and get your wiring straight and you'd have a good/dependable setup.

I don't know about him, but I'm glad you posted cause if he don't take it soon, I might go get that 100.2.

  4. If your box is tuned to 31hz and your amp has a fixed ssf at 25hz, then you still have some room for damaging your driver.

eah, if i do I'll just go back to 2 10in DCON's in a sealed box. In the mean time I'm waiting for a better box to put the 12 in and see if that helps.

What if I tuned the box to 25hz??

  5. Glad you like the Dcon, but 2 questions as I am not sure if we talked about it before or not:

1: What is your enclosure tuned to?

2: What is your SSF set at?

There were a number of instances where your Dcon was playing very low frequencies, in a few cases the microphone could not pick them up or my office headphones could not reproduce them. When you play well below the tuning of your enclosure, you risk damaging the sub woofer, as the air spring effect is gone and the shape of the enclosure is no longer controlling the movement of the cone. So please be careful when pushing the driver below tuning, or even playing below tuning that much.

The box is supposedly tuned to 31hz and the SSF, well thats a mystery, I can find no literature on the SSF setting of my amp it's a Diamond D400.1. Also the box is still full of airholes, I am having a new box built this week and its gonna be sprayed with bed liner, do you think it will make a difference in the SQ or output??

OK, just called Diamond Audio and they said it's set at 25hz.

  6. where can i get stickers i can put on my car?

They will be in next week! Just ordered quite a few of them.

They will be available in the SSA store at that point.

    Thanks for repp'in SSA!

Email support@soundsolutionsaudio.com specifying which color and your address, Aaron will get them to you :)

We are out of the "give away" versions. We went through 1000 of them.

I want a big white one like you used to have on the back of your Hyundai.

  7. I don't think you can get a PR Dcon. Why don't you just port it?

It is in a ported downfiring box, but the surround hits the carpet under the box sometimes and that can't be good for the sub. I was just thinking of trying something different since I already have a forward firing box for it.

  8. I'm not very good with box designs but what do you, and by you I mean people that know about this stuff, think of running 1 SSA DCON in at roughly 2.5- 3ft^3 box with a passive radiator??? I like the idea and it would solve a few issues for me, but Im not shure how it would sound. I know thats a pretty big box for a DCON so what would the consequenses be?? This would be in a foward firing box in an 02 ext cab GMC sierra running at about 400watts.

I know nothing about passive radiators except that there supposed to act kinda like ports, I think, so any help with tunning or suggesting a specific radiator would be appriciated.

  9. Mtx makes their preloaded enclosures using ports like this. A port is a port as long as it has enough port Area and tuning frequency typically doesn't mAtter if it's square, triangle, flared etc. As long As you have those two you're okay. But I think it's just a thing with Mtx besides them I know of no one else who does their ports like that. Nor do I know how to calcualte it

Yeah, but a trianglular port with a rectangular opening???

Shouldn't matter.. ports are tuned by area and length. So the cross sectional area of the triangle should be equal to the area of the rectangular opening. Do the numbers. Let us know if this is right..

I'll take some mesurements this afternoon when I wake up, I'll post whatever I find out, but it sure does still sound good.

  11. the best sub ever and the weirdest box I've ever owned, I think I got screwed, but it still sounds good, I think that has more to do with the DCON.

Has anyone ever seen a triangular port with a rectangular opening??? WTF!?!?!?

  12. Nice vid man, watcha gonna put back there?? Nevermind didn't read the other replies first.

went to go make a vid of my shit after seeing yours and it started raining, wtf.

  13. Your subsonic should about 3hz lower than your tuned frequency.

I would loose my interest in car audio completely if my SSF was stuck 3hz below my tuning frequency...LOL

to the origional poster...sounds like the enclosure is at fault or the subs just

have not had a chance to loosen up

I have installed Dcons and they get right down and dirty with the low stuff

oh I loosend them up alright, its viberating the front wall of my truck bed and when the bass "kicks" if feels like one of my kids is kicking the back of my seat, lol.

  14. Good read, great info. thanks.

My amp is designed (old school, class a/b) to run best at 8 ohm mono. I need to read up more on class d amps.

sorry for the disruption, thanks for the info.

That seems counter intuitive. The good old school amps weren't cutting corners like today and were surely happy at loads under 8 ohms.

Either way on a sub there is NO WAY that you are going to hear a difference anyways. The amount of distortion you can sustain before your ear can hear it at low frequencies is disgusting.

I would also bet that this is partly the problem the OP has. In his previous setup he ran it into distortion creating a sense of loudness, the Dcon's it sounds like aren't setup in his box to do that which can surely make it seem to be quieter.

    What???

  15. OK OK OK, whoever said just let them brake in was right, and who ever said just let them play loud for a couple of hours was right. I spent the last three hours playing 20hz test tones and sine sweeps and deep bass musik, after my sub sat the my truck in 98 degree heat all day, and the lows are back as a matter of fact I'm getting the same kind of sound as I was from the 10's only I got louder lows and the bass seems to kick harder than before.
