  1. As soon as a do a clipped burp or two, I can smell the coils. Clipping does induce heat. Duran, burp a square wave.

I've burped a square 30hz wave as previously stated. Didn't even get warm. That was over the drivers rms also. 3 30 sec burps back to back just so I could read the score of each.

You have HDC's right? Those are known for being underrated and having high inductance (steep impedance rise). Was it clamped?

  2. pictures or this thread is worthless

He's supposed to post pictures of things that haven't happened yet?

once hes able to not right now lol you must be a SMD member too bringing your gay attitude here lol

    Lawl. You cannot be serious.

  3. Seems like there are a number of guys staring at 160. Not bad for a little no-name internet SQ brand.

You know...pretty soon that's not going to be a valid crutch....

Haha I'm kidding. Looks like a ton of fun. Hopefully I'll make out to a big show one in my lifetime

  4. I'm not trying to sound like a jerk. Sorry if it came off that way. I remember that issue with the drivers he used now. I couldn't remember every thing that was said lol

Haha its cool. I just don't like people telling half the story, especially when it doesn't help in any way.

Another thread arguing whether clipping hurts or not. From my experience, I can burp all day unclipped and not smell the coils. As soon as a do a clipped burp or two, I can smell the coils. Clipping does induce heat. Duran, burp a square wave.

I don't mean to start more trouble but all they'll tell you is that your experiences don't matter because you don't understand them. I always thought that was funny. But I'm just as tired of arguing as I am seeing "clipping does nothing." All I was trying to do is give the guy both sides of the story so he could make an educated decision based on his experiences just like you and I can. Y'know, give him the info and let him go from there on his own.

    EDIT

I don't know why the topic of clipping is always made to be more complicated than it is.

I agree, but see what I posted above. When you say "clipping does not blow subwoofers" and nothing else...it implies something totally different from what you're explaining. If he had said "clipping only increases average power, it doesn't blow subwoofers" I would not have replied at all. I agree that there's lots of misconceptions floating around in this thread but I was just trying to put the info out there.

  5. I am very excited... after the incredible success of getting a TON of stroke from the SA-8 v.2 it's now time to move up smile.png

When can we expect to see these on the X and Z series subs? I don't think I saw where that was said but I might've missed it.

I cannot give a specific date just yet. Depends on how tooling goes, if any tweaks need to be made, etc, etc.

I will also need all new voice coils with taller formers.

So does that mean a major change will be made to the current Z series? (I know the X isn't out yet.)

  6. I would love for some of the people who think they are getting a good deal from a company that outsources all of their work to china/korea to see how LITTLE goes into producing a subwoofer or amplifier. ANYONE can start making subs or amplifiers out of the country with a little bit of capital and a bit of time. People don't realize they're supporting 300% profit margin...

You can spend a whole bunch of money designing a woofer and it might still suck. I'm not saying that off the shelf subs are great but it's not a cardinal sin of car audio to own and enjoy a tried and true sub with a different label on it. Same goes for amps. If it works, lasts, and it fits my budget then what exactly is wrong with it?

  7. I've played an aq hdc3 on a fully clipped 1000rms at 30hz. Never got warm or smelled or anything. So what's the difference of a 2500rms sub taking 1200rms fully clipped? I would hope 1600 watts wouldn't burn a btl up sad.png

I remember reading somewhere where Nick (Of Fi Audio) explained that not only does clipping cause an increase in power but also limits the sub's ability to cool itself because of the movement of the sub mimics that of a square wave (it sits and collects heat, then slams in reverse and sits and collects heat) instead of a sine wave (where it would slow down at the peaks and valleys and always be moving).

Of course the speaker itself can't go from rest -> peak-> valley instantly so it does cool, but not as much as it would normally.

*take all of this information with a grain of salt as I am working from pure memory and don't fully understand all the concepts here. But I think I have a basic understand of what's going on.

95honda did tests, I just gotta find the thread. There is lag in the suspension and it will not sit for aslong as you think. Doesn't just stop-start like a machine.

I think we remember the same thread. There were also concerns with the drivers that he used because iirc they didn't rely on excursion for cooling as much as the high power subs we use. I understand the suspension lag issue also, I was just pointing out what Nick said.

  9. Clipping does not blow subwoofers. End of story.

That's a half truth. Sorry. I could never agree with that no matter what. Clipping/Distortion (whatever you wanna call it) can cause an amplifier to make much more power than it would normally. That's like saying texting doesn't cause car wrecks. Your cell phone can't drive a car...but..you get it.

If A leads to B and B leads to C...then A had something to do with C. Will clipping always cause a speaker to blow? Absolutely not, but that doesn't mean that its something you can ignore. I'm not calling you out, but when you say something like that you should explain your reasoning otherwise people could take what you say literally and that wouldn't help them at all.

  10. Op, you say it like its a bad thing. It's not like its shipped here from China.

And what exactly is wrong with that?

Never, not once, have I considered not buying a product because it is made in China. What is your point? Chinese built products are inferior?

Let me ask you this. Does SSA design their own product? Or do they pay somebody to do it then slap an SSA sticker on it?

Made in USA or not I like to buy from audio manufacturers that design, test and revise their own products.

Thisssssss. There are American-built woofers that suck ass and Chinese woofers that are awesome. America =/= better.

And as a side note, I originally ordered from a company (not going to name which one) who builds their subs in the U.S. to order. They were out of stock of a certain part so I ordered my Sundown SA-12 and it shipped the next day. That is a definite advantage IMO. Sure you loose the ability to customize things, but having my product in 3 days is a plus no matter what product it is (not knocking SSA in any way though).

EDIT: Please remember people...the companies who have well thought out products that perform equally as well do so by their own hand. Not just randomly because of what country they make their stuff in. I'm absolutely positive that there is some China in everybody's car that they enjoy on a daily basis.

  11. I know when I ported my SA's it was totally and completely different. It was so much louder I had to double check to make sure the gain didn't get cranked up or something silly like that.

    Just my experience! smile.png

I would find a way to port the 12's... tongue.png

This...sealed to ported is like holyshitfuckwhathappened!?!? Can you port the Xcon before you decide to switch out subs?

  12. That looked fantastic!!!

Why thank you. The steering wheel flex is kinda lame on the camera though. It moves much more in person. The window flexing in and out turned out nice though lol

  13. Nice! What are your plans for the next setup?

Hmmm...Well I had my heart set on 3 15" GCON's, but I don't know if I'll be able to afford it (need some suspension work done as well as a few cosmetic issues to deal with) so I might end up going with Obsidian 15's depending on how much the GCON's are. As for the rest of the build I'm shooting for two sets of HAT Imagines for the fronts (one in the doors and kicks) and a couple of batts that'll help me run 3k til I can afford a HO Alt.

  14. My SA-12's showing off why I tuned so low. I figured I'd take vids of this setup since I'm about to tear it all out.
