  1. The 10" 4 ohm model just came in today so I decided to take a few pictures of them all together. We've had the 10" in 8 ohm for some time now. At this time all sizes 6.5 / 8 / 10 are all in stock in 4 and 8 ohm coils. * Not everyone realizes it; but the 10" model has a separate motor and a 2.5" coil compared to the 2" on the other sizes. * 6.5" model * 8" model * 10" model

    New Sundown Project Vehicle

So... I want to do something for real this time and actually get a vehicle that can handle some weight and still drive around without issues. Concerns about driveability have really hampered my previous plans for something large. I really do NOT like driving huge vehicles either for the most part. I happened across a really interesting vehicle by chance on Craigslist last week and decided to pull the trigger ! 2006 Chevy Express 3500 w/ Duramax Diesel Engine! I test drove it and it was alot more comfortable for me to drive than most huge vehicles and has some real power behind it as well. I am looking at mostly music and mostly impressive demoing but would plan to compete in bass boxing and bass race with it. We are talking to Shok about wiring, planning Excessive Amperage for alternators, XS Power 16v batteries, and of course Sundown subs, amps, and mids. As of this moment I am thinking about 8x 18" woofers in a 4th order... initial box estimates put me at something like 100 cubes or so while leaving room for box thickness, amps, and batteries... so looking @ 3-4 cubes or so each sealed and 8-9 cubes or so each vented (so either 1:2 or 1:3). Other thoughts have crossed my mind like a bunch of SA woofers... but I know plenty of our Team members have done that already. I don't expect this to get done quickly by any means as we are looking into ways to beef up the doors, floor, and ceiling before we even touch the woofers... we'll also likely get the door panels made first as well (these doors look like they can hold a ton of mids easily). * 8 lugs are nice for this kind of weight ! Later on I'll put nice rims on it as well but these will do until the real work is done. * Dash isn't the best for SPL by the looks of it but that isn't the biggest concern for what I want. * Has a ding on this side... but overall a clean van.
  4. I got the first pictures in of all of the new cones / surrounds -- they are on the way to me for testing so hope to have some mocked up soon! 10" cone / surround (with revised material from last picture) : 12" cone / surround : 15" cone / surround : 18" cone / surround (for the 6-spoke) :
  5. One of each showed up for us to check out -- will be building a 12" up first since that is the largest one I have a full size spider for. So that means I can take a video of it tomorrow ! On to the photos... they turned out way crazier than I imagined. 18" Cone ---------- 15" Cone ---------- 12" Cone ---------- 10" Cone

Sundown 2012 Cones... At The Shop!

The 257mm spider isn't here yet; just waiting on that. any idea of what a recone kit will be like for the NS2 with these new parts? 15 no? I don't have the costs in for the new parts yet. Once we confirm that it's all 100% final with our factories then we'll get costs in.

Sundown 2012 Cones... At The Shop!

LINEAR x-max is generally defined as 70% BL -- I would say it's "usable" if the coil is in the gap still; not low distortion by any means but the coil is still controlled by the magnetic gap at least somewhat. Beyond that it's not really useful and just distortion, IMO, but I prefer to allow the coil to "peter out" on it's own via dropping BL than by locking up the suspension hard (if at all possible to do so within a given design). Less damaging and allows a bit more of the dynamics in a signal to get through.

Sundown 2012 Frames : Cone Samples

I am still using the 6-spoke for now for 18s -- the tooled 18" will come later in 2013. I did make a 257mm spider adapter for the 6-spoke, though !

Sundown 2012 Cones... At The Shop!

With the frame exactly "standard" size the spider we wanted to use wouldn't fit without over-lapping the terminals. The difference is really very marginal; no different than allowing something like a 10W7 or heck, even a square woofer (more Sd), in a 10" woofer class.

Sundown 2012 Cones... At The Shop!

    I saw some folks expressing concerns over the "SD" of the cones... here are a few photos : * 10" Z v.3 Cone // 10" Z v.4 Cone * 12" Z v.3 Cone // 12" Z v.4 Cone * 12" Z v.3 Cone Diameter with 1/2 Surround * 12" Z v.4 Cone Diameter with 1/2 Surround * Total SD difference is only 10% * 10" Z v.3 Cone Diameter with 1/2 Surround * 10" Z v.4 Cone Diameter with 1/2 Surround * The 10" frame is slightly over-sized... so it's actually slightly more SD

2012 Frame / Cone -- First Built Woofer

I have noted some doubt on whether all of these new parts will be of major benefit (not in this thread, of course, but I do see alot of things around the internet) -- what I say to that is; stay tuned for the results !

2012 Frame / Cone -- First Built Woofer

Here is the wire I knocked loose -- you can see it through the vent. The piece hanging off is the part after the connection is cut so I can still play the driver (eg: not shorting out on the motor). Coils of this type have four windings -- I broke just one so I am running on "one and a half" coils in the video.

    Questions about NSQ

Quite possibly -- did you catch all the specs in the old thread ? It is that exact woofer that I used in my car.

2012 Frame / Cone -- First Built Woofer

I am kicking myself a bit for getting crazy last night with it, haha... what I did was push it hard enough to exit the coil completely from the gap by a large amount -- the 12" frame supports 50mm of one-way travel not counting frame thickness... 59mm with frame thickness... and 71mm with vent spacer thickness added -- minus 8mm for triple joint ring so we can go 63mm one-way before bottoming the ring... and we have 62.5mm in the motor... so I had it up around 60mm one-way (which is actually 5mm PAST surround linearity)... which makes the coil about 1/2" past the gap *laughs* So when it came back down it knicked the top plate and knocked loose 1/2 of one voice coil (the coil is an 8-layer bifilar which is wound as a quad; so you can knock out 1/2 of a coil by breaking one wire) and this wire is rubbing on the top plate now making that metallic sound (I can see the loose wire through the vent spacer -- WOOPS!!!). Either way I have some ideas to minimize that possibility; although, I must admit, I was being totally careless with it to do that! Needless to say it was pretty crazy and just me being too happy with my new toy

2012 Frame / Cone -- First Built Woofer

I did get a little too happy with it last night when I first fired it up -- you'll hear a small metallic sound because of some slight damage I did to it then (woops!). Either way I was still able to get a good test out of it for this video and show it in action -- with more testing to come as we get more prototypes together. The good news is I'll be able to make it even tougher on production thanks to my mistake =)

Sundown 2012 Frames : Cone Samples

Once I get all the parts fully launched on 3" coil designs we'll start on some 4" coil designs -- perhaps 1/2 way through next year for prototypes.

Sundown 2012 Frames : Cone Samples

Ricci, All of the designs in the works to use specifically with these frames so far will run out of motor force before the suspension or mechanical clearance is spent -- either coil to back plate or triple joint to top plate bottoming would be nearly impossible. When paired with some existing motors we've made the new parts will open up a possibility of hard bottom -- on most of our motors that is past 40mm one-way still. I'll likely end up using a bit of spider limiting on future designs that are pushing towards what we can support mechanically. In car audio designs if the motor still has force and the suspension runs out the end-users will break neck joints -- so I've tried to steer away from that as a limit The Z v.3 18" surround is a pretty good high roll unit -- it's linearity is good to the 30s -- it will move into the ~40mm range without tearing -- and I have seen it stretch a bit beyond that but it's in the range where it would fatigue and tear over time and certainly not linear. I do have several ideas in the works that would support full copper pole sleeves as well, yes! The cut-outs are not exactly standard -- they are as follows before paint : 15 -- 352mm (13.85") // ~14-14.125" standard range (OD and screw holes are the same as a 12-spoke so can still mount in the hole if centered) 12 -- 282mm (11.10") // 11-11.125" standard range (close enough to fit most cut-outs) 10 -- 255mm (10.04") // 9.25-9.375" standard range (this one is farthest off... had to push it out slightly to fit the right spider) Thanks for the comments

    SAZ-1200D Prototype

I've had this guy for a while but it seems I never posted up about it. Here are some photos of it -- tests out very similar to the SAX-1200D in power but is in our new narrow casing with a new layout. Pre-order coming soon along with 2500D v.2 and 3500D v.2 models... ETA by end of January 2013. * Much smaller than SAZ-1500D
