    Welcome to the IHoP v.2

Went and looked at the Husqvarna today and walked right the hell out and headed to the Stihl dealer. The Husky felt like a cheap plastic piece of shit. My son and I checked out the Stihls last night and I liked the 251 Woodboss better than the 250. So I went up to the chainsaws and the 251 was gone! Dude told me that a guy came in this morning and grabbed the last one. So I said fuck it, just give me the 250. So he takes it in the back, oils and fuels it up and goes to start it... 30 pulls later we decided that was not the model for me. He ordered me a 251 Woodboss. It will be in on Wednesday. The Husqvarnas seriously disappointed me. They are always touted as such a great saw. I have played with their older models and was extremely impressed. When I grabbed up the Huskys at Lowes I was shocked. They looked cheap, and felt even cheaper. I know that the Husky combi units like my Stihl are Honda built, and they are impressive, but the Husky saws feel like cheap Poulans. The small, less expensive "entry level" Stihl 170, 181, and 211s were even nicer to the touch. They felt more substantial, even though they were much smaller (5-10cc) than the Husky.

I got that from a local wood crafters show. But I have bought some from http://www.veneersupplies.com/categories/Specialty__Veneer/ Try looking for Cocobolo, Macasar Ebony, Bubinga, Rosewood or Sapale. I have a ton of Sapale Pommelle laying around that I would love to use. I have been contemplating a nice 2 way passive Dipole with a small incorporated active sub. FWIW, that is unstained mahogany. You can also stain it if you so desire.

Thanks, Neal. It's been a lot of time, effort, work, money, and frustration! At some point my quest will be over... of course that would involve 2 VAC Statement 450S IQ Monoblocks, VAC Statement Phono, VAC Statement Line pre, some Tidal Sunray T1s and a Goldmund Reference ii. Of course, I would need to with the lottery to pay for that cool 3/4 of a million dollar 2 channel analog set up. For records... Jeezus.

    Welcome to the IHoP v.2

Matt, which Stihl saw did you buy? I am wanting an 18-20 inch saw, 2.5 or better horses and reliability. I also want an anti-vibe body. I want to keep it around $300. I have it narrowed down to the Stihl 251 WoodBoss at $329 and the Husqvarna 40.9cc 18 incher for $299. Both have anti-vibe and easy self oilers. The Stihl has an extra .5HP, but the Husky has a decompression valve for easy start. I feel like I want another Stihl, but Husqvarna is also a strong choice. I don't want to seem like a Stihl fanboi, and Husky has a killer reputation. Even though the Sthil seems like the best buy, I want to be sure you have no regrets. My Stihl saw is ~40 years old, so I don't have any personal ownership experience with the newer saws. My experiance is using friends'/neighbors' Stihls and my experiences have all been positive. I just want more owners' opinions.

Thanks Julian! I veneered them with curly mahogany, added black walnut on the edges, 1 coat of schelac and 16 coats of brushing lacquer. I have about 2 months of finish work into them.

    Welcome to the IHoP v.2

Too bright! I got the Gold Lions today. They come with a 12 hr breakin, and I let them warm up for a couple hours after work. They are glorious! The top end has a nice sparkle that was missing with the Tung Sols. The bottom end is way fatter and much more agile. Drum impact is angry. Tube drum reproduction is so much more realistic than solid state. While it may seem unlikely, it is true. I have noticed power tube changes seem to have more impact on the impact (hehe) than preamp tubes do. Overall the money I spent on these tubes seem to me to be worthwhile. They are a little high, but not terribly higher than decent Mullard or Tung Sols that just don't compare. I am anxious to hear them when they are burned in all the way.

I have never heard anything bad said about them. Tube compliments are readily available on the cheap, too. The red Blue Sky is so sexy. The first time I saw one I fell in love with that chassis design... Perhaps it is why I love the look of the Jolidas.

    Welcome to the IHoP v.2

I wanted the old SJ Jolidas from years back. The newer JDs and Fusion amps have auto bias, signal processing and other such goodies that color sound in the signal path. Their initial offerings were strong on the "nothing in the signal path" principle. However, with the push for the market to offer fancy gizmos Jolida has followed suit. The end result is, my amp is far more true to sound than the newer amps. It's no Diva Blue Sky (my dream "can really afford it" amp), but it sure is awesome enough for me.

    Welcome to the IHoP v.2

My amp is strong as fuck. With what I have invested in it, I fucking stole it. It needed a little work when I got it, but for just a few hundred bucks I have an easy $2500 amp. Sonics are impressive and output is massive for tubes. My mains are extremely inefficient, so I am anxious to get them onto a set of Paradigm Prestige 85F or 95Fs. They have a 10db/w sensitivity benefit over my current mains... they must sound sickly loud by comparison, plus based on the 2.5 way crossover design I bet they are much more dynamic. I will have them by Christmas.

The KT88s will be ~32. They are 2 in series per channel, so double the output. Gold Lion are pretty much the gold standard for sub $200 tubes. They are finding their way into Manleys and MacIntosh all over the place with killer results. I just hope they don't fatten it up too much. My current set up is fat as fuck, but it almost seems a bit bloated on the bottom end of complex passages. I think with a little more shimmer and a lush midrange the fatness should be a bit better in the overall blend. With a high gain preamp tube I may be able to do better, but I opted for slightly reduced gain preamp for sonics. Those old 50s Mullard ECC83s I grabbed last month are my pre. Without spending $4-500 a tube for my pre I lose about 3-5db of gain from the floor for the money. I grabbed matched, low microphonic ECC83s for ~$50 a pop. Generally they run for $75-125, so I stole them. I got 4 pair in total, all matched pairs. I didn't want to risk losing the opportunity.

It is linked to the home network. I can modify all the devices and their control from my pc. The remote just affords a simple traditional package. For someone who is so into simplifying the complex, your opposition to such a device shocks me. I am forced to assume you haven't really used one. Harmony is no where near as nice as it gets, but for the average user who can't afford Crestron devices and Crestron programmers, they are really great alternatives. I've been on boats that have Crestron integration and it is really awesome. But I don't have a few grand for the setup, and my home doesn't have the automation that would make such a device a worthwhile investment... Too busy buying tubes ... Speaking of which, I bought a matched quad of some Genalex Gold Lion KT88 power tubes for the amp. I'm excited about it. KT88s usually offer that sexy blue glow. A pair of Gold Lion KT88s in action. Keep in mind, those sexy bitches are almost the size of an average man's fist. The GL KT88 is one of the most commonly upgraded tube in the MacIntosh 275 monoblocks. They don't have quite the gain of the 6550s I currently employ, but they offer a really fat sound with glorious midrange and a slightly relaxed top end. I should see ~65 tube watts per channel, just a shade under the 70 I am currently humping. But at 70 watts it is still strong as fuck.

I started with the One. It was my favorite by far. Right now I have the Ultimate with the hub. I can control RF, IR and bluetooth. They are learning remotes too, so you should be able to do what you want fairly easily. The hub also allows all tablets and smartphones to be used as remotes, which is cool. Plus I can obviously use it in closet if I so choose. The Ultimate is really easy to set up on your PC. They just released the Elite, which I like much better than the Ultimate. My qualm with the Ultimate is button placement. The One had tactile buttons all low where your thumb fell on them naturally. The Ultimate attempted to focus on a more smartphone like approach using gestures on a screen. With that in mind, they laid the tactile buttons above and below the screen. The Elite was a return to the old One remote in a much nicer package. If you are tired of bullshit, just try the Harmonys. One touch and my TV is on set to HDMI1, DirecTV Genie is on, Receiver is on and set to TV/SAT. One more touch and my Genie is off, my TV is on HDMI2, my receiver cycles to DVD/LD. It does everything, including some home autimation if you are so inclined.

So I have never done a ceiling fan with a remote. To those of you who have a remote fan, can I bury the antenna in the ceiling cup? The wire hanging out is the antenna. I am not certain how it will work if I hide it in the stainless housing. I would love to bury it but I am unsure of how well it will function.

Thanks guys. A PITA but under way... Rug to tie it in... Rough idea of color.. Stripping the ceiling. Unfortunately it was shot right on the sheetrock, so I have had to do a lot of repair. This is a serious mess and a serious PITA. I will never do this shit again. New ceiling fan and color on ceiling in the rooms. 3 speed, variable LED light level and all remote controlled.

So far behind. Hope everyone is doing well. Been renovating my living room, kitchen, dining area and main hallway, hence my absence. Been stripping popcorn ceiling. I fucking hate that shit. Going grey and blue, semi-modern. Going to wall mount the TV and I am trying to figure out the layout of the system. Trying to get the work done before the new furniture arrives. Will post progress later.
