I was able to get my cell phone working again, albeit only on the wireless charger, so I have a cell phone I can use to text and use on a speakerphone at home. I guess it beats nothing ...

Every Toyota dealer within 50 km of me is shady as f*ck. I was helping a friend buy a car and she really liked a Nissan Altima that the Toyota dealership had, but something didn't seem right (hesitation on acceleration on a VQ35 definitely isn't right, even with the slushbox) despite their assurances that they had fully tested it, etc. I told them we needed to have it inspected by a 3rd party, so we took it to the Nissan dealership (about 40 minutes away) for a pre-purchase inspection and, low and behold, fails the compression test and a few other tests they did. Was not happy. So we take the car back to the Toyota dealership and ask them why they failed these tests and yet they were telling us that it had passed all of theirs and the sales guy's response was, "Well, we don't do those tests when we do our ___-point inspection." You don't do a compression test on a used car !?!?!?!?!?!? You don't check to see that one of the rotors is on its last legs ? You don't check the shocks to make sure they don't need to be replaced ? On top of that, even after we declined the sale, the sales guy kept phoning her at work and they wouldn't refund her deposit until we threatened legal action (for both illegally holding a deposit and harassment).

I knew Canada was behind the times, but damn, can't even get a battery in a timely manner? Oh, I know, it's ridiculous. Every store I went to said they had to special order it and they all pretty much gave me 2-4 week estimates to get it in (including non-OEM battery models) but at 3-5 times the price. We're not that far behind the times

    Welcome to the IHoP

Battery in my cell phone died today and it won't even charge. Only places that sell them are in the US and it's 2-4 weeks to ship to Canada. At least it was cheap, but now I have no phone until mid-to-late January. At least I live in southwestern BC where snow is about as common as unicorns, so I don't really need a cell phone to bail me out of a bad situation.

    Quality or quantity

It really depends on how much space you're willing to dedicate then. A 15" will typically (not always, but typically) require a larger enclosure than a 10" subwoofer. If you're looking for punchy bass, you're likely going to be best off with a sealed enclosure that's on the small side of the design parameters or a ported enclosure that has a decent output in the upper-double digits. A sealed enclosure will offer better transient response (not a big deal with rap, so don't worry about it), but going on the small side will sacrifice low-frequency output and overall output will be lacking compared to a ported enclosure. A ported enclosure will require more planning during the design process as you'll need a port large enough that it won't generate port noise and a larger port will require a larger enclosure to attain the same tuning. The downside is that increasing the size of the enclosure will increase the output at low frequencies and decrease the peak in the higher frequencies, which will reduce the "punchiness" of the system, so you'll need to find the correct balance to suit your tastes. It also depends on what subs you're comparing as you may be comparing a low Xmax 15" to a high Xmax 10", in which case the 10" may have a greater displacement than the 15".

  12. For future reference, on Acer/Gateway/eMachines/Packard Bell (all owned by Acer) machines, if you press Alt+F10 when you first start the computer (in your case, when the eMachines logo comes up), it'll boot into the recovery partition and you can re-install Windows from there.

Merry Christmas everyone. It's been a while
  14. Well, the Xeon I have can use ECC or non-ECC memory (motherboard dependent) ... It's mainly just a higher-binned Core 2 Duo that operates on a lower default voltage. You should be able to OC ECC memory ... Whether or not a server motherboard will give you that option in the BIOS is another story, however ... Intel had the Skulltrail platform a little bit ago that used ECC DDR2 FBDIMMs that could be overclocked ...

    Badmouthing my setup

There is one store local that has this attitude. They carry DD, Focal, Memphis and American Bass. Their idea of pricing is MSRP and then put in on sale for 10% off. They get pissed off when somebody brings up their high prices or another brand they don't sell. Actually it's just one of the owners that has that attitude. But then he is the first to say "Wow business is slow"..... ! It may not necessarily be their choice that they have to price it like that. Some companies can be very controlling as far as pricing and sales go, especially if there are multiple dealers in the area. I know they're not car audio-related, but Apple is the most notorious for this practice. The reason behind it is some companies don't want to be perceived as a cheap, or even cheaper (which implies inferior), product relative to their competitors. As for the shop owners, oh well, as long as you enjoy your system, that's what matters. If you're buying your system to impress others, you're buying it for the wrong reason, anyways.

Have you turned UAC off ? That's usually the first thing I do when I set up a Vista machine ... Does the XP machine have all the available updates and service packs ? I don't remember doing anything special to get it to work ... I really don't know why you're having so much trouble ... FYI, I'm using 3 different versions of Vista on those machines (Business 64-bit on my main machine, Ultimate 32-bit on the laptop, and Home Premium 32-bit on the HTPC) so it shouldn't be the version that's the issue ...

    Welcome to the IHoP

Bull Shit How do you figure ? I share files between 3 Vista computers and 2 XP computers in my place and it was just as easy as it was when I had all XP computers ... My file server still runs XP and I send files to it from my main PC (Vista) and play files from it on my HTPC (Vista), Laptop (Vista), and main PC (Vista). It took no effort whatsoever ... The only computers I have in my place that I've had issues with networking are the Macs, which will seem to pick and choose the computers they see on a daily basis. They occasionally don't even see the same computers (outside of each other, which they always see). It makes no sense whatsoever ... Those are a PITA ... Maybe you're having a firewall issue ?

    Legalize It

Drinking while intoxicated is drinking while intoxicated. It doesn't matter how you got intoxicated (alcohol, marijuana, sniffing glue, taking prescription drugs, etc.) ... If you're caught, you should face the same charges as a drunk driver.I'm all for legalization of everything. I personally don't do any drugs, so I have nothing to gain as far as getting high goes, but the taxes generated from the legal sale and distribution of the desired drugs would help fund health care, education, etc. It could potentially relieve personal taxes as well. It's not so big of a problem in Canada as marijuana is already decriminalized (not to be mistaken with legalized) and our police generally either overlook or confiscate small amounts of other drugs, but in the US, this could: - save billions of dollars in enforcement, prosecution, and conviction of casual drug users - generate billions in tax revenues which can be reinvested into regulatory committees, rehabilitation programs, drug education programs, health care, education, etc. - provide users with a safer means of purchasing and using their desired drugs (don't have to purchase from potentially dangerous dealers, regulated drugs means that no unknown chemicals are mixed in and the chemicals that cause the high can be limited so as to make overdosing more difficult) as well as provide them with legal recourse for mistakes made by the drug company - eliminate/minimize the income of drug cartels and drug dealers, either forcing them to become legitimate business owners, into poverty, or into prison for other illegal activities - minimize the number of illegal immigrants entering the country who are currently used to smuggle currently-illegal drugs over the border If it's done properly, there really shouldn't be a downside.

    Firefox and Opera

Yeah, I've been using the Opera 10 Beta for a while now and it is fantastic. I especially like the new Opera TurboBoost feature when I'm doing a lot of downloading, it speeds things up considerably. Also, the fact that I don't need to edit the speeddial.ini file in order to get more Speed Dials is nice (plus it'll actually sync more than the first 9 when I go to another computer). Automatic spell check was long overdue.
  21. Vista and 7 run about the same on my Xeon 3.87 GHz Dual Core w/ 8 GB of RAM, Radeon HD 4870 except Vista is more stable. Both of them smoke XP (which is limited to 3 GB of RAM unless you run the 64-bit version); XP sucks so bad at multitasking. On an older/lower-end machine or a laptop, 7 is leaps and bounds better than Vista, for sure.I enjoy building monster PCs. My budget didn't allow last spring (I had to skimp on a lot of stuff as my GF and I were planning to buy a house, so she wanted me to save as much as possible). I'll probably build a new one next spring (it's hard to believe it will have been 2 years already) as this one is starting to show its age in some applications (i.e. Grand Theft Auto IV) plus I'll switch to Windows 7.

Newegg ... I've used them a ton since they started Newegg.ca and I've been very satisfied with their service and prices.512 MB + Vista = Brutal ... If you don't plan on overclocking, don't bother investing in high-end RAM ... Just get the basic stuff (Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, OCZ, Buffalo, Samsung, Mushkin, and Patriot are all good brands; get whatever is the cheapest).
