Then there was this:
I got a chance to chat with the owner, Larry. Great guy, came all the way from Cali. O_o
Solid install.
Great looking kick panels
My favorite part, these classic looking subs. Pro-audio style ribbed cones and accordion surrounds, just gorgeous.
Along side the Merc, also from Cali, was this cute little Cruze packing quite an SQ
wallop.
Clean interior, executed razor sharp. I've got a long ways to go before I'm at this level.
Trunk install as good. Lighting controlled via iPhone, effing cool!
Arc Audio PS-8 installed under the rear deck on a motorized panel that folds down. Brilliant!
Rare sighting of a unicorn at the show in the form of an unmolested Toyota Supra. I got to chat cars with the owner Brian, one of many Brians' at the show. I asked it how he's been able to resist the urge of modifying his Supra. His answer, "Ebay, looking at what stock Supras go for versus modded Supras. Its a no brainer." I guess this one wont go for cheap. Nice chatting.
Stock, nuff said.

Damn! It was a good show. It was awesome chatting it up with all you guys. No trophies for me. :/ I was bestowed the honorary "Rocked the fhawk out" by the Oklahoma crew. They don't call them guys OK for nothing. Thanks fellas. I did get some great tuning tips from one of the Houston Boys, Chad. Awesome dude, thanks for the tips. Well I'm gonna try to keep this thread alive by posting some pics. So here goes.
Chad's (southside) Acura out to dominate the world of SQ
Nice and clean trunk install. I didn't get a chance to listen this time around, but there is no doubt this is one nice sounding car.
I came across this sinister Tundra done up by the crew at Mobile Toys.
A modest stock appearing interior, see if you can spot all the tricks.
Great use of space. No demo of this one though. I should've asked for one, prolly would of gotten it too.
Up next was a very modest commuter car. Owner, unknown. :|
Some serious gear in the trunk.
Another subtle interior install. Must make for a fun drive to work or the gym.
I saw this at the show. Nice sombrerro muchacho.
A combination of Definitive Audio Designs (DAD) subs and Mosconi Amps. Noice!
To be continued....0 -
forgot that all of the pole pieces have to be drilled and tapped..oops
No wonder my subs suffer from a little voice coil rub.
POAST!

holly crap dude... i was hoping you were going to be out at american sounds on june 1st for the usaci show but you no show
:/ Dang, I thought that show was on the 8th so I really didn't pay attention to it since I'm going to the IASCA show in college station on the 8th. If I would have know it was on the 1st I would have at least shown up in the creampuff. Sorry man Lately my focus hasn't been on car audio, I've been having some other things going on that I'm hoping on working through for the best. Keep me posted on anything coming up. I will be at heat wave in austin fo sho.
nice update sir. Initial thoughts on the change?
Off the bat they weren't as bright as the drivers that came with the horns. They EQed easier, not requiring as much EQ I mean. I've still have lots to learn though. I'm still at grasshopper level.
Very nice updates!
Thanks.
What do you think of the new compression drivers? What is your high pass setting for those?
I like them. For now it's just a high pass at 900Hz with a 24dB/oct slope.
Keeping it clean as usual! I might have to pick your brain as far as ib setups go, if you have time.
Thanks. No problem ask away.

Sorry for you loss. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and you family during this difficult moment.

Wow, time flies when you're not in jail. I don't know how some of you guys do it, posting day in and day out with build updates and advice. Well I'm back with a little update of my own.
I opted to replace the compression drivers with something a little more robust. Here is what I got.
Here is a little side by side of the original driver next to it's replacement.
The Dayton driver is a little more substantial but nothing like what I use in my home stereo rig.
One more shot, now of the business end.
Here is a shot of all three.
With a larger compression driver, I had to update the rear mounting bracket. Here is the horn assembly with the new rear bracket.
Before I get into the re-installation of the horn assemblies, I opted, after hearing many suggestions, to update the mounting hardware.
This is what I started off with.
Here is my painting rig with homedepot's finest 97cent rattle can paint.
After a couple of layers and a once over with a heat gun this is what I ended up with.
Here is the final product.
Lastly, a shot of the underside.
Fingers crossed, hope it sounds good. LOL!

Damn. I just seen about the senior community center van wreck on the news last week. Nuts man. The video of the van they show was when it was being up righted, just as it tipped back on all fours. Was that you manning the wrecker that up righted it?
Bummer bout the douche PMing you, what an idiot.
Stay safe.

lol i think its a nice crazy!
did the SemDEZ break your windsheild?
No, I'm not that loud. :/ It actually happened driving to El Paso two Thanksgivings ago. There was a hard freeze in between Ft Stockton and Van Horn. The windshield started icing over, so I turned on the defrost full tilt. All of a sudden I saw this crack creeping along the windshield. It was nerve racking.

Very nice!
Thanks.
sweet im off next weekend... you have SOOO much stuff hugo its CRAZY
That'll work. We'll stay in contact. As for the second half of your comment, it's a condition I'm working on. I think they even have a pill for it.
Thanks Rick. If you knew how long I had these horns and how long it really took me to get them installed, I'd probably be getting a slap upside the head and a " 'bout damn time" comment.
I've done that before...
Well, the first step is admitting the problem.

oh i cant wait to hear this.... and hugo i need to talk to you about getting one of those MS8s off you if you are willing to part
Thanks Jon. Let's see when we can meet up and play. I'm sure we can work something out.
Looking good! I'm liking the new toys!
Thanks Rick. If you knew how long I had these horns and how long it really took me to get them installed, I'd probably be getting a slap upside the head and a " 'bout damn time" comment.

niiiiiiiiiiiice!!!! Looking good brother! Can't wait to hear your thoughts on them!
Thanks! My car audio sq tuning skillz leave a lot to be desired. :/ I'll keep you posted on whether I can make these sound as good as they look installed.

The driver's side install included the removal of the parking brake assembly. Here is the bracket in place.
Here is a close up of the transition from the horn mouth to the underside of the dash.
With the mounting of the horn bodies situated, I look into hot rodding the horn bodies themselves for added performance. How about a little port and polish job? Here I round over the short side for smoother transition.
On the long side I knocked down some of the flashing and high spots.
Here is a look in from the horn mouth. :/
In addition to my port and polish job I added a little sound deadener to the outside of the horn bodied just to make sure they're dead. Muahahaha! Here is the start of the process.
I opted to do a one piece wrap for the top and a one piece wrap for the bottom half, with a seam on the side walls. To keep the seams together and from rolling up I used some HVAC tape along the seams. Here is looking at the top side of the horn.
Here is a look at the bottom side of the horn.
Lastly here is a pic of the horns read for their final install.
Here is a shot of the horns in place, brackets painted.
Disregard the tweeters in the a-pillars, they are going away as soon as I buy some replacement a-pillar panels. While you are at it, disregard that MS8 display panel as it is being replaced by this.0 -
Ever since I got into car audio, I had it in my head, that the pinnacle of SQ was running
underdash horns. I was young and naive. Regardless, over the years I would tell myself that
one day I would run some underdash horns. Well, that day has come, and here is the proof.
I stuck with an original:
20install/01_zpsa4e2d833.jpg.html'>
Showing off like a proud papa.
A pic of the ride they will be calling home.
I started off by mocking up the passenger side horn. To get the horn tucked up nice and high,
I cut off these bosses on the HVAC blower housing.
From there I was able to whip up a bracket in CAD and have it cut out.
With the horn bracket in place I transferred the mounting hole locations onto the horn body
and get it in place. With the front side good to go, I look towards the compression driver end of the horn to add
some support. I opted to make an "L" bracket out of the supplied straps. Here I use a square
scrap of mdf as a gage to figure the short leg length of the bracket.
To ensure that the bracket is properly oriented, I scribed the outline of it in it's
installed position.
On the kick panel I attached a riv-nut, simplifying removal and re-installation of the horn
body.
Here is the passenger side horn in it's new home.

So the Fo of the sub free air came out to be almost the same as in the box?
Yes.
My apologies on that last graph, the ohm scale did not match the previously posted graph.

Because it is in a vehicle. You will always have losses that will affect Q. It's never gonna be the same.
My first suggestion was going to be to pull it out of the car and remeasure.
I did measure with the box on floor, with the woofer cone pointing up. The impedance curve was almost identical. This is what I got.

Because it is in a vehicle. You will always have losses that will affect Q. It's never gonna be the same.
Is it maxed out or is there more to be had?

The new box sounds great, I like it. I did hook up the ol' DATS to the box in vehicle and this is what I got:
:/ From what I understand, an impedance curve like this represents a sealed box with a leak. Looks like I'm back to the drawing board looking for more port area to realize my theoretical 3dBs by going ported.
I'm bummed that my Hornresp predicted impedance curve didn't match up to my DATS measured impedance curve. Anybody got any thoughts regarding that? On a side note the modeled tuning nearly match the measured tuning.
I did give the new box a run on the SPL Labs LCD Bass Meter. This is what I got:
Not bad for a single ten under 1000watts in a trunk car, but if there is more to be had, I want it.

Came out great!
You didn't want to play with positioning before bolting it down?
Thanks. As for box position, I figure I'd just drop the silly thing in and take my chance with hitting a home run right out of the chute. Most likely that isn't gonna happen.
Also kinda hard to tell in the pic, but from the orientation it looks like the port is fairly close to the side.
That being the case don't be surprised if the dats shows lower than calculated tuning.
Don't forget to use the calibration resistor each time you fire it up!
The pis make the port look close both there is a good four inches of clearance. The DATS will tell the truth though.
that would be the only way i would do a side port.. i like mines to load off of something,
came out great hugo im glad to see you left the IB baffle
you need to get that bad ass moteCarlo finished that Q would be at home in that clean sex sumbitch
The ib baffle stayed in jus because Im lazy. : D
Awe, don't tell me about that Monte Carlo. It's a love hate relationship with that damn car. I tell you it gonna be the end of me if I ever finish it.

Yay! Day off updates!
So here are some pics of the last iteration of the system in my little Olds. A.K.A. "The Creampuff"
What a mess.
And what was hiding behind the rear seat.
With everything out I positioned the box in place and decided on using an angle iron to secure the box to the car. I started off by installing some 1/4-20 rivenuts in the trunk floor.
Here is the angle iron bolted down.
Looking through the old baffle
I transferred the hole locations from the angle iron on to the box. I followed up by installing threaded wood insert into the box allowing me to bolt the box onto the angle iron with three 1/4-20 x 1" bolts. Here is some shots of the box bolted to the angle iron.
Lastly here is a pic of the final install.
The final system layout consist of:
Headunit: JVC KD-HDW10
Processor: JBL MS-8
Front Stage: PowerBass S-352 3-1/2" Co-Ax in stock location powered by MS-8 hi-passed at 200Hz 24dB/oct
Peerless OEM 8" powered by US Acoustics USB-4080 (bridged) band-passed 200Hz 24dB/oct & 80Hz 12dB/oct
Sub Stage: Fi Q 10 powered by Bazooka MGA11000H lo-passed at 80Hz 12dB/oct sub-sonic at 30Hz 24dB/oct
Test and impressions on the way.

lol... I want to feel manly too....
Sounds like someone needs a hug.

box looks great... how did you like that plywood man???
I like it. It's got less voids in it than the oak/wanna be birch ply they sell at homedepot. It's lighter than MDF. Most importantly, when I cut it I get the feeling that I'm breathing in real wood not all sorts of carcinogens like when cutting mdf. Makes me feel like a lumberjack.

Mobile Toys IASCA SQ Show 2013 PICS!

Making the rounds at the show I came across James's beautiful blue GTO
A little American muscle for all the enthusiast.
Simple pods in the pillars for this Goat. On a side note how's everyone enjoying my JJ Abrams visual light effects. They were ultra annoying in TV show Fringe.JJ, if you're reading, cut it out. Back to the GTO
Handling the bottom octaves, a pair of AQ SD2.5s in a very clean DIY install.
Next to the Goat I found papaqueball's red Charger.
A 15" Alpine in an IB alignment works it's magic in the Charger.
Lookie, who came out to play.
Wicked sounding engine.
It's even got on board entertainment for the little ones. Not sure how well it works when it's tearing up the track at 160mph. Kids must be holding on to those controller for dear life, is my guess.
A very off road capable Jeep belonging to one of the installers at Mobile Toys was also on display.
Cool little tweeter dash pods with mids in the stock location for this Jeep.
Killer box with some Mosconi amps.
