So I noticed that the Altima was sitting out in back of the shop and I decided to go try to reset the computer. I popped the hood to find this, wtf!? There were nuts and bolts laying all throughout the engine bay, there were several different spark plugs laying around. It's in pieces.

Any ideas as to what these idiots did? It is sitting in the parking lot like this...

Rick I just noticed you are in Tucson. My step brother has his own shop there and a flatbed tow truck to boot. He is very competent and takes pride in his work. He is a rat rodder but is just as good on foreign's also as he did the timing belt in my daughters Lexus RX300 last time he was up. parts and labor. He had it done in less than 4 hrs.

He owe's me a favor as I hooked him up with my JD2 tube bender and notcher. I will call him once the sun come's up and see if he is available.

And no I wouldn't give a 17 year old a Lexus but my oldest doesn't live with me, and thats what the other half insisted on. fyi

I just got off the phone with my step bro. He had been up all night doing repo's. lol

Anyways he is up in Phoenix atm. He referred another gentleman that is VERY competent. The guy is an engine builder and is VERY knowledgeable on electronics. Give him a call and he probably can get it figured out for you.

The guys name is Ray. his # 520-790-0579

Tell him Andy Speer refered you to him. Good luck.

BTW whats the name of the shop the car is at now? I would ask them to re install everything and get it out of there.

Thank you again for your help. I called this morning and told them to put it back together. Just to see their response I asked if they checked the injectors he responded "yes the injectors are pulsing, there is no compression in the engine that is why we condemned it" I will give him a call and see what he says I really appreciate it.

It is at jack furriers nw location.

If it is just the cap then it isn't that big of a deal. Real question is what and why.

So it isn't as much of a mess as it would appear to a car "idiot" (me)?

No, could be 5 min worth of unwork

Thank you! I don't know what I would do without you guys. I'm just at the point where I'm going to get a damn bus pass. I need to start learning how to work on cars.

Damn, that sucks why did you have to take the Altima to a shop?

Long story short it felt weird so we took it in for a tune up and here we are....

SETH I just searched for a quote from you so that you would see this! So I took my mothers 2.5 2003 Nissan Altima (100k miles) in because it was idling rough and would "chug" while driving. They had it for 3 days and could not get it to replicate the problem. I said fine forget it as my Mom had already bought a new car and she was just going to cut her losses and she was going to sell it. I couldn't pick it up that day and the next day I get a call that they tried to back it out of the garage and it "blew up" it made a loud sound and now it won't start. They said that the 3rd cylinder had low pressure and they didn't want to dig any deeper without permission. They said that it may have "jumped the timing chain" and that it could be an easy fix or that "the engine might need to be replaced". This car has been meticulously maintained by these idiots but I just have a hard time believing that this engine is truly done. Is there anything that you can suggest without having your hands on it? This place seems to be incompetent but they are not trying to charge to fix anything so I do not know what to make of the situation. If you can suggest anything I'd appreciate it. We are basically looking for the best way to get rid of it financially.
Basically if it were your car and you couldn't work on it yourself what would you do? We had an offer of $750 for it but it has $500 dollars worth of brand new rubber on it, and the kbb value is about 4.5k in poor condition. Should we attempt to repair and sell it, or should we just sell it as a "mechanics special"? If we try to sell it what should we expect? I completely understand if you can't give a definitive answer, I'm just looking for a ballpark.

I'd get the issue looked into by a competent mechanic before selling it. It is doubtful that it is a mechanical issue, by the sounds of things. On a Nissan I would be more inclined to believe an injector failure. Odds are they tried throwing coils and plugs on it and it didn't work. Nissans are notorious for injector issues.

I agree with Seth that is more likely something non mechanical, like an injector or bad sensor somewhere sending faulty signals to the ECM. Lazy mechanics don't want anything to do with electrical gremlins. I have repaired and sold many electric gremlin cars that I got for free.  Have you retrieved any code's from the ECM? Try resetting the ECM and see if it has any effect. When an ECM is reset it will run in limp (default) mode for X amount of mile's (usaully around 50mi) until the ECM has collected enough data to recalibrate. To reset the ECM disconnect the battery cables and hold the cable ends together. This will discharge any power stored in the ECM and clear all collected data. Make sure to retrieve any codes before discharging. Some code's are false in the sense that they point you in the right direction, but not always the actual sensor.

My mother insisted that I should offer you guys something. You both helped us a lot with the Altima and Seth my Mom said that you made it easier for her to sleep tonight knowing that it is probably something simple with the bmw and that alone made me so happy that you responded. If you guys have a favorite place to eat let me know as she and I would like to buy you guys dinner. Thanks again fellas!

Honestly that heartfelt thanks is more than enough payment. Tell her I said thanks.

Tell her to donate my cut to a charity of her choice or use it to make a difference in a kid's life.

You guys are both awesome. I will donate 50 dollars to St. Judes and my Mom will also donate 50. Thank you both for your help.

Seth I was able to reset the sensor by doing some goofy ass steering wheel dance in an empty parking lot, thanks again! I would have never known what to search for had you not said anything.

  7. I checked this thread out the other day. Guess I forgot to leave a comment.

Love the ride! that thing is fly as a motherfucka'.

I say try the Bose out and see what you think. May just need to add a sub for a little warm and presence.

Thanks man! I thought that it was a done deal days ago and then they hit me with some crazy financing offer. I have great credit so opted to look elsewhere for financing and got exactly what I was expecting. If all goes well I'll sign for the car tomorrow. If not I found a pretty sweet hemi 300, but I really want this M.

  9. The dealer is dicking me around, so I might start looking elsewhere. I REALLY don't want to as this car is a perfect fit for me right now, but the I30 is in need of a far too many things at the moment to worry about so I need to get into something newer asap. I am hoping that this works out.

  10. I see I am not the only on with insomnia. lol haha

Yeah I'm always up haha. I think I sleep about 4 hours per day on average. Work, school, and SSA time take up the other 20 hours. I'm hoping that things calm down soon lol.

Tattoo'ing an actual cat next Thursday. Can say I haven't done that before.

Tattoo of a cat on a person, or are you tatting up a cat lol?

An actual cat. I have to set up at the vet's clinic and they sedate the animal. Have done other animail's, just not a cat.

Really!? I thought that I already knew the answer to my question haha. That's crazy.

  12. Congrats.

And before you go down any route you need to know what kind of Bose implementation it is. Typically they either do all processing in the amp or the h/u. I know duh, huh? If it is in the amp you are set at easy as all you'll need is a proc. If it is the other way you will either need a cleansweep (or similar) and to replace everything after the amp.

GM for instance uses what they call a Lux Bose and a non-Lux. Inconveniently for me the Esky includes the Lux which has the processing in the headunit. The non-Lux actually has over 8v outs and is dead flat at the amp allowing for SUPER easy audio integrations.

    Nice car btw.

Thanks Sean that is exactly what I wanted to know.

Just to add to the car drama my Mom calls me today saying her "new" car is giving her a "dynamic drive malfunction" error. The car is a 2010 535i with ~29,000 miles. I went over to check the idrive because she doesn't know how to use it and it is saying something like increased body roll avoid high speed cornering? I've searched and can't really find anything relevant aside from one thread on a 7 series forum. Any ideas? I'm taking the car to BMW Saturday I guess. I drove it around a bit and it feels fine.

Likely a simple steering angle sensor recalibration is all that is needed. I see it a lot on BMWs after a battery replacement.

Too bad you don't live closer. I would flash it for you in under 5 minutes.

Oh how I hope your right. The battery was replaced about 300-500 miles ago when she bought it. Thank you for at least giving me an idea.
