  1. Looking forward to what you got planned sir!! Building the enclosure with your boy will be an experience, mine has helped with a few, lol. My next build is for him, a 12" ICON, a HiFonics Nemisis 750d (because I already have it) and a 1/0 wiring kit pulled from my truck. He's going to do alot of the work, lol.

Btw, if you go 1500wrms, you'd better go 1/0g. While 4g might be sufficient, why risk it? 1000wrms is about the limit for a 4g kit.

    Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :slayer:

  2. As mentioned above, the enclosure will be the most important part of this project, don't skimp here!

With $300 as a budget for subs, a 15" driver makes a lot of sense. With more cone area, and most likely more xmax then a pair of compareable 10s, the output potential is greater. With the right enclosure/sub, the SQ potential is also there.

Amplifier should be of a quality brand, and in the neighborhood of 1000-1500wrms, for a stock electrical system. Here's a great combo from the SSA online store, ICON 15" with Sundown 1000d , with a price tag of $579, it barely tops your sub budget.

Wiring can be done from the local welding shop, or an online one. A package wiring kit can be had cheaply as well, if one looks. I'd recommend 1/0g as a minimum due to the fact that eventually, the boy will want to upgrade. If you install the bigger wire first, that is something that can be in place for future installs/upgrades and won't need to be touched. I'd also suggest a Optima yellow top, or compareable battery, installed up front. Avoid the red top, it's for starting only and isn't deep cycle. Streetwires 1/0 kit for $118. Figure that much for any wire, welding or otherwise by the time you had fuses and such. They kind be had cheaper, be wary of strand count. The higher, the better, IMO. A battery, while not needed, will run about $150 or so.

Back to the enclosure, will you build this yourself or have built? A quality enclosure will run in the $150 range or so to have built. We have good builders here that know the ICON very well. The downside to a 15 vs a pair of 10s is the enclosure size. The 15" enclosure will most likely be bigger, but again, output potential is greater.

Don't forget some deadning. Figure a couple of hundred bucks for a good kit, or so. Otherwise, rattle city!! The ICON will tear that truck apart, lol

Sum it all up, with the combo posted above, a wiring kit, and an enclosure, $800-1000 is what you are looking at. Build the box yourself, save some coin. Add some frills, like battery and deadner, have the enclosure built, the tag goes up. Hopefully I've helped some and not just rambled on! I'm known for doing that, or was....hehe

  3. took my new 'maro to 146mph...then it shifted into 6th and slowed down. will dry while in manual mode..maybe see 150?

Kent, take the easy way and get some boost. I guarantee you'll be hooked instantly. . . . . . . And it's just so damn easy.

am thinking boost later on. a nice turbo setup, tune and possibly cams. then again, maybe just a quickie 100 shot? i think the 3.6 is strong enough to handle it.

  4. and it's not about subs, it's about sound amplification system. which is any stereo in the car. yes, i can write you for having your factory stereo up loud enough to be heard 75ft away. and playing dumb to get out of it? lol, you can try. and yes, i'll be in court with you, why wouldn't i be? it's overtime! in a nutshell, and this may not necessarly apply to all states, but when it comes to a petty offense, the officer's word is golden. and it'll typically cost you more in lawyer's fees to beat the ticket then to just pay the ticket.

it also depends on what statute i write you on...city? minimum of $250 fine and mandatory court appearance. state? $50 fine and you're done. it's typically written on the state statute as there is far less paperwork, lol.

    (625 ILCS 5/12‑611) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12‑611)

Sec. 12‑611. No driver of any motor vehicle within this State shall operate or permit operation of any sound amplification system which can be heard outside the vehicle from 75 or more feet when the vehicle is being operated upon a highway, unless such system is being operated to request assistance or warn of a hazardous situation.

This Section does not apply to authorized emergency vehicles.

Any violation of the provisions of this Section shall be a petty offense punishable by a fine not to exceed $50.

see anything in there about subwoofers only? nope, me either.

  5. got a guy with an escort, one with big red arrows, today! 87 in a 65, lol....even called out his detector. he laughed, said it was outdated. could be, but then again, if it isn't on until i hit your car, it doesn't matter how much you paid for that detector, you ain't picking up my radar. and if i have the LIDAR gun? forget about it. i've hit cars at a 1/4 mile away and locked them in.

just an opinion...from the thin blue side.

    wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :slayer:

  6. i love writing citations to those with high end detectors, lol....not saying they don't work, but i've written just as many with detectors as compared to those without.

that said...is rocky mountain radar still in business? it's phantoms and phazers, IIRC were what they were called, are passive jammers, which means they aren't illegal. i'll have to google and see. should be a better option then just a detector.

btw, no experience with the above two mentioned detectors other then writing those who have had them. (the one with the arrows anyway.)

  7. any vehicle will be louder with something open, as opposed to closed, save maybe those extreme vehicles designed from the onset as strictly spl machines. which door/window or combo of is louder will be determined by box placement/port placement and testing. typically, and this isn't no concrete rule, but the door/ window opposite of the port when opened will increase score. also, play with mic placement. if you can open a door, sometimes you can place the mic on a floorboard.

one of the oldest tricks in a legal setup, ie db drag, is to figure out how to have something look sealed up when in fact it's "open". a "leaky" sunroof for example....lol...

  8. i've had experience installing the kicker cvt's, the clarion version and the pioneer. the pioneer is the worst of the bunch in my experience. just flat hated installing those subs. the clarion shallow subs are good subs, and with 300wrms a piece, would be a good option. i can't remember the model number, or know if they even make them anymore. i've been out of car audio for awhile. my favorite? the kickers! they kicked ass for shallow subs. i even ran 4 of them, 10" version, in my silverado for awhile. loud and low, and in a sealed box, i ran mine ported, they are very responsive. that would be my choice.

of course, it's been 2 years since i've played with any..so take my opinion for what it is, lol...

    wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :slayer:

Great! thanks for your feedback on those! I wonder if the pioneers are better now? the 1201's are the latest generation of them. What didn't you like? Just the install or also the sound?

I'll definitely check out the Kickers!

the pioneers just didn't do anything...loud, nope. low, nope. sound good, kinda. same install, the clarions and kickers walked all over the pioneers in every way.

iirc, the kickers did have a deeper mounting depth, but i think well within what you are after.

yes, it's been that long, lol

  10. I really don’t give a flying fuck about what other people think. If they don’t like it they can drive faster. I do play my system loud all the time, and turn it up at stop lights. Just to piss people off. Yes i have massive trunk rattle and well everything rattles. I can’t hear it, do you think i car if you can? I’ve had people flip me off, get out and yell at me (I love that get to yell back), call cops; pull over to the side of the road. Whatever they do, i always get a laugh out of it, and it brightens my day. Yes i am an arseho but i don’t really give a shit anymore. I have nothing to lose and life just sucks. What ever i can get enjoyment out of i take every advantage of it. That’s my system i love bass and a lot of it.

To add I put this though spell check and grammar check to make sure everything is right. So at least you can’t bitch that my grammar and spelling is off. All you can bitch about is my rant. lol

maybe he'll read this when he get's back....

but roll through my town like that? not only will you be going to court, minimum $250 fine if i write it on the city ordinance, i'm towing the car and yanking subs to inventory the POS. gotta make sure there isn't anything hidden in the sub box. and hopefully you'll get mouthy with me, then things get fun!

sad truth? and you can ask ///M5 to verify this, i'm a basshead. but i have respect, and i guarantee i've built/owned louder then most. and i work in a town that is pure hood, research cairo,il and find out. for all the hood, there isn't much rattle, lol. not much at all!!

  11. i've personally ran an 18 solo x off 4kw daily for over a year, never any issues. and sq? compared to the other drivers in it's catagory, the s18x, or any solo x, is actually the better sounding driver. ask any number of competitors who have used the solo x to win sq comps, of course, they were there for the really low notes, and far better drivers took care of the hard stuff.

9 cubes is a bit big for daily, IMO, especially with 6kw. like someone has previously mentioned, a solo x will do fine in a smaller small with little to no percieved output loss. IIRC, my daily box was 5.5^3 tuned 35ish, i'll have to look it up.

btw, one of my favortie setups of all time was a 10" solo x off 2.5kw in my xcab silverado. 2.5^3 net box tuned 32-36hz (can't remember), most people thought i had a 15 or more. and it played music just fine. and lastly, if the s18x is free, beat it till it falls apart. if not, send it to me, i'll gladly pay shipping for a free s18x, lmao

  12. ok..it's a crappy question, and the answer is......

all else being equal that pair of DD 15s should, and i mean should, beat pair of 12s. but it's mostly, if not completely, install dependant...as has been preached over and over.

  13. ill do the best i can to explain. my buddy just got some memphis subs the mclass 12s he has about 400 watts going to each the day after he got them one started smoking and then quit it still works but makes a clicking noise i took it out and took a look at it but didnt see anything wrong does anyone know what this could be?

mclass subs aren't designed for 400wrms daily. although in the proper enclosure, with gains set right, they might live for awhie. my guess is they were overdriven to the point of failure. that sub making noise is toast. smoking coil isn't a good thing.

    time for stronger subs.

  14. fishing? what's that? lmao...i have several poles in the garage, not a single one of them has seen water in at least 5 years. no urge to go either...

  16. is the mtx a 2ohm stable amp? i'm assuming it is, and hopefully you have a d4 rl-p...if you do, it's straightforward to hook it up. but we need to know those items....

    yeah, too lazy to search.

i loved my rl-p in 1.25ft^3 net sealed. was plenty loud too, used a hifonics nemesis 750d to push it. it does come alive ported though, and i liked a 1.75-2ft^3 net box, tuned to 32-34hz, 32in^2 of port. loud, low and clean. the rl-p will please.
