  1. I have had an old SX laying around for a couple years and finally sold it (with box and amp) to my brother for $200. He was getting it installed today and the guy installing it said one of the VC was reading 0 ohm.

I havent been involved with car audio for probably 10years and forgot what little I used to know. Can I fix this or is it now a paperweight?

Maybe I am hanging onto nostalgia, but IIRC Resonant Engineering was respected for quality and value before the buyout by US Amps when prices shot up.

Furthermore IIRC, the owner of RE went on to found FI car audio, so perhaps they would be the ones to ask?

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

  2. How is the SX not cutting it? Is it just not loud enough? What amp do you have on it?

Well in my old car (1991 oldsmobile cutlass, stock alt, no big 3) it wasn't loud enough. My friend threw my 15 and my US acoustics 800watt amp in his car and it's at least 35% louder if not more. The amp is a POS though, I won't get into that though.

I will have to get you guys the measurements after work today. Just to throw a bit more in the mix, could I get away with 2 15's if I had something like the IA 187's? or as jay-cee said, stick with 2-12's or one fifteen?

First off, you have a quality woofer. Put that in a properly designed ported enclosure to fit your vehicle and it should be more than enough. Do the big 3 to add to your stock electrical. Use a minimum of 4 gauge wire. Your amp is a well designed amp by a very reputable and well known engineer. Keep it! We can always suggest other products too. :drink40:

Btw, is your woofer dual 2 ohm or 4 ohm?

Dual 2ohm. I agree the amp is well built and handmade in the USA I believe, but something is wrong with it. It blows fuses often and when it does it blows 3 out of 4. The particular forth one that remains is always the same fuse, I have yet to blow that one. I am assuming there is a small electrical problem inside but I am not one to know how to fix it.

  4. Okay I have a new(to me) car, a 2001 saturn ls200. I want to get a system going but my 1 15RE SX isn't quite cutting it. So, should I get 1 18 or 2 15's. Either way, I'm leaning toward elemental designs 15/18 or FI SSD or Q for 15/18. I know it'll be a bit biased here but please be as objective as possible :D

    Thanks

EDIT. BTW I though about 2-18's but I don't think I have the volume of a trunk I need.

  6. Don't go by what KBB tells you the trunk is unless you plan on fiberglassing an enclosure to fit every nook and cranny.

You'll need to go measure and see what size of a box you can realistically fit in there.

I have an identical car and I was able to... squeeze I think 3.5-3.7 in there.

  7. I suggested the RE SE's or the FI SSD's and possibly a Soundstream or Orion amp?

I am a fan of RE and if my memory serves me - Fi was started by a OWNER of RE (Scott)

u would like the Sundown SAE-1200D + 2x Fi SSD 15 or 2xRE SR 15 or 2x IA Lethal Injection ...that in my opinion would blend together and its in his price range... :fing34:

Thanks! I was actually looking at that sundown amp - where could I get some prices on those or the IA?

*EDIT* I found the prices :D

  8. You're thinking of Scott, but close enough.

How about outlining what your brother listens too, and how much space he has available.

Looks like your total budget is around $750.

    Scott - okay, thanks!

Well he mostly listens to heavy rock like All That Remains, Disturbed, Machine Head, but also sometimes some bump music and even Led Zep to John Denver. But to help you, lets stick with the Heavy rock/rap.

According to Kelley Blue Book his trunk has 16.2 ft^2 (1992 buick century)

Also looking for a 9833 alpine faceplate (it was stolen from me) so he can have my old CD player :)

    Thanks!

  9. Hey guys, I am new to this forum. Been out of the car audio scene for quite awhile (i don't know what happened to elitecaraudio.com????). Anyway!

My bro is looking around spending 180-220 per 15 (total of 2) and a decent amp (oh 200-300 maybe)

I suggested the RE SE's or the FI SSD's and possibly a Soundstream or Orion amp?

I am a fan of RE and if my memory serves me - Fi was started by a former worker of RE (steve?)

Well thanks for your time and help!
