  1. No. Ported just has too big of an advantage in the 30-50 hz range (if its tuned in the low 30s like most are for musical listening). A larger sealed box will have better lows than a smaller sealed box, however. Ported is white, large sealed is pink, small sealed is yellow. You can see that the larger sealed enclosure has a bit of an advantage than the small, but the ported completely trumps both until you get below 20 hz. Below 20 hz is the area where people say a sealed box can play lower. Unfortunately, 98% of music does not go that low, so it's useless in a real application.
  2. I finally hooked everything up in my suburban and it sounds even better than I thought it would. I have a 18" Xcon tuned to 35 hz. I have it hooked up to a JBL 1200.1 II and it is plenty of power for me. As far as music reproduction the Xcon is the best I have ever heard. I've played every type of music and it sounds ridiculously good on everything. When i turn up it literally feels like its hitting you in the chest. Its starts getting hard to breath on certain songs. lol. Props go out to SSA for making a Top knotch woofer!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When i get the wires and stuff cleaned up I'll put up some pics and maybe a video. Just a break down on what else Im running with it. Alpine 9855 deck. mli-6.5 with vifa tweeters. Running active on a US acoustics USX-4065
  3. First impression: The Arc Audio 4050XXK and 2050XXK are quite beautiful amplifiers, although the pictures cannot pick it up. The heatsink fins are machined aluminum, but they have an almost chrome shine to them. The amps have a nice solid feel with the exception of the bottom plate, which is an access panel to the internal workings of the amplifier. As far as the connectors go, the rca inputs are very high quality and have a nice solid feel to them when plugging in male rca connectors. I was surprised to see screw terminals on such a well built amplifier. They work ok for a lower power amp like this, but I would only hope that the larger XXK amplifiers would have either larger screws for power, or the straight wire connectors like most modern amplifiers come with. Specs: Arc Audio 2050XXK Stereo @ 4 ohms: 2 x 50 watts Stero @ 2 ohms: 2 x 95 watts Bridged @ 4 ohms: 1 x 190 watts THD %: <.05% Freq Response: 20 Hx - 20 KHz Signal to Noise Ratio: 100db Seperation: >75db Transient Dist.: <.01 Input Sensitivity: 250 mv - 2.5 v Bass Boost +18 db @ 45Hz Crossover (Butterworth): 55Hz – 5.5kHz 12db stereo Max Current Draw: 28 amps Damping Factor: >300 @ 1Khz Dimensions: 8.75 x 8 x 3.35 Arc Audio 4050XXK Stereo @ 4 ohms: 4 x 50 watts Stero @ 2 ohms: 4 x 90 watts Bridged @ 4 ohms: 2 x 180 watts THD %: <.07% Freq Response: 20 Hx - 20 KHz Signal to Noise Ratio: 95db Seperation: >65db Transient Dist.: <.01 Input Sensitivity: 250 mv - 2.5 v Bass Boost +18 db @ 45Hz Crossover (Butterworth): 55Hz – 5.5kHz 12db stereo Max Current Draw: 46 amps Damping Factor: >300 @ 1Khz Dimensions: 13 x 8 x 3.35 For the first test I hooked up the Arc 4050XXK to the front 6.5” MBQuart Components, and the rear MBQuart 6x8’s. The 2050XXK was hooked up to the 12 Fi sub bridged at 4 ohms. Once this was done, I started adjusting the settings on the amplifiers. Even from the back of the vehicle with only the radio on, I could pick out instruments and sounds in the music that had not been as pronounced in the reference amplifier. Once all the gains and crossover points were set, I put all equializtion at 0db and turned the bass boost on each amp to the 0 position. I put in some familiar cds just to see if I could pick out things that I hadn't heard since my Zapco amplifiers. I immediatley noticed that some of the reverb from the vocals were more pronounced and natural sounding. Things like the snapping of fingers and the breathing in between vocals all became pronounced and audible. The tamborines, which are heard in the background became more a part of the music. Both amps played with very good power and authority for being only 50 watts per channel. Once pushed beyond their capabilities, I noticed an immeditate drop in sound quality, so it is very easy to know when you're exceeding the limits of the amplifiers. For the next test I hooked up the 4050XXK and left out the 2050XXK. I wanted to see how flexible this amplifier really is. I drove the four door speakers at 2 ohms, with the front outputs and the sub bridged off the rear outputs at 4 ohms. This test was very predictable, but I wanted to prove it to myself anyway. The sub had no change in output or clarity between the 2050XXK and using the rear out of the 4050XXK. The four door speakers sounded every bit as good as they did when at 4 ohms, however couldn't get quite as loud as before without becoming audibly edgy. Conclusion: The Arc is quite powerful and seems to put out more than what the rated power says. The power coming from this amplifier would probably satisfy most daily drivers, and no doubt would make even the most critcal ear happy. However, if you're looking for amp that you really want to crank up, I would suggest the next more powerful xxk. Bruce n2caraudio.com
  4. why not lay a sub face down on a piece of cardboard, then stick a marker, pen, pencil or something through the mounting holes to the cardboard to mark the holes, then go around the outside of it for the outsie cut out.....
  5. Your hearing doesn't go that low either. If the recording does have content down there you feel it rather than hear it. Sealed can handle this but it takes a lot of excursion and cone area to make it happen. The size of a sealed enclosure affects the system Q which is a description of the shape of the impedance curve but also describes the response to some degree. A lower Q system (bigger box) typically has smoother response and better low freq output but they suffer in the power handling department. IB systems usually end up in the low Q category. Higher Q roll off more steeply and sooner and can mechanically handle more power thanks to the higher box damping.
  6. I bought a 15" Xcon about 1 year ago this month... it still sounds as good as when it was new... and i still love it... it was shipped to me just as they said it would be and they answered all my qustions super fast... i bought the Boss amp they have the sale going on now.. waiting on it to get here, but i am not worried at all about it getting here after dealing with SSA before.. if they say they will do it.. They will ...... they have the best customer service i have seen.. and.. what a bunch super nice guys to deal with.... Thanks SSA !
  7. The steering shaft should work now, hated to beat up these headers , its just how it is. By grasshoper at 2010-10-10 Had to trim back the slip sleeve on the shaft, and round down the inner shaft with a grinder By grasshoper at 2010-10-10

  9. You're worrying about something that you really don't have a lot of control over and is completely normal. Trying to eliminate impedance rise is like trying to keep from being affected by gravity. Physics being what they are make both impossible. The more power you run, the worse you'll make it in a daily driver.
  10. ok gotcha that makes more sense haha i like how it looks now. perty sickk I think ssa is still waiting on the flat style dustcaps for the 10" drivers, so you could get the regular dustcap type now or wait until the new ones are in stock. I think.
  11. The 2010 version has the new dustcap, an upgraded suspension, and an optional flatwound aluminum coil.
  12. Yea that's another option, and it's specs are very similar to the fi q hmm... but when it says it can be put in a 1cu.ft. and then a 1.35 cu. ft. opt. it just means that's the measurement it performs best in? It'll perform fine in 1cube but it'll sound more linear (less peaky) and have more output with 1.35cubes. will the .35cube difference be noticeable to the ear? All I know is you can't go wrong with an icon.
  13. an SSA icon! I had the chance to run them for a few months and they sounded awesome. Ported: 1.35 cu.ft. for a 10" It would match up nicely with your amp
  14. The systems I laugh the most at are the ones with expensive gear that don't sound very good. Lots of installs with a ton of JL can get out done by the Pyramid/Autobahn that you were laughing at. A good install ALWAYS trumps good equipment in a shitty install.
  15. I would run the mids on the front two channels and the tweeters on the rear two channels and go from there. Mids crossed around 80hz on high pass filter (lower or higher depending if they can take it or not or where you want them). Tweeters crossed around 2,600-3,000hz on up on high pass filter, sometimes with lower power levels you can cross a smidgen lower but it really depends. I would see what the company had them crossed at on the passive crossover that came with it and start in that region. Hope that helps.
