  1. Do you have to use an amp? No, it's not required. But if nothing else, I'd try to talk them into atleast a small 50w x 2 amp for the comps, that or save some money and go with coaxials for all 4 speakers instead. For example, here is a US Acoustics on ebay for $25+shipping. I've not dealt with that seller before, but he's been selling refurb'd US Acoustics on ebay for years.
  2. Have you taken impedance drop due to playing below tuning into consideration? No, No, No. and one more No. What? Impedance rises before and after tuning. Pick up Loud speaker Design cookbook or WinISD and look at some resistance / frequency graphs. Also a speakers impedance is never going to drop below its measured/rated impedance especially with power applied (unless the speaker fails). OP do not count on impedance rise, set gains accordingly, use a different amplifier, or use a different speaker.
  3. Keep the gain down and you will not blow them.. Just don't be a nut behind the volume knob.
  4. As a general rule, I like to put a brace on any panel longer than 18" "just in case." Dowels work well, as does all thread rod with washers/nuts. We used to say, "If I can throw the box off the roof and it doesn't break, run over it with the truck. If it holds up, it's ok. If not, time to rebuild it a little stronger." You can't go wrong with bracing as long as you account for the volume it takes up in the box. JL Audio has a good tutorial on their website about bracing you could look at as well. For your box, I would use two braces on the 38" dimension that look like a window with panes that touch all 4 sides of your box. That should be enough, but you can always add more. Here is a picture of the brace I used in my box. And how I placed it... It's probably not the best way to do it, but it held my fat @$$ while I jumped up and down on it before I put the sides on the box. I figured if it could hold me up, I wouldn't put enough pressure to hurt it from my sub. Good luck!
