My DSS Ethos Review
2 pointsSo to start, like my other review, here is my Review. Below, is a picture taken, one of my favorites, from Slamology 2014. I should start off by saying, this should NOT be an review, yes I've named the thread Review, but it should be more of an first impressions. The reason being, I've only had one weekend play time with them. Ok so to start off, my installation consist of 6 15" DSS Ethos powered by 3 Taramp HD8000, at this review 2 Taramps. Back up by 10 batteries and a single H/o Alternator. Again, I must stress that, these subs have never been played. Truck was running at 4pm Friday afternoon, and I was demoing Friday evening at 11pm. Ok, no the First Impressions finally begins. -------------- :musicality: So I'm not sure where this should go, either to the performance of the subs, or to the enclosure. Either way, holy crap was I blown away. Over and over again, I was told by the people who received an demo at Slamology that they were blown away by the sheer sound pressure across the entire bandwidth. A great song that displays this, is Young Jeezy - Put on. There are I believe about 4-5 different frequencies during the initial bass drop. I could bag trick that entire 45 second intro. Let me say that again, THE ENTIRE INTRO. Most people would only go in on the volume at the end of the bass line, where the lower frequency is. Which I don't blame them, everyone knows at lower frequencies it's easier to do "tricks". But these play just as hard down low as they do up high. Even have it on film, where people are amazed that I can do a shirt trick at 45hz just has much as someone else can at 30hz. The only difference is, 45hz hurts, no pun intended, and 30hz just feels like hair is telling you move out the way haha. :cooling: Start this section off by saying, there was no issues. Again, not sure if because of subs or if because of enclosure. If you notice, my build the subs are inverted, this was by design, to intentionally offer even more cooling to the subs. Now, remember, I have 16,000 watts going to the subs, of course it's not full 16,000 when you account for everything, but still. For these subs to be rated at 1,800 rms, they were definitely handling the 2,600 watts I was giving them full tilt. I have no hesitation about applying more power. With this particular design, power handling also goes up, so I feel rather comfortable applying 4k to each sub for world finals. The subs NEVER got hot on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Saturday night, I demo'd for quite a long time, maybe over 30-40 mins constant, and at the end of the night, I was finally able to get the motors warm. During Saturday, I believe Timmy mentioned he felt warm air coming out of the enclosure, but the subs weren't hot. I believe it could have been some trapped heat as that Asian climbed in the freaking box haha. I was also checking motor and beneath of the cone, and like I said, was worst warm to the touch, that's it. Was never able to bottom the subs out, smell any kind of coils, and no subs were blown. :build quality: Four of my subs were built by IA, the other two were from Quentin himself. All held up just fine with the abuse I gave them. There was never once, any kind of mechanical noise during the weekend. No loose spiders, no discoloration from the what I could see on the tinsel leads, no loose dustcaps. I would hear if one had popped into the sealed section. No ripped spiders, nothing of that nature. All was well, they are each in the same faction has out of the box. Which is a huge plus, as I was playing songs as high as 57hz and as low as 26hz and lower full tilt with high power. :SPL: Here is the fun part, right? haha. Once more testing commence, I will update with new numbers. So as of now, best scores are, 160.1 outlaw, and 159.1 dash driver door open. Again, BRAND NEW subs. Official best score, is 157.75 sealed on dash. This was without me know my peak. Score was at 57hz, later found out peak is 55hz IIRC. I will later measure lower frequencies full tilt and stuff. Going to try A LOT of testing. Again guys, there was NO, I mean absolutely NO testing yet. I believe right now, the box is tuned at 45hz? So, these number are out of the gate. We all know, with testing alone, numbers can go up as much as 2-4dbs. And these scores are at 16,000 watts, not the 24,000 watts. :personal thoughts: Wow, I'm just blown away so far. I just feel like, I finally have the setup I've always wanted, and a lot of that goes to the support and product of DSS. I just feel like the Ethos are kicking my ass when I turn the gain up. It's crazy, just going up 1/8th on the gain, and it's like holy fuck, strap up your seat belt. I was giving myself demos on the way up to Indy, and just 30seconds half gain would get my back itching. The entire ride up, I could not stop smiling of just pure happiness and joy haha. Then to give out to demos, with good feedback, made it that much better. I would ask every person I gave a demo of their personal thoughts compared to other builds, and the response was just unreal. I would ask them, informing them that they've listened to already at least 15 different demos already, and 8 out of 10 would say mine was the best or their favorite. Either because of the bass, the install, the overall sound, or if they couldn't breath haha. Just overwhelmed with the support from the whole community really. :moving forward: Just gonna put this out there, I plan on switching to 6 15" DSS Tridents. My first go around with the prototype, was meh. Mostly because it was only "as" loud as my evil, it couldn't' take the same power as my evil, and it had NO cooling in it. I'm hoping this will be addressed in the final product, and will give me a World tittle. For next year, I'll be running an Quad Alt setup in my Explorer. And to take the tittle this year, I need a 160 at the headrest, fused. Which is my new goal. Which goes with my new personal goal, of an 162 on the dash!!! :Final though: My final thoughts, and if you're to take anything from this. Is that, no, the ethos is not the best sub in the world. But the Ethos is the best sub for his power rating and for it's price point. ----------- credibility: F.i BTL UFO, SSA Icon, SSA Zcon, SSA Evil, DSS Prototype2 points

2 points- Sundown SD-3 Line : In the Works
1 pointSundown SD-3 Line : In the Works ----- Thanks to the success of the SD-2 8" model I started developing the SD-3 line; this will replace all SD-2 models in 8/10/12" sizes (there is no 15 in this series). The SD-3 motor and coil design will become under-hung like the 8" model on the bigger 10 and 12" models -- I am also further optimizing the parameters of all models for sealed enclosures... even the 8" model will be tweaked a bit more. They have the same topology as the 8" -- a 1" top plate and 1/2" long coil -- but the 10/12 design uses a 2.5" diameter coil compared to the 2" on the eight. As far as release date... by the time prototype is done and production is done probably October or so. ----- Here she is -- the first full 10" prototype : I am using an inverted surround to save front mount depth. ----- My least favorite part of verifying prototypes... cutting them down to check measurements. Also verified that the spider was, in fact, not the correct one. It was too stiff ; in the third pic you can see the spider is two layers but it should be a single layer. Based on my testing and dissection I am doing another round of prototypes. Actually two versions... one set with only some minor gap modifications (with correct single layer spider), and one set also with a wider magnet in case the spider change itself doesn't get me where I want to be. So hopefully I will have four more prototypes soon.1 point- Dracula's Droptop
1 pointMine doesn't turn off and since I use the car daily it loses at most 10% charge overnight with GPS on. I haven't installed Tasker yet, supposedly it's the bee's knees. I can't find a lot of things to complain about, charge works like a charm, I haven't tested OTG with charge through Pogo pins (all info is related to older versions and I have an app to enable it on the stock kernel supposedly). The thing is I still need to take it out to CNC the front trim. And by the time I get to do it, if something bugs me, I'll put the new kernel The ghetto rigged mount. I payed $30 for each set of license plates, might as well use them. Tablet sits a bit too high but once the front trim panel goes on, it presses it in position and it feels very solid. Day shot, button holes visible, holder visible. Hidden switch to charge when the car is off. I added it before soldering the pogo pins. Buttons installed1 point- Thanks Sundown for having NO customer support
There's the problem Jake. It's not your hobby , it's your business. When you have customers, it's no longer a hobby. Granted, you are still a small company in comparison, but you are at big name retailers and have a dealer network. You are in big boy territory playing with the big boys, so you need to handle yourself as they do. The big boys don't take the whole company to a show. They support their dealers as needed and in a timely and reasonable manner. They always have someone to take care of business and keep things running, You may have done this, but obviously you left behind the wrong individual(s). There should have been no need to notify the boss on his vacation. The one's left behind should have the capability to handle it. I applaud you defending your name and your company. It should have been handled differently. There should have been a simple apology, a rush to get a new woofer and the situation resolved as quickly as possible. No matter the number of employees, you obviously have some gaps that need addressed. This should help you in the long run, and I hope it does.1 point- Thanks Sundown for having NO customer support
False... there is no "we won't hire anyone" -- our staff has exploded from 4-5 guys to 15 people over the last 18 months. Several of the new staff are on the phones and e-mail full time. As the company matures we have MANY more calls and e-mails per sale due to legacy support. We are answering calls and e-mails about products sold 5-6 years ago at this point -- so total response volume grows MUCH faster than total sales volume so staff will necessarily lag a bit. As far as a "shitty response" -- I disagree -- I was never rude but I will not sit there and have someone say we absolutely are a terrible company without sharing our side of the story. Sorry, I won't do it, I am not going to stand for it. My staff works hard every day, as do I, to handle customers in the best way we possibly can. ------ As far as the actual CUSTOMER he understandably sad that his woofer is broken but he is by no means angry -- I am responding to his posts directly over on SMD and letting him know it's all being taken care of like always. I was on top of it the first I heard about an issue even on my personal family vacation. I know car audio is our hobby but we aren't selling emergency medical supplies; if we are away and unavailable for a day or two that should be understandable when we announced it a month in advance.1 point- Welcome to the IHoP v.2
1 pointMore pics later, but it's a start. I agree it is how it should sit. Actually maybe 1/2" higher in the front and 1/2" lower in the rear, but it is close. and now1 point- Welcome to the IHoP v.2

1 pointOn that subject, when you was back there with the meter, how much amperage was I pulling? I think you said around 300 amps right? So, figurativly speaking, obviously not 100% accurate, but on the safe side, that would be ~300 amps times 12volts which comes out to 3,600 watts, so times that by two we get 7,200 real time power right? Nope.. 457A per amp.1 point- Welcome to the IHoP v.2
1 pointFinally, some reason on the internet. I remember one time a friend tried to convince me it's faster to pour sugar from one of those paper sugar things by breaking it in half. When we compared directly opening one side vs opening in half, opening on one side was a lot faster. But somehow it was faster for him the way he did it.1 point- Welcome to the IHoP v.2

The NSv.3's are all built in house. Besides that, all subs coming from China are ran through QC when they arrive. How do you think they end up with b-stock items and the qc fail items they sell in the yard sales?1 point- Thanks Sundown for having NO customer support
They love audio just as much as you, so they do events and shit. Personally, I'd say get over it, or switch brands. Move on with your life. If you really want something, you'll do what it takes to get it. Sure it can be frustrating, but life's not fair. Spit, or swallow. Who gives a fuck.1 point- Welcome to the IHoP v.2
1 pointI know someone who has 285/45/22 on there 2006 silverado, and it looks pretty good. That's a 2006 silverado with a 2" drop in the front and 4" in the back, with 285/45/221 point- Welcome to the IHoP v.2

1 pointThe L-shaped metal is bolted to the case and another metal piece bolts to that to hold the plugs in place. Wires soldered directly to where the buttons were. Tested and working fine Hoping I can bolt it in the car this afternoon....1 point- Dracula's Droptop
1 pointCleaning it up: And I've started getting the tablet in, I won't be needing a very complicated CNC'd panel, which I spent 2 hours yesterday drawing... A CNC'd panel to go in the rectangular hole is needed but it's not as complicated as tracing the front of the tablet. I've opened up the tablet and the easy part is turning the USB and 3.5mm plugs 90 degrees and attaching them to a plastic panel. The hard part is soldering wires on the power and volume buttons. Volume buttons will be on the front, power button on the side.1 point- Dracula's Droptop
1 pointI got smart on this side and only cut the cardboard backing, leaving the vinyl to sit between the speaker and the mdf ring. BecauseRaceCar, stitch welding the door opening seam It desperately needs the tablet installed and a miniDSP. Hopefully I can balance a miniDSP and tires in May1 point- Thanks Sundown for having NO customer support
Or maybe you just see Sundown's side Grow up; and give someone else some shit on this forum for once, my balls hurt. I've been in his position before, and i've been the one who's had to get shit for another party taking forever.-1 points - Welcome to the IHoP v.2
