What exactly does "seriously messed up HD" mean? Do you know if it's sata or ide? Laptop hdd? Sata, laptop. It came out of a laptop that became unusable due to viruses. Install SP2 service pack 2 if you haven't already. It'll fix the annoying scroll, and is a tad safer.

Mike you can try out the above suggestions, or I'll see what I can come up with tomorrow morning.

Put it through some scanners like virus total site, but generally I just run it in a virtual machine of windows 7 (sandbox) and start packet sniffing, see if it connects anywhere and if so for what. And usually the computer will start hpopups and random site redirects.

I'll be home tonight and I can look. Problem is half the activation cracks have viruses. If you can wait I can probably find a legit one.

Glad you're on the right track now. You wouldn't believe how many times I've been stumped with something only to later find out the culprit was something so small or simple that it was overlooked.
