  1. So you're saying it would be best to tune to 32hz? I will definately do some research into that then. On this site they have some box designs for 15" Icons which are tuned to 30hz so im assuming that if I did decide to tune it to 32hz id take that same basic design with a different vent size? If the advantage of tuning lower isnt adding output I guess the idea is to be able to hit those lows more efficiently and with a proper overall system be able to hit a wider spectrum, but someone like me with a mediocre speaker system would be better off with the higher frequency tuning.
  2. The midbass in my car is fairly weak so I may want to take that advise. I listen to alot of indie but I mainly want the sub for when I listen to rap or dubstep and the plan was to use the volume knob on the amp to turn the sub down a bit when Im listing to indie and back up for when Im listening to other stuff. How big a sacrafice in loudness would I be making tuning to say 32hz rather than 30?
  3. Yea I plan on doing the big three and getting a yellowtop if necessary. Since the Icon is out of stock I guess im leaning towards the Fi Q. Ive looked at ascendant audio a little bit and called looking for a local dealer and was referred to one but was told he would be busy until monday. What do you guys think of a havoc? I think I might be over thinking things here but just wanna be sure Im picking the right equipment.
  4. Luke.H replied to emh9009's topic in Build Logs
Pretty sweet build. Crx's are sick cars too and yours is really nice. Si too haha nice car and nice system
  5. That crx is tight man. I really do like what I hear about the Fi but they are alittle over budget. I really like the idea of the Icon lol too bad theyre out of stock. Is there anything else I should be looking at sub wise? Ive considered DD as well but havent called them to find out the price on the 1515 I probly should get on that if its a good sub for my needs. Sorry to ask so many questions haha idk this is my first system and I just wanna be thorough
  6. So Ive been reading around a little more and am now thinking about an Icon 15 possibly. I read on the fi forums here and ppl were saying that in comarison to the bl the q didnt offer too much better sq and the bl got alittle louder, but because of the great reviews ive been reading on the Icon I was wondering if that would be a good option for my situation? If everything works out I am ordering a SAX-1200d on in the next coupla days. I noticed the rms on the SA-15 was 600 compared to the 1000 on the Icon or the Q so I was wondering if it wouldnt be able to get as loud as the other two. Just wondering what you guys think and I think I'll order my cable from weldingsupply.com btw because of the good things ive heard about them 4ga I think.
  7. Thanks for the help guys Im glad im on the right track. I am leaning more towards the SA-15 now because it is more budget friendly and from what I can tell will be just as good as the Fi. I liked the coolin option on the Fi but I think thats more for someone whos gonna be using it harder than I am because i listen to other stuff besides rap so i wont constantly be pounding it. My friend has the mach which doesnt have the cooling and hes been fine. What do you guys think about that box design for my purposes? Its tuned to 30 hz which is what I was planning on tuning too. Is that good for my musical preferances? I want to be able to get good SPL and hit lows with good sq as well. Heres that box again Box design
  8. Thanks for the imput I appreciate it. I think I like the idea of the single 15 best if im honest. I have read that 12's have more surface area but as far as the box and space etc im just more comfortable with the 15 and because ive heard that general setup if that makes sense haha also the single 15 would be the cheaper option because I only need to buy one. From what ive read I cant tell which would really be better the SA or the Fi. Fi has the cooling option tho
  9. Yea i like the idea of a single 15 at 1000 watts thats what my buddy has and i know i like it from what ive heard but i realize that its 80 or 90% install and 10% equipment so his results arent garunteed
  10. So I was wanting to get my first sub set up in my car and have been doing some research and was hoping to get some information from you guys. I have an 02 Nissan Altima with a pioneer deh 4200ub headunit and pioneer 6x9's and alpine type S's up front. I was originally asking about getting comps in my rear deck but Ive decided I would really like a nice sub stage instead. Amp wise I think Ive decided on something from Sundown Audio. I contacted someone from Sundown and was asking about a refurb model because I am on a budget and the savings would help, my budget is around 500-600 for the amp and sub. DB-r is their refurbisher from what ive read and currently they dont have any of the amps Im looking at but I was told a SAX-1200d would be sent over for refurb soon and I could possibly purchase that. I was thinking either the SAX or an SAE-1000d or SAZ-1000d because Id like to push about 1000w. My altenator is 100 amps and it is stock. Im planning on building the box myself and this was the general design I was thinking My link its from Mach5's site. My trunk opening is 48x11 inches. A friend of mine has a SAE-1000d and mach5 15" that Ive heard and like. I listen to indie and rap and dubstep so I was thinking of getting a sub that would get good SQ and SPL. His box is tuned more toward spl and i want to get good spl as well but sq is also important to me so Im wanting more of a "SQL" setup. I want a 15". I have been looking into either an FI audio Q 15 or SA-15. Both seem to have a good mix of SPL and SQ. The FI is alittle over my budget but I really like what ive read so if its definately the best choice Ill spend the extra cash. Im new to subs so i was wondering what you guys thought of what ive come up with so far. I was looking for some suggestions on what subs to get for my application and the best way to tune the box Im thinking maybe 30hz?? I tried to include all the info I could think of, but if I've left anything out Ill add it.
  11. Ok Ill look in to that thanks I appreciate it. I just had no idea what direction to head in. Im just trying to learn this stuff so how come you reccomend 6x9 subs over the comps or 6.5 subs? IB as in infinite baffle right so the speakers are just mounted standard. Im just asking so im slightly informed before I go about doing all this I dont wanna half ass it or nothin
  12. Sorry for the lack of description with kind of flat haha. I just mean that there is like no bass. Im not comparing it to a car with subs or anything but compared to cars ive ridden in with factory speakers and no drivers or anything just door speakers those just seem to have more bass and sound better. The rear seems to vibrate alot at certain frequencies. It could be distortion? I dont really no its not all songs and I dont think its at a real low frequency seems to be at upper mid maybe? Idk im not very knowledgable with this stuff. Im basically just trying to get a system with good overall sound quality nothing super crazy my musical preferance is mostly indie but some dubstep and rap. So because like you said no good options are available in 6x9 getting a 6.5 adapter would be good right? I was thinking adding better speakers that are amplified in the rear would add some bass without having to fabricate anything up front because I probly wouldnt be able to and for resale purposes. Like you said about the HU's 5w its pretty low so I was thinking an amp would be a must. Would adding comps to the rear and amplifying the type s's be good or is that a stupid idea? Like I said im no expert so im just looking for some help in deciding what to do i would leave the 6x9s as fill, kit kick panel pods and get a set of 6.5 components leave the 5.25s in the doors and get a four ch for your front stage. leave the 6x9s on deck power. if thats not enough get a 6.5 - 8" woofer in a tiny sealed box. mounted under the package tray... (rear deck/top of trunk) but i am nooooooo sq expert at all. just the approach i would take... I hadnt realy considered kickpods. Id be alittle concerned instaling them tho because I dont keep my cars for more than 2 years I get a car from our dealership and drive it for awhile then switch. The closer the car stays to stock the better because of that. I dont mind mounting an amp and crossover cuz its not too noticeable and when I go to sell it I could leave it or probly take the components etc out. I just got this car tho so Ill have it for at least a year or so and really dont care for the current sound system and just wanted to upgrade it. but I guess if I didnt do the kickpods what would you guys reccomend? Edit: when I say stock I just mean appearance wise not oem speakers etc

  14. I have a 2002 nissan altima without the bose speaker system. I currently have a Pioneer deh-4200ub headunit and in the front I put in 2 alpine type S coaxial speakers. In the rear deck are 2 pioneer 6x9s that were installed by the previous owner. Im looking to add some more midbass to my system because the current speakers just seem sort of flat. I dont have an amp hooked up and the HU is powering the speakers. Ive read here that an amp is necessary to get the most out of your speakers because the HU pushes something like 22w. Im pretty content with the type S's up front sq wise. They are 5 1/4 if I remember right and thats all that would fit in there without fabrication so that is why I put them in instead of components. I dont want to do any kind of crazy fabrication because honestly I just dont have the ability. I was thinking of getting adapter plates for the rear deck for 6.5's because from what Ive read 6x9's are an awkward size and dont produce good sound quality. Ive also read that most of you guys dont mess with the rear speakers because they dont make a difference, but with my current coaxials up front do you think that adding components to the rear would add midbass? Or would just 6.5 drivers or something be better? Ive been researching and havent been able to decide what would be best. My overall budget would be preferable around 200 or 250. Id rather not go over that but if I have to maybe I could. So far if I went the component route Ive been looking at the Crescendo Audio 6.5's ive also seen bangingmc's build log and liked the type r's but they would probly be over my budget. I dont know where to start on the amp situation I've seen some hifonics amps for my price range but have a friend who has had bad experiences with them so I know i dont want those. I havent looked hard at amps because I dont really know what I need. Should i get a 2 channel for just the 6.5's or a 4 channel and power the type s's? Theyre coax's so idk. Im just looking for some info on where to start here. I know you guys say to listen to the speakers myself because everyone's ears are different and once I get a direction to head in Ill try to find some stores. Sorry for so much information I just want to be sure to include all you may need to know. Any input would really be appreciated because im fairly lost. Thanks
  15. So I was checking the sensitivity of some speakers and if I understand what you were saying correctly the higher the better if I dont run an amp. I looked at some alpine type s's and they are rated at 87db/w the D3's at 89.5db and pioneer d series are rated at 88db. So numbers wise the diamonds are the best. But their all around upper 80s. Is that too low for my head unit. Should I look at cheaper sets? If I went with coaxials I would like to get the best possible set without running an amp. I know it is recommended but at this point I would rather avoid that.
  16. That makes sense because when I was looking at those components they raan at a higher wattage than most coaxs. So in your opinion would I be better off with a pair of diamond audio d1 or d3 coaxs than say some pioneer or alpine coaxs? The D3 coaxs are around 60 on onlinecarstereo. I doubt that any Diamond speakers would work well off the paltry power from your headunit. If you are dead set on not getting even a small amp, you'd probably get the best results from an inexpensive set of 2-way Alpine, Pioneer or Kenwood coaxials. I'm very much of the opinion that you should add a small amp. And power handling has nothing to do usually with the power that they need to sound good. Look at the sensitivity number. That will give you better indication about how much power they're going to need. Higher the number the less power they need to give adequate output. This applies to mid and high frequency speakers, not subs. What type of amp would you reccomend? Like how much power and a good brand. I dont know anyone who has an amp for their speakers so I am not at all familiar with this stuff. I would like to have a good sounding set up though but I dont want to go super crazy with it. I would like a good balance between sound quality and midbass. I appreciate your input tho thank you. I will look into some amps and lower end coaxs as well just to see whats out there.

  18. Hi I recently installed a pioneer deh4200ub head unit in my car. It is a nissan altima without the bose system. I currently have 2 pioneer 6x9s in the rear deck and 2 5.25 speakers in the front door and 2 tweeters on the front door as well. Their at the same level as the side mirrors if you know what I mean. Anyway the speakers in my front door seem to rattle and I am just not happy with the SQ. I would like to upgrade to something alittle nicer. I am fine with the pioneer 6x9s in the back though. I am more concerned with the front because from what Ive read here that is the most importan part as far as SQ goes. I was thinking of buying Diamond Audio D3's. They make them in component and coaxial. I dont know much about Diamond Audio I have just heard good things about them from a few sources but havent read too many reviews so I am curious in your opinion in them as well. But would I be better off with the components or coaxials? I do not have an amp in my car and dont really want to buy one. Ive heard you can install comps without an amp tho. Would I notice a big difference between the DA coaxs and comps? From what Ive read the biggest differences are that you can place your tweeters wherever you like and the crossover that comes with components. I would probably just put my tweeters where the factory tweeter were. Any opinions on this would be greatly appreciated
