Controller Area Network Bus system. It allows communications via one wire versus an entire wiring harness. You have various modules throughout the vehicle and everything is connected via one wire. Take your door locks for example. One cable runs to the door switch panel versus the several wires it used to take. It's just a way of simplifying vehicle processes.

Absolutely ZERO need for the meter unless competing. The small gains measurable with a meter will never be heard, so there is no point unless you want bragging rights or something. He's looking for a discrenable change via ear, so the meter is pointless.
