While there are innumerous sources of protein, the whey/soy powder based shakes allow for a comparatively faster absorption of protein and amino acids. These shakes are supplements, and most health nuts/bodybuilders/powerlifters seem to agree that at least 75% of your protein should come from traditional food sources. Also, from what I've read, the faster absorption rates of said shakes are the most beneficial post workout. Basically, there is no extra benefit of drinking a shake for breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, or as dinner if it wasn't post workout. One shake after workouts, food for everything else. Umm, miso soup is a liquid... It's not the physical form that matters. The body absorbs the proteins found in whey powder and soy isolate powder much faster than the proteins found in whole foods.
