Welcome to the IHoP
I'm not in your situation but why such a steep increase? 1. The state taxes all income with 16%, except software developers. But a huge part of the company income has to be software. Since software development in Emerson is only a small slice of the operations, we don't get that tax deduction. 2. When I got hired I turned down National Instruments and that was 50% more than what I took at Emerson, because they were on the other side of town. 3. Being a big company, wages of "foot soldiers" aren't what they should be in the software field. If you get into the management side of things wages are high but I'm a long way away from a management position and why should I stay for years with less when there are options? 4. Most of the people who left since I joined left for 50-100% more pay I was asked for a target amount. We have a saying here: you're not a fool for asking, you're a fool for giving. So if I get turned down, meh, I still have a job and there are other options. Unique situation.

I am only guessing. An old timer once gave me a similar speak whe I was asking why these old machines used v belts and not chains or something similar. (I didnt know what a synchrobelt was called at the time). He said that they are not as efficient necessarily, but they provide protection if the work end locks up, even if only for a second, so the motor doesn't feel the sudden damage.

My guess is the V belt absorbs some of the force by way of slippage when there is a hang up. A synchrobelt won't allow slippage and so the bearing takes any and all problems. A synchro belt pully and belt would have more mass too I would bet. That may not be completely true in all cases but the usually the synchros are wider and will have more moving mass.

Shweet. You should have fixed it, said it was the motor then sold the broken one on eBay.

That would be hoot. I am not good at frightening people. Well..... at least not in the way your customers want to be frightened. We learned something this year, people enjoy being startled much more than frightened. I think what happens is when you frighten some one they shut down and hide their eyes and don't see anything after that. When they are startled, their senses are heightened and looking at everything and wanting more, which makes their haunt experience much more entertaining for them. Matt you would fit right in and have a blast! That is the word. Startled. I don't do that so good.

Oh shit yeah, I have a lot left. I am extremely stupid at times and don't know it. I just have to learn to be happy and less stressed. I never learned these things as a child or young adult.

I have kind of realized that I made a huge mistake in life by not giving myself any breaks. I think the high level of stress I have been living has taken a super big price on me and my health.... While I have quite a bit to show for my worrying it is only because I have an extremely high threshold. And ultimately this is a downfall. It results in me not realizing when I a working in the red until I have gone way past the level my body can compensate for. If I would have taken better care of myself I would have so much more in my life.

Measuring instrument? Caliper, micrometer, rule, tape measure, pi tape, calibrated penis? My penis is wider than the thing so it's hard to gauge the size...... hmmm.m

Welcome to the IHoP
I meant do I measure where the belt rides or the lip? It sounds silly and I assume the belt, but weirder things have been a rule.

How do I check the diameter? Is it written on the pully?

Let's say it's 300A @ 13v from the alt, that means 3900w. Let's round it off to 4000w and I think that means the alt needs will need to be turned by at least a 4kw motor. 4kw at a 110v plug = 36A draw. Do you typically have 40A 110v plugs in the US ? I'm assuming 100% efficiency and some rounding. And if the alt consumes less power than it produces, then I'm backing down. You can't make power out of nothing. You are forgetting about the gearing ratio. The motor doesn't have to spin at the same speed at the alternator. If my eyes are still ok, those pulleys look identically size. Any arguments in favor of the setup or against my math ? If we get into the generator discussion my home generator is a measly 3kw one and uses a 6.5hp engine to run it. So it's a different situation than you 54kw generator. 54kw = 72.4 hp. I'm curious what you used to get 868 hp. Now, for some other info on power required to drive an alternator: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r24644940-how-much-horse-power-is-needed-to-power-a-alternator- Honestly, you can't make energy out of nothing. An alternator cannot be driven by less power than it produces, otherwise we would all drive for free. I reject your reality and replace it with one I am more comfortable with.

Kicking it at the BILs house. Feeling odd being back North side. It has sure cleaned up a lot in some ways. That is for sure. I also love the scary as fuck neighbors 2 houses down. "Who are you at (insert BIL name) house." "Just his brother checking on the Corny(his dog)." If I was up to no good those boys would have made me shit myself.
