Can you get a reduced rate on the OS through school or anyone you know in school? That would help with a budget for actual hardware. Also... is the speaker that stupid dell specific speaker and sub system? If so it will not plug and play with a new system usually! If it's 3.5mm you're probably cool but if it's some other I/O you could be screwed.

I rocked win 7 from the streets for a loooong time. My wife's school gives out legit coppies for a song though so I got one that way.

* I also may be building a "gaming rig" to work with my server type rig soon too. I'm just not sure if I even want it though. I am just the type of guy who hates waiting for a computer to think. If a web page takes more than 1.5 seconds to load up after it's been downloaded I get crabby.

depending on price of windows 7 for KM that last one might be work a look. I have personally used the Atom systems though.... I wouldn't want to browse on them. Plus the extra keyboard and mouse would be a waste. I am however a snob I have my machine OCed by 30% or so and a full tilt graphics card and I mainly surf. Truthfully you only need a Mobo and processor and ram right MK(baring your answer on OS costs)? You have optical drives and hard drives already right?

The end, what would you build for 600 bucks? Help MK out. I honestly think a quad core from my machine which would be cheep would be enough, but if the price for that mobo and processor are that cheep I think it's worth it considering 5 years down the road when you need a boost it could be OCed or just upgraded.
