ShiZZZoN's Build Log
Just FYI, the crossover point isn't the point at which the frequency response starts to get changed, it's the -3db point. So in your example, 5 khz would be -3 decibels from reference. I don't know if 4 khz would be affected by this in this instance or not.

watts vs. true watts
Eh... Eh... Didn't want to go there well......I figured we were just talking solid state here. apples to apples.

Welcome to the IHoP
Just made a no-bake jello oreo dessert thing. I don't have a mixer and it said to beat it on high for 3 minutes. So my arm is really tired now. It better be good.

Custom built 18" Beast
that thing must have an mms through the roof. And an efficiency of what, 70 db?

watts vs. true watts
there are no "sq" amps. they should all sound the same. I don't know why the maker of the lunar amps would rate his stuff at 1500 then tell you it only puts out 500. To me, "true" means RMS. So 500 RMS watts. power is power. if you put 500 watts on a sub from amp A, it will be the same loudness as 500 watts from amp B.

Speakers... component setup...
oh, well shoot, 500 is a decent chunk of change. When I recommended coaxials I thought you were pressed (like under 100) and just wanted the easy fix. See if you can fit 6.5" components in your doors (find a place for the tweeter as well, as it will be separate from the woofer). Then you can buy an amp for them as well to help bring them to life a little more. As for suggestions, I've been out of the loop on new products and prices for a while. The manufacturers that are on this forum all have good stuff, so I'd check there first. I like my JL XR comps, though.

OMG look at this
hmm, I remember saying this would happen in another thread and somebody else saying it wouldn't/couldn't........ As for what to do, you're pretty much stuck between two options. The first would be to scrap this amp for something that can handle the input voltage. The second would be to just turn the gains up on your other amps so that they max out at 20 on your head unit volume as well. You'll obviously lose some steps in loudness between notches on the head unit. But 20 should be enough. I guess it all depends on how much you love this new amp. When did the amp shut off? Was it during your full tilt runs or just randomly? If during full tilt, it may have overdrive protection on it. It sensed the clipping and shut down. If just randomly, maybe it's a lose wire arcing and shorting the load.

rms question
I would guess maybe 1000 watts on that legacy. I figure 4000 is a max rating, so knock it in half for the RMS rating- 2000. then knock that in half because it's legacy and that number is likely rated not only overly high in the first place, but with 18 volts at 65% distortion for 1/10th of a second.

I keep having dreams about lions eating friends and family members. dammit.

Speakers... component setup...
I'd say just buy some coaxials and put them in the factory spot.

Gonna mount them into those air ducts? Lots of cooling straight onto the motor! and maybe some kind of horn effect. crazy imaging anyways, ha.

Welcome to the IHoP
You better like the way it sounds! I would love to be there to see the "fudge me" disappointed look on your face if you turn it on and it doesn't sound the way you thought. haha. But really, I hope you do like it.

4 by 6's whats good
what about doing a 3-way? putting a 6-8" in the door or kick with the 4" and tweet in the dash? Otherwise I'd do a 4" component set and mount the tweeter wherever it sounds best.

SSD 12 or 15?
you have never heard of a sub that calls for ported box only? No, I have. Just not what he's saying, that the 15" SSD is for ported and the 12" SSD is for sealed. Usually the 15 and 12 inch versions in the same model line are meant for the same application. Many, in fact, are the exact same motor with just bigger basket and cones. I don't know if this is the case for FI or not. Some companies engineer each size so that performance is comparable and proportional throughout the sizes, regardless of size. But even in that case, they should call for the same style box.

SSD 12 or 15?
Ported can still sound good on rock music. If built right, the transient response will still be there (mine is). However, if the 15 is more meant for ported boxes (I've never heard of that, usually the same model line will perform in similar boxes), I'd go 12. I think you'd want sealed. As for the enclosure, yes you have to add the amount of space the sub takes up. So in your example, you may need to build the box to have 1.6 or 1.65 cubic feet internally.

Welcome to the IHoP
You talking British Petroleum? You'll get something free out of it. Oil companies always give little things away. I think I got a small digital clock from one, a little bison from another, a laser pointer from another............. But I think most of them just talked about opportunities you'll have with them. I remember them talking about how you can go overseas if you want, like just offshore western Africa, etc, or be transferred to most any of their offices around the country and globe. But most of the time if you work for a company big in America, you'll be in Houston.
