  1. Because I don't want to hurt when I get rained on or they get ripped off. Life doesn't care how careful you are, stuff happens. These are waterproof, well unless I wear them when I dive in. They've laughed off a blizzard and a handful of absurd rainstorms.
  2. By the way, what am I supposed to do with bookshelf speakers however well designed? Stuff them in my pockets? My headphones are my system and my Nike's are my home.
  3. I am working with what I have access to, and I asked a fairly specific question. So what I listed, is what I'm limited to. I do not have the means to get anything else. If you don't know how it would work in headphones or are not able to guess, then simply don't answer, no one is holding a gun to your head. I have been chopping shit up and misusing it for years as M5 so lovingly details for us all above. It's a shame that I never managed to get along with him, because that ass is damn smart, no joke; but we have different tastes to say the least. I have used traditional speakers in headphones before, I had some monster 2.5's and they sounded much better than factory when powered, but the mids were muddy to an unforgivable degree without the amplifier. The bass was the same as the normal speakers unamped, amped however was stoopid, it felt like my first time hearing three sealed twelve's all over again. Ultimately dismantled because of weight; hurt the neck after an hour or so. You guys know what I'm about by now. I'm broke and want a bass fix anyway I can get it. Having fun with it isn't a bad thing. If it makes you upset, I'd say don't read my stuff. I need a place to get some kind of opinion on my ideas, so I can't just dip out. Some people are very helpful here.
  4. In all of the projects I have ever posted about on here, i've probably spent a total of less than $100. I get things secondhand, or pick them. That being said, the drivers i've found so far are all under $5, so a pair would be less than 15 after shipping. It's starting to get clear that it's useless asking questions here anymore, I understand it's not exactly a conventional project, none of mine are really; but I would at least expect a bit of a break for being excited enough about audio stuff to want to experiment in any way I can , despite not being financially well off. Not everyone can afford nice toys; I'm homeless, I come to the local college to use the wifi to get on here. I'm trying to stay off drugs and out of jail by dumping my focus on speakers, and this is how i'm met with it. I'm lost; I thought this was a hobby not a cut and dried process to attain sound. What happened to trying new things, or having fun with it? I used to really respect people's opinions here, but not while you all put me down like this. I quit.
  5. My text editor is going buck wild and everything is clumbing together and it's dumping HTML tags all over it. my bad
  6. If you haven't read any of my other posts; my reputation here is broke as hell. I build things to how I like them, because I don't have the money for nice stuff, i'm a tinkerer. So let me ask again, does anyone know of a good maker of 50mm drivers or low power speakers in that size? I have these set to where they'll take quite a bit of power (for headphones at least) and they'll drop to 28hz and make your ears itch and vision shake no problem; I'm just looking for something more efficient; well, and i'm concerned about the wires melting the diaphram, they've worked their way loose from the glue, but so far no issues other than slight rattles at suuuuuper low notes with no mids or highs to cover it up. I'm thinking about building one of those Altoids tin amps to go with it. Let me put it this way to paint a better picture of the goal; These are SPL headphones. Mids and highs need to keep up, but bass is the goal.
  7. I got bored with my Skullcandy's, they sounded like asshole (and still do when not on the amp) but I was wondering, if doubling up on drivers might help the bass response; I split up a few cables and ran them to my HT amp, and they sounded much better, but that is not the kind of thing you can lug around for casual listening; I was thinking of getting two pairs of 50mm drivers and mounting them in place of the existing drivers, to see if a little more area helps; the bass only got good around xmech of the drivers currently in there, tried to get funky and had to back it off to prevent the coils from shredding. Anyone know of a reliable brand of 50mm speakers? I was going to go with more cellophanes, but if any ultra low power speakers of that size exist, i'd give them a try.
  8. All I have is my phone for now; no digital EQ, just a five band on my amp. Computer is in storage.
  9. pics!! Gimme a few days It's ugly as hell, even by my standards.
  10. So it actually turned out decent; I ran short on wood, and ended up still tuned higher than i'd like, but it hits noticeably lower, and louder. I'ma rustle through the garage for some threaded rod, to still the centers of the new panels; they flex a bit; all I had was 1/2" I guess I might sand and spray it before I move.
  11. Personally, my favorite way to do it, but they were just awful, the eq I have just couldn't separate it enough. I am not worried about power handling, moving to an apartment soon, so loud isn't really an option anymore. Just decent sounding.
  12. I have two Sony explode 10's I got last year; I have them in 1.3cuft each sealed; I am in the process of moving, all the big tools are in storage, so I can't build a new box. I have some scrap wood laying around, and I want to knock out a wall of the box and combine it with another slightly smaller enclosure and port it; I hate scrapping it together, but these are my killing time subs, I just play with them to try ideas; anybody have any tips on making junk subs drop lower? I am not after a ton of output, it's for a computer speaker setup; just want real low extension. I am looking to get it tuned to 24hz, with -plenty- of port; does anyone have any idea what kind of airspace I'd need to add to drop it that low? I have ~200w rms to feed it feed it, maybe a little more; I also have polyfill, but i'm not really sure how it affects ported boxes. Also, it's not for looks, so any weird design tips are cool, it's hidden off to the side of the room. Tired of having just some monstrous midbass lol
  13. I'm looking to have everything by this fall.
  14. They're all goofy; only notable ones were the pair Bose 6.5's and a pair of cubes on the kenwood 50.4, and the jbl mids and altec lansing in a bandpass on the earthquake 200.4 I've made like nine, customs are more fun but the frankensteins are usually louder.
  15. You are absolutely correct, one of these threads are made every year by this guy. Can't say it isn't the truth, but I suppose i'm better off than I was as a daydreaming 16 year old with no job
  16. All of my preference is formed from working on my friends and family's cars. I'm waiting for a fine to be processed to start driving again. All of them have trunk cars however. The only Suv I've worked on was my buddy with the two BTL18's.
  17. Yeah, I'm in Fort Wayne, I live five minutes from the Coliseum, on St Joe Center. I love the way a clamshell looks, but I am not sure I am willing to take the risk of putting it together and not liking it Subs up port back seems alot simpler, plus I can swap it easier; not to mention I occasionally have nightmares about mounting upper subs in a clamshell (one nasty one was of a set of hcca's in the upper half O.O lol ) Let me ask this, does the amount of cabin space either help or hinder the ability to focus on the lower notes? Does cabin gain favor a particular band of frequencies?
  18. Sounds good to me. now, for four fifteens, in a small SUV on moderate to low power, would subs up port back trump a wall as far as output? I'm not looking for numbers, and slightly louder isn't worth the extra build time and cost for this particular project. I am aware of the many variables, but as of now, especially for 15's, I am interested in the obsidians or the X's. I have a thing for low tunings, and I imagine I'll aim for 25-28hz. Starting power will be 1,000rms, just to have it moving while I save up for a matching amp.
  19. You misunderstood. I want four subs; not a fancy sub. The PSI's were simply my first idea.
  20. I am looking to go with a set of four; i'm not very picky about looks, but that's the one thing I can't manage to shake myself on As far as power goes; I don't NEED to be able to feed it a certain amount; I mean, I haven't even started amp shopping yet. As long as it goes boom, I am happy Anybody with feedback on four 18's in a four door Blazer? The box design I have in mind is fairly simple, no funny angles, IIRC it is similar to Galamonkey's Expedition with four BTL's Back seats are for sissies, so I am cool up to the B pillar.
  21. It sounds a lot like port noise, I'm not sure how much port area he has; I just thought it was a lot, big slot port across the bottom; I can fit my face in there Guess I just wrote it off as a possible cause. I apologize to the BeeTLes then You know, occasionally it's refreshing to be wrong. Glad i'm not forming false opinions of amazing subs Here's a question, because i'm sticking with lower power; more surface area seems beneficial. Had anyone here seen, or done personally, a wall/clamshell in a four door blazer with 18's? I'll be back in a bit, need a rag to wipe the drool off my screen, haven't window shopped for woofers in quite a while.
  22. How do the Obsidians sound? I am heavily in favor of SPL; however, my friend's BTL 18's have that choppy sound, that rougher sound I hear more with SPL geared subs, and I am trying to stay away from that. It isn't that they sound bad, not at all. I'm just, picky I guess; it's not a deal breaker, i'm just trying to get an idea of what to expect. I also have a concern about durability; I know myself, and I like to beat on my toys. They are rated for 600w rms, which I am more than satisfied with. If I ran 1k rms daily to each, provided i'm not a noob and it's nice clean power, would they stress on it? I'm usually pretty fair on the volume, but some days, I just need to vent and my speakers have always been my stress toy.
  23. Any sub that is heavy on the low end, and does not stretch too much beyond a grand for four, is an excellent candidate. I like my slowed music. Jon is absolutely right. I am a tinkerer, and I am never mad about having room to upgrade; so I start low. 1-2k rms is about what i'd opt to feed them, but I want room to double up on that in the future. My end goal is low and loud; I smile when I imagine people bailing out of -my- car This is my first major endeavor, so i'm not about to noob it up. I have been taking notes and drawing out ideas for a while now. What do you guys thinks about Obsidian Audio? I'm hoping to avenge my reputation around here somewhat We'll see how it plays out. Still in the planning stage for now, but we shall see.
  24. Well, I liked PSI for the options they offered, sounds like I was right, too good to be true. I just want four 15" somethings to go in a Blazer, that don't need an assload of power; but won't fizzle out if I feed them more. I'm genuinely poor, but luckily my friends won't let me starve due to my audio problems; I'd like to keep it at or under $1,000 for the four. I'm also open to 12's and 18's, but 18's would likely have to be clamshelled, and I don't have enough experience to do that by myself. But I am after SPL, and learning is always fun. I'm tired of small thrift shop speakers; time to move up a notch.
