  1. Typically cabin gain sets in at around 60-80 Hz and below. I can't be sure why you are experiencing the peak at 50 Hz, but you might also try moving your enclosure to different locations in the car since there could be cancellation issues at hand as well.
  2. My buddy Thilo Stompler (owner/engineer @ TC) uses a model very similar, if not that exact model in his car. Though I should note that he doesn't use it much for EQ as he does for basic sub-volume adjustment, nonetheless, it has been going strong for a long while and seems quite reliable.
  3. I'm using a 15" RL-p currently in a 3.5 cu ft net @ 25 Hz ported enclosure off of a single channel since it is a dual 4ohm model. Been swamped this week but will soon be building some nice sealed boxes for the RL-s drivers (both sizes) and testing them on the EP2500 in due time...
  4. 11" indeed. The 1.38 cu ft net figure will result in more of a peaked response with respect to the 1.27 cu ft, which you may find you like or you may find it a little too boomy. You can of course try experimenting by throwing something (like a chunk of wood) into your box to bring down the volume a bit

First off, allow me to thank you for the name-dropping you do around the various forums when people are looking to work a driver into an application that the RL-p will excel in, I really do appreciate it and am very happy that you are happy with your RL-pizzies! That said, I think you're on the right track and that the 1 cu ft net volume (1.18 cu ft gross internal) would be a good place to start given the ungodly amount of power you are throwing at that poor little RL-p You might even consider movin' up to 1.2 net if you want a little more extension down low, along with a little more output up high - but it's all up to you, with that amount of power the 1.0 net should do ya well.

As suggested in email (but also for anyone else with similar concerns who may happen upon this thread ), ditch the polyfill and if you still want to flatten the response more, slug the box with a chunk of wood or something that will bring down your internal box volume to around 0.4 cu ft net. Here's hoping you get your setup to where you want it!
  7. Hehe, I knew it was only a matter of time.. Like I've been hammering home in the various threads on here - it is important that we let go of some of the inferences that we are accustomed to when looking at this driver. Due to the new topology, it is not going to react the same way as a traditional design. But hey, I hear where you're comin' from and hope that someday you'll get a chance to listen to one of these yourself and then make up your mind
  8. The enclosure rec's are geared towards home theater use because based strictly on modelling, this is what seems to be the most practical application for this driver. Now I'm sure quite a few people will end up using these in their cars, but until we get some real-world testing done I only want to start with recommendations for the boxes that seem to be the most sure-fire. Particularly when it comes to ported boxes, as I think the sealed box recommendations are quite suitable for in-car use but this driver is not nearly as flexible in the ported alignment. As to why I didn't suggest a 4 cu ft enclosure at 30 Hz, is because it looks to make for a +12 dB peak at tuning, something that I don't think most people would want, particularly considering that cabin gain would raise that peak even more! If one absolutely craves a ported alignment, our Premium series drivers are the ticket. If one can dig a really powerful sealed alignment, Supreme all the way Believe me Cougar, I didn't include that note about simulated modelling and "subject to change" for no reason I will be doing lots of my own testing as time permits over the coming weeks, and of course I'm sure the demo-ring along with the first customers will have their own data to add to the pool. I'd estimate that in about a month we will have a tighter range of recommended enclosures for various applications. Ultimately, I would like to see SoundSplinter not only as a retailer but as a knowledge-base for people new to the do-it-yourself audio arena. I do understand that there is a general lacking on the end of manufacturer's when it comes to sharing a clear and complete understanding of their products and I assure you that this is something I will work strongly to improve upon constantly as we roll along. One step at a time...
  9. You do have a good point that the recommendations weren't as consistent as they should have been. The 15" had a considerably wider range of recommended sizes, but not anymore! I just expanded the upper recommended limit for the 12" from 3 cu ft to 6 cu ft. Balance to the force You will gain about 2 dB from the 3 to 6 cu ft enclosure on the 12, and while you could use even larger volumes to achieve a slightly flatter response, the added extension would be so minimal as to make it impractical for most applications, hence why the recommendation stays on the smaller side at 3 cu ft. The ported recommendations are kept on the small side with low-tuning in order to maintain a reasonable response curve. Any larger or tuned higher and your response becomes a mountain out of a mole hill .. As stated, these drivers are most practical in the sealed alignment. Though, I think we may also see that the plots don't always tell the full truth once more real-world results in various applications start to pour in. Speaking of which, the demo-unit has left my hands and is on its way to mrray's place where I'm sure it will get a good workout

Completely understandable given that this driver is not going to perform in the manner of a traditional subwoofer. All things considered, it is easiest to implement these Supreme LMT's in moderate to large sealed enclosures. Ported enclosures are viable, however require extremely low tuning in order to maintain a +/- 3dB frequency response over an acceptable range of subbass frequencies. You might think it crazy to tune down to 16 Hz but traditional tuning frequencies will result in a massively peaked response curve, something that may be good for SPL comp's, but not for discerning ears. Given the proper enclosure and power (900 - 1800 watts), these drivers are sure to be a magnificint addition to any home theater for true-to-life, hard-hitting, knock-you-out-of-your-seat accurate bass reproduction. While slightly less practical for the car audio environment, they would indeed be an amazing addition for your ride provided you can accomodate the power and space constraints necessary for optimal performance.   11. Oh hell yes! It's always great to see people happy with their purchase - makes me happy!

Now of course it'll be different for everyone - but when I think of the RL-s, my FIRST thought is home theater since this driver has the capability to withold all of its supreme ( ) sound quality at very high output levels. I'm using a Behringer EP2500 amp that will output 2500 watts @ 4ohms bridged (or two channels of 1250 @ 2ohms), along with a Behringer crossover deck for the subwoofer line - for a combined price of less than $400 and let me tell you it sure does the trick damn well! Of course this driver is also suitable for car audio use by all means - but the reason why I personally would not opt to put one of these in my car is simply because of the requisite for massive power, lots of space, and the weight of the damn thing. I have no desire to go deaf in my car, and a couple 8's in my ride will have me grinning like an idiot no problem anyway!
  13. Yea, it's a bummer about the 2ohm coil not coming through. It certainly was intended to come in at a much lower DCR, but after passing on two batches of coils that were smaller than we needed, the last one turned out to be right on spec with the exception of a higher DCR than we had hoped for. I can't make any promises, as this may be a manufacturing limitation with our current coil producer in Florida, but I will be working to have future production feature a lower DCR if possible.

I'm sure in most cases it will - but you can always make a driver stronger, beefier, sexier I can't quite recall the reason why we scaled back on the full movement of the driver, but I know there was a good reason when I first started discussing this project with Thilo Stompler, head engineer at TC Sounds. Unfortunately he left for China last Friday and won't return for two weeks, so we'll have to wait on an answer

  22. I most definitely am! In fact, I just sent out the first round of emails for coordination on the demo-ring. Should be in your in-box any minute. Preliminary listing slates you for Week 4 of the demo ring, which should coincide roughly between the dates of Oct 7 - 14. Unfortunately, I'm not doing this as a first-come first-served ring, since I want to try to save you all as much money as possible on shipping the driver to the next person in the ring. Come to think of it, if there is anyone in MS, AR, LA, OK, KS, TX, CO, NM, or AZ that is interested in hopping on the demo, drop me a line ASAP for details.
