Out of the loop. Budget system recommendation?
i think this looks like a good deal. ppi p600.2, people really like the 4 channels http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_38336_Precision-Power-PPI-P600.2.html

thinkign of make a big chance in subs
doubt it would be an improvement. you shouldn't be having any issues with your current sub unless the box isn't built probably or your install is bad. they're probably a ton of things you can do to improve your install with what you have now instead of wasting money on more gear. so how about you go over the issues you're having with your current gear and we can make some suggestions

Out of the loop. Budget system recommendation?
I would probably find a Dcon used and pick up a nice 4-500 watt 2 channel, then build a nice ported box to spec.

SKAR amps...whats the story?
watts are watts, its the owner that people have the beef with.

Small in size amp around 300 rms 4 ohm
i wouldnt but good luck

ssa subs
if you have room for the 18 then that sounds great. you won't hear a difference in power between 1400 and 1800. buy whichever is cheaper, or buy used. that part of your budget could be used elsewhere.

I haven't read much about how they analyze the female ear, sounds interesting though. I have read a paper that argued Bull frogs radiate some portion of their call through their tympanic membrane. I think this is the abstract. "Members of the Rana catesbeiana clade display sexually dimorphic eardrums. In this species assemblage the eardrum of males can be 50% larger than in females of the same body size. There has been, however, no apparent functional explanation for this dimorphism. Measurements of the acoustical coupling (transfer function) of internally generated sound to the enlarged eardrum of male bullfrogs (R. catesbeiana) show distinct energy peaks coincident with those observed in the spectral envelopes of the release and mating calls. Moreover, when the tympanic membranes are artificially damped the spectrum of the release call is drastically altered and the total amount of power radiated decreases substantially. These observations point to a previously unsuspected role for the ears in the sound broadcasting process of the bullfrog and possibly other anurans with similarly modified tympanic membranes."

Amusingly the sales person we had in doing the training is going to Puerto Rico on her way home to measure on frogs. Not that application though. They've done that on elephants though, the frogs is a find them in a tree application.Frogs are also interesting since their ear drum is on the outside of the animal. Allows us to measure hearing response without killing them like we have to with other animals. Sort of hard to measure what is happening in the inner ear without access to it... I was also thinking about how to using it to locate the toads as well. We studied Folwer's Toads on the east coast of VA (specifically, Assateague Island and Walops Island right next to NASA). They only called at night in the swamps so finding them is pretty tough. I wonder how it would handle low light situations.

Welcome to the IHoP v.2
I did some undergrad research with toad calls and this has me thinking. So if i have a toad and I wanted to see what body part is responsible for radiating their calls (mating calls) just aim this thing at it. Just thinking out loud a bit. I could see this verifying some observations we made.

Want to recone but dont know which sub I have? (Fi btl/n2/n3?)
other than contacting Fi directly, you could post a bunch of pics. perhaps remove the soft parts and measure the gap (only if you're ready for the recone now).
-
Small in size amp around 300 rms 4 ohm
or 500-600 @ 2ohm. you could probably find a kicker 500.1 for cheap.
-
Small in size amp around 300 rms 4 ohm
do you need 300 x2 @ 4ohm? or just one channel
-
Anyone try the DD-1?
verdict = worthless keep doing things by ear.
-
Fi Q issue
seems something we cant quite diagnose is going on. contacting Fi would be the next step.
-
Fi Q issue
is the final load at the amp the same for both the subs. you're not running the amp at 1 ohm when its not rated to do so, correct?
