this is something that you could do at home, but I seriously DO NOT suggest that you try it. If you've never torn down an engine, you prolly shouldnt be doing this. As you stated earlier, you have no mechanic friends, so there is no one to bail you out or keep a watchful eye. That being said, You could do it yerself, but by the time that you buy the equipment, rent the picker & tools, and widdle away at the project 3 hours a day for 2-4 weeks after school.... You might as well have bought new/used block. Sorry Bubba.
