  1. That is the projector you recommended for SSaudio. Why do you like it compared to the others?

I want to hook up my mac mini, xbox 360, and ps3. What is the difference between an amp and a preamp? If I do get a simple volume only amp, should I buy an equalizer too?

I am looking for a 2 channel amp in the no more than $300 range. I dont know where to turn. I originally was going to get an A/V receiver, but I dont need the video part of the receiver. The back of the TV will do just fine. Better quality anyways, and I don't need the radio. Anyways. I am going to be powering 2 KEF Q's coaxial 15-100 watt speakers at 6 ohms. And are pre-amps basically to be the equalizer? And also. If I get an amp, do I need a pre-amp? And if I need one, where should I start looking?
  4. Thanks Robert. I have been reading about that Dayton 8 design and I think I will try that one as my first DIY project. Also about the crossover I hope it goes well. I think I've spent maybe 5 hours reading about crossovers today. As far as everything goes, I think I have one final question before I start my project. If I have a receiver that gives out 100 watts per channel. And if I have a tweeter thats RMS is 50, and 2 mids that are 60 watts RMS a piece. Is the power handling of the whole speaker 170 RMS? So I add everything together? So if I have 3 drivers 100/3 equals 33 watts a piece?
  5. I understand what you are saying ///M5. I am asking so many questions because I have a passion for audio, and I am willing to do what it takes to learn. This forum is the only thing I got. None of my friends or family are even close to interested in audio in any way. And I refuse to talk to a Best Buy sales person who only wants his commission. I'm only 17, and I work for everything I have. I don't have a lot of money to do a number of trial and errors. I want to build these speakers on a learning process, but I also prefer not to learn over a huge mistake. If there is anything you can do to help me achieve my goal, I will really appreciate it. All I'm asking for is help. I hope what I said makes sense.
  6. Is the official 2 way meaning 2 speakers? 1 tweeter and 1 mid? Or can it also classified as 1 tweeter and 2 mids at the same crossover point
  7. But the tower would be just a look thing. Wouldn't it?
  8. Ok, a 2 way. A tweater and a mid. Should that just be a bookshelf speaker along with a separate subwoofer?
  9. I'de rather do a 4 way. I dunno, with the help of this forum I know I can do it. And this is a 2 channel system. Primarily for music, but also for movies. No I dont have a seperate subwoofer. I want to include the woofer in the general box. Is the type of tweeter that i should be looking at? http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cf...tnumber=272-125 If not, can I be recommended another?
  10. Does the woofer count as a way? Like is 1 tweeter, 1 mid, and the 12" add up to 3? Or is 3 way 2 tweeters, 1 mid, and then the woofer is just separate. The Kenwoods have 2 tweeters, 1 mid, and then a 15". I want to build something similar. But the only problem I am having is what kind of tweeter gets what end of the high spectrum? Or is what I am thinking pure nonsense...
  11. So basically, 3/4 way speakers sound better. But does that mean i buy 2 of the same tweaters with the same everything, then a midrange separated by the crossover?
  12. And what is the difference between cone, dome, horn loaded, and ribbon tweaters? And what makes a tweater professional?
  13. At my house, I have these Kenwood floor standing speakers. It has 3 different looking tweaters, and 12"woofer. Then I look in my KEF rear speakers, and it has 1 speaker which has a tweater in the middle of a little 6" woofer. Obviously, the Kenwoods sound a lot better. BUt I am confused. I want to build my own, but why are there 3 different looking tweaters? I know that the frequencies are seperated by a crossover to the different tweaters, but when I search around for tweaters, I dont see tweaters being seperated by the frequency it plays. Help?

Yea. But with the money I have now I don't want to go all out on nothing. If 800 is a workable budget for 2 speakers, then hey, then those 2 speakers is what I should start with. And I do have 2 bookshelf KEF Q Series speakers so if I really wanted to, I could have surround, and a phantom center.
  15. nice man. i'de be happy too

Ok M5. You convinced me. 2 speakers. And yes I do want to piece it together myself (DIY). But I dont know where to start. Ive seen some QSC 2 channel amps and thought they were nice, but I honestly dont know what to look for. Where should I start? This is for everyone on this forum, everyones advice will be appreciated.
  17. Would lets just say 1000 watts on 2 ohms be the same electrical strain as 1000 watts on 1 ohm?
  18. chad.SQ replied to chad.SQ's topic in Home Audio
Yea that is true M5. Ill be honest, I am not looking for top notch quality. I know that you get what you pay for. I guess for my dorm I wanted to have surround sound. I know that many people just get 2 channel if they are going to be listening to music. But I like the 4 speaker surround sound. And I do expect to watch a few movies. So yea thats my thinking. Is there no way that I can piece together some tweaters and woofers and expect done decent sound from 800 dollars?
  19. chad.SQ replied to chad.SQ's topic in Home Audio
Has anyone ever tried Morel tweaters/woofers?
  20. I didnt know a 13W7 could handle 2000w. I believe thats warranty void lol

I said the subwoofer comes last. I first want to get those speakers going. 800 for speakers isnt enough? How much should I add?
  22. chad.SQ replied to chad.SQ's topic in Home Audio
Ok. Budget. The receiver is going to be 200. And I plan on having 4 speakers. To be honest I dont want to spend more than 800 for those 4 speakers. I dont know if that is a lot or not enough for tweaters and mids, but idk. If i go over the 1000 mark for just the speakers then I give up. I know the subwoofer alone is going to cost 700, but that comes last. Im just focusing on the speakers
  23. chad.SQ replied to chad.SQ's topic in Home Audio
Okay, that makes sense. The JL speakers I was looking at were 4 ohms, when many receivers I have seen are at 8. Then subwoofer wise, I think I understand. Ive read some people being satisfied with a Dayton 1000 watt plate amp, so I went to the Dayton site and there it was, does anyone have a negative towards that amp? And for the receiver, I am lost. I currently have a Sony powering my home system, but I do know that Sony may be a P.O.S. compared to some of the brands this forum may know. I'de like to keep it under 300 if possible. 5.1 too, I dont need 7 speakers... And for the speakers, the only audio that I have any idea about whats good is car audio. Home audio I am LOST. Can anyone direct me to any home audio speakers that they have good luck with? I listen to both alternative and rap.

I have been reading, but still don't understand. Is there a difference between home subwoofers and car subwoofers? Would i have a problem hooking up a Fi Q to a plate amp? And the speakers. Is it not possible to hook up lets say some JL ZR650-CSi speakers to a receiver. Would this not work?
  25. Hz

chad.SQ posted a topic in General Audio
What kind of music hits what hz? I listen to rap and some areas to me are real low. I get confused because I read and people say that rap is all in the 40-50hz range. And then I see that people tune their boxes to maybe 27-29. Is there a program out there that like plays music, then shows you where the hz level is at?
