The SSD's would most likely choke in that enclosure, making them sound like poo. In a better enclosure actually made for the SSD's they would most likely be louder.

53' is minimum for an 18" BTL, if you want louder build a bigger enclosure.

It sounds like your amplifier settings weren't adjusted properly, it could be a number of things though. Judging by what you said about the gain, you didn't set it properly.

Subs up ports forward can yield good results as well.

Actually the boxes on ebay from sonix whatever, are tuned at a decent frequency. I would just be more worried them about having enough port area. 40 Hz. is not a decant frequency for daily.
