  1. I've looked at designs utilizing the Dayton Ref drivers.....but at double the cost, I haven't sold myself on them yet.
  2. Finally got around to getting a receiver. Pioneer VSX-816. It's cheap(er) and does everything I'll need....full preamp outputs and good internal power. Now I need some speakers for HT duty. Been eyeing the Dayton 8. The things that have my interest on them are that the Dayton 8 is supposed to have good midbass and LFE, and sound pretty decent aswell.........and ofcourse the price as it would be around $200 total to build. Likewise, going this route would allow me to use already designed plans and speakers from the same model line for the surround and center channels such as the Dayton budget 2-way or Dayton II for the surround channels and the Dayton III for the center as designed by Speakerbuilder.net This would provide a cost effective means of full surround (should I decide to actually do an entire surround system) aswell as good "voice matching" of all of the speakers given they all utilize the Dayton Classics. My main "problem" is that the D8 is nominal 4ohms and the receiver isn't technically rated down to 4ohms. I've e-mailed Pioneer about this before and their response was something to the effect of "you'll be fine as long as the speakers have a sensitivity over 90db"....with which I'm guessing they are implying that I'll be fine as long as I don't drive the amp overly hard. Anyways.....if you're still reading.....I'm looking for either input on the above and also other suggestions that fit within the same general price range. Good midbass and LFE is a must as I don't know when I'll add a sub. I'm willing to sacrifice a smidge of midrange clarity for the benefit of midbass/LFE as I'm not looking for anything audiophile grade....just want to enhance movie watching a bit and have something decent to listen to tunes on. If I DIY I want plans that are already available...I don't really want to design the thing from scratch (too time consuming). However, if anyone can think of any readily-available pre-built options in the same general price range (used is fine) that would be great aswell as it would save the headache of building the speakers. I was bidding on some JBL HLS series on egay that were pretty local to me (no shipping expense) but some pucker out bid me at literally the last second. I figure the drivers are probably in the same price/performance range and the design couldn't be much worse than a DIY of the same relative expense.....and it would have saved me the time and headache of building them. But....bleh. Holy chit....this sort of turned into a novel

Agreed 100% Raammat is one of the hardest to beat values on the market. Preferred it over Damplifier. My feelings are literally word-for-word identical to yours.
  4. pucking STOKED !!! TOOL is going to be in a neighboring town on June 23rd and I just scored my tickets :slayer: :dancing:
  5. Do you absolutely need a receiver? Could you live without a tuner? Part of your problem is looking at stuff that's sold in Best Buy, you're not going to find deals that way, on BPC (Black Plastic Crap) <-------- But yeah, it does need a tuner. All of my CD's reside in my vehicle...so most of the time when we're listening to music in the house it's the radio. I'm not looking for audiophile quality home audio....just something to breath a little life into movies and better quality audio than what I have now (10yr old Magnavox bookshelf system). Looking at the Pioneer VSX-816. Good internal power @ 100wpc, full preamp outputs should I get a hair up my butt and want to up the ante to external amplificators, has all of the AV I/O that I need and it's under $300 even at retail. Brad I picked up an Elite Thx receiver at a pawnshop for $250. Complete all the way down to Burr Brown DAC and autoswitching on digital in. I wouldn't ever even think of buying new anywhere near that price range. If you don't have $700+ to spend buying used is going to be the only reasonable solution in my book. I don't know how in the hell you guys find these deals in pawnshops. All the pawnshops in my area ever have are cheapass equipment.....NEVER have anything worth even considering purchasing.
  6. I know....not a bloody chance in hell......but it was a nice dream.....
  7. It's like the stars aligned for me :slayer:
  8. Well, my wedding is on 7/7/07 Tool is going to be about 2hrs away in Michigan on 7/5/07 and about 7hrs away on 7/9/07 What do you think my chances are that I could talk them into coming to play at my reception pro bono since they'll be in the relative area ?? It would only be a 4hr detour on their way from MI to Canada.
  9. Wanna sell it

  11. Anybody know where to get HT receivers/etc for on teh cheap other than egay ? So far every site I've found has been asking as much or more for the receiver I am looking at than what I could walk into Best Buy and get it for new w/ warranty. Where are all of the HT whore websites like we have for car audio ?
  12. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Dodge-Charg...ZWDVWQQtcZphoto Wow.
  13. I think .5" might be a little too long though. But seems to be the same general type of screw that I need.
  14. Coustic Design Reference. Stupid thing is about 2 months ago I sold some blown DR's I had....if I was smart I would have pulled the screws from one of those amps before I sold them Also thanks for helping kbkid....let me know what you find.
  15. Well....I handed Fastenal the screw that I need more of and they basically laughed and said "good luck with that"....... The head looks essentially like this; (only it's gloss black) The guy at Fastenal said it's a #4 screw. It's about 1/4" to 5/16" long. It appears to be self-tapping (but not self-drilling/piercing, it's flat on the end) The problem is the threads....it's extremely course. Apparently having this course of thread on such a small screw is pretty "rare". Can't take a good pic....but looking at it from the side it only has 5 "peaks" down it's entire length.
  16. Good call! I work in Kendalltucky so I'll just swing by there on my way in. If that doesn't work I'll try some of the other places you guys have recommended. Thanks !
  17. Their "screw" category doesn't have anything close to what I need.....
  18. Well, if my measurements are correct the threads are 3/16" in diameter with a pitch of .0625"
  19. Well I need to find some screws and I'm not having any luck. They are allen head machine-type screws for the chassis of an amplifier. I've searched high and low locally....from big box stores to mom-&-pop hardware stores to RC Hobby shops. Everything I've found is either too large or doesn't have the right thread pattern. Anybody have an idea of a good store or website to look on to find somewhat obscure screws ?

  21. I'm about half way thru The God Delusion. Been thinking about getting another one of his books when I'm finished.
  22. Sounds like you need to read Stephen Hawkins A Brief History of Time. Has one chapter dedicated to the discussion of time and another dedicated to the discussion of wormholes and time travel.
  23. How funny would it be to be randomly looking at a website and see your wife's scantily clad photo in one of those adult friendfinder ads....
  24. Any amp worth owning will be capable of operating in the range of inaudible distortion.
  25. The formula Neil was talking about; Fc = Re/(2pi*Le) But I agree....tell your friend that he needs better mids if he is planning to rely upon the subwoofer to cover up to 80-100hz.
