Just realized that, I'm about five beers into it, give me a break

    Posted.
  4. I'd rather buy the sub first based on listening preferences, then the amp... But that's just me.
  5. http://www.needledoctor.com They've always been quick ordering cartridges from. They have a decent selection of budget cartridges, but just be careful, you'll probably be spending $50-$100 for a good hi-fi cart. $25 cartridges aren't useful for much other than scratching. Do you have a phono preamp built into whatever amp you're going to be using, or do you need to buy an external one?
  6. "Halfway up" is meaningless. Set your gains with an o'scope to make sure that it's not clipping.
  7. Slightly warm isn't bad, as long as you know exactly how much unclipped power you're sending to them and that isn't a problem for them.
  8. I thought it was...average. Not an amazing driver, not bad either.
  9. If you're melting voice coils, then it's too hot. I've never gotten a dustcap warm...
  10. Like it was said before, mutually exclusive goals.

Depends on the mood I'm in. Hendrix doing "Machine Gun" on Live at the Fillmore is a pretty damn moving piece of work, but it's a lot...rougher than something like "Europa".
  12. Then those people are wrong/aren't listening to properly-installed setups... Pretty much useless for subs, as ideally you'd be crossing over at 60Hz or thereabouts anyway... From who? If anything, for subwoofers I'd say the opposite...but it depends on what kind of linear travel is needed to get the desired output...
  13. Aren't most drives rated to something like 65G's in operation and 350G's when idle?

  15. Brax Not too worried about price, might as well get something with a lifetime warranty
  16. I'd look into mostly used things, but let's face it, 4kW is not really "budget" territory.

I've really liked the Denon cartridges I've used, too...

Decent starter cartridge for that will go from anywhere from $50 to $100... Shure makes one that's under $100 that's pretty highly recommended, I think it's the Mx97e but I can't remember their numbering system.
  19. You're being too generous with equipment 90%+ install...5% equipment, 5% beer, to quote Ramos

#1: SC's schools. #2: Intelligent Design is bullshit, you have your proof.
  21. I think my liver would have recovered by then...
  22. OK, but most of the things that I'd be interested in listening to won't be too impressive in a video. Unless you like seeing tweeters move, I don't know
  23. Through-hole, Mahattan-style, dead bug, SMD...all useful for various things. Although when you're fixing things, having resistors you can actually read color codes off of kicks ass compared to surface mount.
  24. What's fun is getting 4.5" midbasses to play subbass confidently

    What kind?
