Sand is a totally different beast, I wouldn't take a vehicle equipped for mud on sand, or vice versa. Totally different setups.

Not if you fish where I like to...

Some are. My parents had one when I was a kid. Nowadays, I have no idea. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> When I was in early grade school, we had a late '80s 'burb as a school bus...'twas a beast

Bigger trucks are easy to take through traffic. The trick is remembering that you're bigger than they are, far more intimidating, and most likely their vehicle is going to be more expensive to fix.

The attractive thing is that I wouldn't have to give up my preferences for big vehicles...a dual-tank Suburban would be a perfect vehicle to modify for straight veggie oil

I don't really care about either, really...the exhaust could smell like daisies and rainbows for all I care, if it's costing me 80 cents a gallon

When I get a diesel truck I'll tell ya

They wrote a book on the subject - From the Fryer to the Fuel Tank. Tons more info out there on veggie-oil based fuels.

If I knew how to make It I would (I know straight vedtable oil will work if it isnt too cold). Ive probably been close proximity with things a lot more dangerous. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Making it work in unmodded engines involves mixing it with sodium hydroxide and letting it ferment. You get biodiesel with glycerine as a byproduct. Straight veggie oil works, but like you said, you can't start the engine with it. Not to mention that you'll be replacing fuel lines for a little bit...heck of a lot better solvent than regular diesel is.

    Time to make a still

Only problem is I'd need a basement and restaurant hookups to make enough biodiesel to make it cost effective. The stuff's non-toxic, but the process of making it puts you in close proximity with some nasty stuff.

Diesel's the best compromise...at least you're not quite as stuck with one fuel source.

Hell, you could throw a decent electric conversion together for a whole lot less than $7k...I've seen complete retrofit kits for $3k...

If you want a fuel-efficient vehicle, go electric. 'nuff said. Take that $7000, buy a CRX with a good body and dead engine, throw in a battery bank and electric conversion kit, and really laugh at people at the gas pump. I'm seriously thinking about doing that for a commuter/project vehicle...with a diesel truck to trailer it for highway travel.

It's looking like I'm going with this shop I went to today...more expensive, but they're doing a hell of a lot more work and it should look better. Not like I'm paying the difference between the two anyway  And they can do it next week, which is another plus.
