Welcome to the IHoP
All the woofers you mentioned are over $300. The ampilfier power to run them, over $300 The enclosures built for them...depends on the wood. A RTA is much cheaper than a TL <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I have an RTA, Full Spectrum Analyzer, a Bruel & Kjaer mic, and access to a Laser Scanning Vibrometer whenever I want. You don't have to buy a dumb TL or RTA, just come here. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Does your spectrum analyzer cover into RF as well? If so, it'd be worth it to go out there to get some meter time...do my own IMD and 3rd order intercept point measurements and tweak my gear... I can't afford the five-digit price tag that a lot of those things go for

Line arrays in dorms...haha Is the room even big enough for you to get out of the near-near-near-nearield? My concern would be really funky sounding highs, kinda like what I'm getting with the Klipsch's being so close to the HLCDs.

Ouch...for just the medium grade good-on-both-sides cabinet stuff? I guess they expect you to bring lube along with your tape measure when you go... I've heard some people use felt, some don't...I guess you could try it either way and see if it makes a difference.

The plans I have call for 1/2" stock, I think...birch ply would be fine, I could always stain it darker. I'm thinking about a pair of Buschhorns for FE103's in my bedroom...I say a relatively easy build because the only thing you have to watch for are the angles of the horn mouth, it uses a rear-firing angled horn instead of the stepped thing that Fostex does. Also makes it lighter.

Guess I never really heard what Matt's mids could do, it was about a worst-case install. Seemed like they had potential, but they're certainly not tolerant of free air, we'll put it that way

Factory tubes suck. Period. I've got 4 of the 7" ones laying around doin nothing. Would anyone be interested in bookshelves or MTM's constructed set up for ACTIVE *read no crossover*? I'll make some and sell them if someone would like to purchase them. I also have a couple of the Dayton 4.60$ 6ohm tweets sitting around too. I'm just trying to figure out wtf to do with the four drivers. I also kinda need money for a full set of planars for a line array. I've learned that I need to go big or go home on the arrays, and it looks like I'm gonna try to get the funds for the full set of planars. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm going to be talking with you in the near future...seeing about how much shipping would be on some cabinets. Easy build though. And yeah, factory tubes suck, but remember, there was a point in time when Mullards and Telefunkens were considered "stock tubes"... In fact, the guy I bought my new pre from included some Mullard 6DJ8's...or whatever their funky European number is called.

Welcome to the IHoP
Like I've said before, I'm more than willing to do listening tests with stuff people bring over, just need to build some sort of ABX rig for doing it scientifically. Thing is, once you've listened to a couple different tubes, you quickly realize what you like and don't like Hence why I'm not running 300B's...well, that and the $80 a tube pricetag doesn't help either.

I'm surprised XP wil take 128 meg of RAM (assuming you're running XP)...I haven't run less than 512 in a while, think I have a gig in the laptop now...but I've sort of fallen out of the loop when it comes to "DDR" and those acronyms that have come along since I was into building computers. Video cards in particular...that was something that completely exploded in a couple years' time, now people are running more processing power in just that board than whole computers had not too long ago... Hell, the last time I built one, the Pentium MMX was still around and you were doing something if you had RAM with IC's on both sides of the PCB! Oh, opened up the preamp box...and she's a beaut Cosmetically flawless, we'll see if she fires up. But it's going to look purdy in the equipment rack, for sure.

I've got a whole bunch of pictures on here that I don't think I posted yet, of the weekend Tom came up... Think I'll post those along with the preamp shots, as well as some photos of the Field Day site two weeks ago...well, when we weren't staying under tarps from the rain or running away from the big antennas when the lightning came down.
