Back... Deli was closed, but went to an Italian place instead. Damn good sandwiches. Currently installing MS Office. I still have to study for philosophy later tonight...sleep isn't looking like a possibility until tomorrow afternoon

Pretty much all true There are a few really good tubes that don't cost much at all, but the problem is people find them and then they aren't cheap anymore. Tube bandwagons are really common...people have big 300B triode boners, and 211 boners, while tubes like the Svetlana 811 are ignored by "real audiophiles" even though spec-wise they do better than the old 300B. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You lost me at 300B Ive got no idea what is what From what i gather...the amp is only as good as the t00b. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The amp is only as good as the transformers...the tubes are secondary to that. In a big single-ended amp, 80% of the parts cost is invested in the power and output transformers, especially the power - makes sense considering it's always on, through 360deg. of the waveform, continually. If the transformers aren't good enough, bass and treble response sucks. What tube you use determines the operating characteristics like plate voltage and current, and ultimately final power output, but a good tube with a bad transformer will sound like ass.

lol, I've never seen those on tubes before. Yay for excess plastic use...

Can't download it until I go back to B'burg tonight... No way I'm waiting on a 266MB download on a dial up connection.

I'm hesistant to install Service Pack 2 on it...although since I'm installing everything from scratch anyway I guess it doesn't matter.

The other versions of 12AX7's that Sovtek makes are basically crap.
-
Welcome to the IHoP
Black plastic thing? I assume that's some sort of tube damper or something...but you're right. Just pull it firmly out, not too difficult. Sovtek 12AX7LPS's are probably the best new production version out there, unless you go new old stock (which get expensive quick).

What's more annoying then installing XP is reinstalling all the other programs and little chit, like Photoshop, Itunes, Winamp, FF, AIM, and the like...

Welcome to the IHoP
When I was unpacking chit that I brought back from winter break, I had a pair of 6CG7 preamp tubes...one got crushed and the little tip was broken off. I cried a little... Inside.

Welcome to the IHoP
First time I've had to do it on the XPS in the two years I've had it...so I consider myself lucky. Thinking about running a version of Linux, with OpenOffice, just for times like two weeks ago when the OS goes kaput and I can't make it home to reinstall everything.

If it's a receiver, I'd pass. If it's a tuner, depends on what kind...problem with old tubed radios are that they might need an alignment, early FM stereo receivers that are tubed may have horrible MPX decoding for the stereo signal. Just isn't stable enough usually.

Welcome to the IHoP
This would be so much easier if I had a 20GB Ipod or so...instead of a 2gig memory stick...
