Too many variables here...did you actually meter the SPL or just heard it and it "sounded" the same? Did you have the amplifiers set with a clamp meter to verify actual output?

If it were me, I'd put $100 or so into finding a vintage amp on Ebay (PG M series comes to mind, or maybe an older USAmps), and the rest into speakers.
