I look at it this way. Think of it as a garbage can, when you crawl inside and push on it, you get an eliptical effect on the can. but thats only 2 poimts of pressure. well a subwoofer has infinite amounts of pressure points (pushes evenly on all sides), so when a sub hits you get a equal pressurization along all points. If I put a circle brace in the center with steel rods in the form of a triangle atound the inside dia., I feel that a .5 inch wall thickness will be sufficient.

Using a volume calculator, it comes to 24" x 24" if the tube is 1/2" thick. I will be making a floor in the back. So there should be enough room. Oh by the way, I thought about making it dual round ports on the side so it looks like a ROCKET! That may very well be true! "chuckle"

Hi ladiess and gents, I have been thinking about my next subwoofer enclosure. To be a little different and it sounds to be a fun project, I wanna try and build a sonotube enclosure. Has anyone here had any experiance with them, good or bad? I also scoured the web and I can't seem to find prices or anywhere that sells sonotubes by the foot. Are there other names they go by? I am getting an 18 nightshade so there will be bracing and all that stuff. I'm looking to get a 24 inch dia. tube to keep the length down. Thanks.

Hey crash, In my experience, I have used Pioneer, Sony, Kenwood and JVC and Alpine. To date I have a Pioneer that has all the sound options I could want. I think a good starting place for you would be to go to crutchfield.com where you can imput your car and they will recommend you a player and if it fits in your ride. you can also select from various brands to get exactly what your looking for. Hope this helps a little.

Thanks man, I haven't personally heard either of those in person. I think a few people use them in the metro which is a couple hours from me. (I live in the boonies). I don't think I'll need another one as I am not gonna be competeing for spl and I don't think 2 will fit without a wall. I'll have to shop around for the BTL. Anyone else have ideas or comments?

Hi folks, after a long f'd up process trying to figure out what was wrong with my tarantula amp. I decided to trade a dude for his autotek mean machine 3000.1 (before maxxonics bought them). Anyhow, that amp is only 2 ohm stable bridged. Therefore, I can only run 1 of my Ti Elite 12's (dual 4ohm). It simply is not enough output. So I thought about it and decided that The happiest I was, was when I had an 18 Cerwin Vega circa 1998. After selling my last Elite, I will have roughly $400 for an 18. I decided to make my car a 2 door and take the rear seats out and put the box back there. I don't want to wall it off.....yet. So I should have plenty of room for whatever Driver I choose. I have it narrowed down between a Fi BL or a SSA Xcon. would it be better to get a dual 1ohm and run the full 3000 watts (rms) or get a dual 2ohm and run 1500 watts to either driver? I play alot of different kinds of music from metal/rap/instramental/bass. I looked at the box desig for the xcon. what would be the best recommended box size? To sum up? Budget $400 1: better driver for my needs 2: what ohm configuration 3: optimal box design for my music type Thanks for the input!

No offense taken! Any and all comments/info welcome. I am not going to compete so I don't need/want a peaky box. Right now I have a sealed to spec. box. I like the way it sounds but I want a little more output. Going with the 28hz recommendation from the factory has a steep drop off at 34hz and a 7db attenuation at 20z. If I tune my box to 20hz, I get flat till 40 hz and a 3db drop at 20 hz. Wouldn't that be better for reproducing music accurately?

I did a little research on my own and dloaded winISD. They didn't list my sub so I put all the numbers I had (from the paper above) into the calculator. From what I understand the EBP number is the number to tell you if the sub will "like" a certain enclosure. My sub was 40.9 but I'm not sure what that meant. Also plotting the spl graph It looks like tuning to 20hz will get a real nice smooth response. According to the vent tab for 2 slot ports 12"Hx4W" and 240"L. Does this sound right? There is a vent mach. of .01 but i don't know what that means either. I have never built a ported box before so I am in the dark

That'd be cool Nem. I found the video and the dudes name is Kocheric. He listed the box as E&J Audio, but I couldn't find the company on the old internets. In the description it is 5 cubes at 35hz. As above I wanted 2.5 cubes and 28hz.

I saw this on a video and I want to know if its possible for me. Here is some info: I want to go with the musical ported measurements. 2.5^ft., 4" Vd, 13.5" Vl, tuned to 28htz I want the outside length to be 31" (including ports) max, I want it 14" high. What I don't know is the depth. I have a 3000 watt amp and listen to various kinds of music. If someone can help me on the dimensions and maybe even a plot of the spl curve, it would be greatly appreciated and I can get to building. Thank You. Hi Jon, It is now 2011 and I am curious to hear how you are doing! It sounds great that you need to make holes in your belt. I just wanted to comment about support from family and friends that don't understand us big guys can't have resses pieces, cake, pie, ect. In my house its just my father and I. He shows his love for me by buying sweets cuz he knows thats what I love (even though its killing me). Well I met with 98GMC today (very nice guy) and we bumped the system hard for just about 2 hours and the amp played just fine. I guess I'm just gonna wait till something blows and then look into something different. Thanks again for everyuones effort!

Ok, took some time today to take some readings. Heres what I got This one is from the manual on how to hook them up All the tinsel leads had no signs of breakage I wanna say thanks alot for all the help given so far. I'll get my camera back tonight so I can take pics of the insides of the amp. ( 98GMC Hows tomorrow looking for a visit)
