Well... just ripped into the Brutus, and holy chitty solder joints. No burnt smell or anything burnt looking. All diodes test out ok. I think it is just a bad joint.

fudge, my Brutus stopped working this morning, turned on the car and nothing, turns on, no output, but when it does turn on, the sub thumps. Looks like I'll be ripping it apart tomorrow.

0.88 ft^3 is a good size for a Type R 10". If you want a little more room under the strut bar, you can always do a slanted back or front. Give you more room, and you could have the box installed snug to the rear seat. I am assuming that width is for each sub? Two chambers?
